Elect Anthony Niedwiecki to Oakland Park City Commission - Seat #4
www.Anthony09.com
-At last Wednesday's Oakland Park's commission meeting, I became aware of anissue that affects so many families in our city. During a discussion aboutpossibly limiting short term rentals, I discovered that single family homeswere limited to no more than three unrelated people living together.
Specifically, the city's code says that single family homes cannot include"more than three (3) individuals unrelated by blood, marriage, or adoption."
I have been with my partner, Waymon Hudson, for six years. We received acivil union in Vermont almost five years ago and are registered domesticpartners here in Broward County. We also recently had a foster son livewith us, who is a part of our family that still comes home to visit usregularly from college. Yet, if we had two foster children in our home atthe same time, we would have been violating the law! That is wrong. I amafraid that there are so many other unmarried couples (both straight andgay) with children who are violating Oakland Park's law. There also areother families that are not related by blood or marriage that violate thisordinance, including seniors who live with and support each other. In fact, under this law the Golden Girls would be prevented from living in a singlefamily home in Oakland Park! This law is outdated and needs to be changed.
A few cities across the country have already changed their laws, and OaklandPark could be a leader here in South Florida. This is an issue all citiesneed to look closely at and change. We should be strengthening ourfamilies, not creating more legal hurdles for them. The reality is that ourfamilies and households come in every shape and size, and they all need tobe respected and protected. Last week I asked the city to modernize thisordinance to reflect the wonderfully diverse nature of our city. I am verypleased that Commissioner Boisvenue had the issue placed on the May 21, 2008city commission agenda. Please help me in changing this ordinance bysending an email to the commissioners or making a statement at the May 21stmeeting. Anybody may speak for up to four minutes during the publiccomments portion of the meeting. I know we all appreciate when the citytakes actions that make our community more inclusive and welcoming, andchanging this ordinance is another step in that direction.

-California: "I think there is a good chance we are about to face whatcould well be the single most important battle we have ever seen in the LGBTrights movement." That's how Matt Coles, Director of the ACLU LGBT Projectdescribes the epic battle we will face should the California Supreme Courtdecide in our favor on the same sex marriage case later this month. Thismajor conflict will result from the confluence of two events:
The California Supreme Court strikes down state law limiting marriage toopposite-sex couples. Almost simultaneously, voters will weigh in on aballot initiative sponsored by VoteYesMarriage.com to amend the state'sconstitution to outlaw same sex marriage -- undoing the Supreme Courtdecision.
-New York: For many Democratic members of the Assembly, last year's passageof a bill to legalize same-sex marriage was the culmination of years ofbattle and persuasion within their party's ranks, and most of themeventually supported the legislation. For the few Assembly Republicans whoultimately supported the bill, the vote was potentially far more risky: apublic break with their own party on an issue that at the time was stillconsidered in some quarters to be radioactive, potentially evencareer-killing. But the experience of Assemblywoman Teresa R. Saywardsuggests that those fears may be unwarranted. Ms. Sayward, left, athree-term Republican from the North Country, an observant Roman Catholic ina heavily Catholic district, surprised many of her colleagues last year whenshe rose to speak in support of the bill, reflecting on her own experiencescoming to terms with the fact that her son, Glenn, was gay.

-Hit TV drama features gay soldiers in 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' tragedy
"You keep your personal life separate from your work life. I just neverthought I'd meet my personal life at work." The storyline of last night's"Grey's Anatomy" brought light to a possible scenario that faces thousandsof partnered gay and lesbian militaryservicemembers under the veil of secrecy required to live under "Don't Ask,Don't Tell":
A terminal illness.
10 USC 654, enacted in 1993, requires a gay member of the military to remaincloseted in order to serve. The law calls for discharge if a servicemembercomes out, or is outed; discovery of a relationship with a person of thesame sex is one example. On a daily basis, the Pentagon fires an estimatedtwo people, joining the ranks of over 12,000 whose careers have been endedunder "Don't Ask."

Sometimes, I hate being right. It wasn't a stretch of the imagination

Already we can predict how the ALA next year will complain about anyobjection to a book called "Uncle Bobby's Wedding," the story of a youngguinea pig who worries that her Uncle Bobby won't play with her anymoreafter he "marries" his boyfriend Jamie. The book ends at the "wedding," withChloe as the enthusiastic flower girl.

-Polygamy versus polyamory
With some of the commentary on this list about the YFZ ranch incident, Ithought I would comment about the distinctions between polygamy (esp aspracticed by this sect) and the modern theory and practice of polyamory.
Before doing that, let me say that I share with others the concerns aboutexcessive government and police action in this case. While I'm nosympathizer of the Fundamentalist LDS church and its patriarchs, theevidence I've looked at shows that Texas law enforcement authorities, thecourts and social services extended their reach in its wholesale seizure ofchildren and their mothers from the YFZ compound, as well as rushing theirinvestigation (witness the revelation after the fact that the telephonecalls which started this mess turned out to be fraudulent). We cannotdefend individual rights by engaging in collective prosecution.
That being said, we also need to be careful in comparing the FLDS practiceof polygamy (or "plural marriage"), and the theology/ideology behind it,with the theory and practice of polyamory. One thing to remember is thatFLDS plural marriage is sustained in an isolated theocratic autocracy, whilepolyandry emerged and embraces the values of pluralism and democracy.

-Arizona: A proposed amendment that would prevent same-sex couples in
Arizona from marrying received final approval in the House on Monday and ifapproved in the state Senate will appear on the ballot in November. Theproposed amendment defines marriage as a union between one man and onewoman.

-Chicago, NY, SF: May 16-17 Actions for Gay Russians
Gay activists in three U.S. cities will mobilize for vigils on May 16 and 17for IDAHO, International Day Against Homophobia, and the focus will be toapply pressure on the Russian government to grant all necessary permits tothe organizers of Moscow's third gay pride parade, scheduled for late May.
Last year, despite the mayor of Moscow refusing to grant permits to parade, gay marchers from around the world attempted to peaceably take to thestreets for equality and tolerance, and were violently assaulted byultra-nationalist thugs, sending some of the gays, covered in blood, to thehospital. Russian police stood by and did nothing to stop the attacks. Thisyear, before gay Russians again try to exercise their human rightsprotections, activists outside the country will send a message to theKremlin, through vigils at consulates and at gay venues: We are watching howyou treat your gay citizens.

It wasn't a stretch of the imagination
to foresee that the new storybook Uncle Bobby's Wedding, by Sarah Brannen, would be a target for the right. I didn't imagine they'd quote me whiledoing so, however. The conservative publication Town Hall just published thearticle "Librarians Against Censorship," by Brent Bozell III. Bozell says:

-Letter: ANTHONY VERDUGO, founder and executive director, Christian FamilyCoalition, Miami
The May 7 letter Fighting gay rights asks what I would respond if mychildren asked what I did with my life. My children have asked me thisquestion, and I've answered that I lovingly work hard to protect and defendbasic human rights, social justice, human dignity and equality for allmembers of our community. What our opponents know all too well but refuse toacknowledge is that their domestic-partner proposal shamelesslydiscriminates against legitimate family members, both blood and legalrelatives, by banning them from health-insurance coverage. So who is denyinghealth insurance to whom? Isn't it ironic that our opponents cloakthemselves in the rhetoric of compassion, while their domestic-partnerordinance hatefully kicks legitimate family members to the curb? As for thephony hospital-visitation argument, it is deceitful of our opponents to saythe domestic-partner ordinance is needed so that people can visit a lovedone in the hospital, when they know the law allows us to designate anyone wechose to make medical decisions and visit us in the hospital if we areincapacitated? Unlike our opponents, I take to heart and teach my children the wise words of Dr. Martin Luther King: ''Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.'' That's why I've devoted my life as a labor of love to ourcommunity's children, poor and elderly and working families.

Marriage Equality News

Go to this link for the following articles:
-Wednesday's ruling from the Michigan Supreme Court striking down benefitsfor domestic partners at public institutions verifies a fairly obvious,straight-forward reading of the state constitution. The ruling exposes, too,the obvious deceit of some who sold the 2004 marriage amendment to thepublic as merely an attempt to ban gay marriage in Michigan. In fact, it didmuch more. The result is detrimental to the reputation of a state thatshould be open and inclusive of all, including gay and lesbian people. Thedecision certainly hurts those who will lose their health care, or be unableto obtain any, because of it. Too, it hamstrings universities and otherpublic employers in recruiting world-class thinkers and researchers. Theunfortunate truth is that a majority on the court, and probably the state, don't seem to care. [...] The marriage amendment, enacted by a solid votermajority, reads: "To secure and preserve the benefits of marriage for oursociety and for future generations of children, the union of one man and onewoman in marriage shall be the only agreement recognized as a marriage orsimilar union for any purpose."
-When Tracey Arledge worked for the University of Michigan, she had thechance to sign up her lesbian partner and their three children for healthbenefits through her employer. Now, she said, a new high court ruling thatderailed the practice could mean an unintended hit to the pocketbook fortaxpayers if same-sex couples are forced off employer-based health plans andinto state-supported coverage.
-On Sunday night's season finale of the ABC show, "Brothers and Sisters,"the characters "Kevin" and "Scotty" got married -- in what was billed as thefirst gay marriage on a network television drama. In Maryland, a push tolegalize gay marriage has stalled in Annapolis -- and in Marylandcourtrooms. Right now, no form of same-sex marriage is recognized by statelaw. Some people want to overturn the law; others want to make it evenstronger by placing into the state's constitution. State Delegate Don DwyerJr. has no doubt what the producers of "Brothers and Sisters" were trying todo with the marriage of "Kevin and Scotty." "It's clearly to normalize andbuild social acceptance for the issue on a national basis," Del. Dwyer said.
-Get out. Organize. Care.
Strengthened by controversy over a proposition that could glue a gaymarriage ban into the Florida constitution, community activists put on aworkshop Sunday about the importance of getting involved.
The weekend's two-day training session, which attracted dozens of people tothe Courtyard by Marriott on Cypress Creek Road, was run by the Human RightsCampaign, the nation's largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civilrights organization. The program was part of a national event to helpencourage volunteers to elect candidates the organization considers to befair-minded, and defeat discriminatory ballot measures.
-When Michigan voters headed to the polls in 2004 to decide the fate of aproposed amendment to the state Constitution, they were told the followingby its lead proponent: "(This) has nothing to do with taking benefits away.
This is about marriage between a man and a woman," said Marlene Elwell, campaign director of Citizens for the Protection of Marriage. Citizens forthe Protection of Marriage's Web site declared the group's purpose was "fordefining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Period." And itsbrochure told voters: "This is not about rights or benefits or how peoplechoose to live their life."
-When Phil Miatkowski created an online group to support civil unionlegislation in Illinois, it was meant to be just an easy way to keep friendsinformed. A year later, the group on the social networking site Facebookhas swelled to nearly 9,000 members. The legislation's sponsor sought theirhelp to lobby for the measure which would be the first of its kind in thestate. And they've generated thousands of faxes and e-mails to statelawmakers, organized rallies and circulated petitions. "Every time I logon, it's getting larger, so it's exciting to see," said Miatkowski, a LakeForest College sophomore.

From Waymon Hudson
President of Fight OUT Loud

-Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message, but better toomany than your missing this important announcement. If you have not alreadyheard, a dangerous thing happened this week that poses a very serious threatto the transgender and allied community, and could potentially impactlesbian, gay, bisexual, and allied people as well. The AmericanPsychological Association (APA) recently appointed Dr. Kenneth Zucker tochair the task force responsible for updating of mental health language andtreatment of diagnoses such as Gender Identity Disorder (GID) for theupcoming DSM-V (Diagnostics and Statistics Manual, Fifth Edition).
Don't let his recent appearance on NPR sounding like a nice guy fool you. Ata time when the American Medical Association (AMA) is supporting stoppingdiscriminating against and stigmatizing transgender people, Dr. Zucker is awidely recognized proponent of reparation ("ex-gay") and aversion therapyfor children and youth. These techniques have been proven to be ineffectiveat best and--more often--severely damaging to the mental health of peoplewho are LGB or T.
Dr. Zucker holds the fate of our young people in his hands. WE MUST ALL TAKEACTION to remove Dr. Zucker as well as his cronies from this all-importantAPA working group, based upon his approach to clinical treatment oftransgender and gender non-conforming identity in children & youth. Pleasesign this petition to remove the most outrageous members from the DSM-V GIDcommittee, and then the link on to everyone you know:

-Cuba will mark world day against homophobia
Havana, May 5th. Next Saturday the 17th, Cuba will mark, world day ofstruggle against homophobia for the second time. This is no longer asmall gathering of interested people, like last year, but a broadpublic program, the National Center for Sexual Education (Cenesex)reported.
It could be called a public "coming out of the closet" celebration.
On Monday, Cenesex put on its website ( www.cenesex.sld.cu ) a callfor activities "aimed at displaying and combating all kinds ofdiscrimination, based on sexual orientation and gender identity. "
A year ago, Cenesex recalled the date with a movie-discussionsession, with the showing of the film Boys Don't Cry (KimberlyPierce, 1999), based on the true story of a transsexual girl. But theturnout at the downtown cinema 23 y 12 was small, less than a hundredpeople, mostly participants in some of CENESEX sexual diversityprograms.

-Today participants in the 7th Moldovan Pride were precluded from marching peacefully in support of anti-discrimination legislation and tolerance in the centre of Chisinau. Police did not guarantee the right to freedom of assembly. Large aggressive coordinated groups, including extremist religious groups, members of the neo-fascist movement "New Right", and legionnaires blocked the bus with participants, forced the door, violently hit the windows, and attempted to remove the engine, while shouting "lets get them out and beat them up". The police distanced itself from the events by taking the role of passive observers. GenderDoc-M has informed local authorities and the ministry of internal affairs as early as 21st of April about the route of the march, and asked for protection. The law on freedom of assembly of Moldova guarantees peaceful assembly to everyone, and puts an obligation on the police to guarantee the exercise of the right and the safety of participants. The police did not facilitate the exit of pride participants from the bus into the street, did not side out the rival aggressive groups from intervention, and through their passivity encouraged escalation of violence and the built up of the all-permissive hostile atmosphere.
Independent human rights observers witnessed hatred shouts, such as "Beat them to death", "Don't let them escape". No medical emergency was foreseen.

-Gay Blood Ban Protests: England, N. Ireland, USA
University of Bradford students have converged on the city's blood donorcentre to call for donation not discrimination'.
The students, members of the University's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and TransSociety, say the current National Blood Service policy, which bans gay andbisexual men from giving blood for life, is archaic and should be reviewed.
Yesterday's protest was part of a campaign by the National Union of Students(NUS), which believes the policy of asking men if they have ever hadunprotected sex with another man is homophobic.
The campaign, outside the blood donor centre in Rawson Road, saw studentsencouraging friends, fellow students and passers-by to donate blood in placeof the district's gay and bisexual men.
Student Josh Bradley, 19, was one of those protesting. He said: "We had areally successful day and handed out about 150 leaflets.
"We got eight people to give blood for us, seven of whom were first timedonors. We have also managed to collect 72 signatures on our petitioncampaigning for an end to the ban."
Josh said the policy was homophobic because it did not take into accountwhether sex was protected or how long ago sexual activity took place.

From Florida Red and Blue - SayNo2
Whether you're closely following the debate over Amendment 2 or not, spending two minutes reading this column from Friday's Detroit Free Press isa good idea. In fact, if you care about the issue at all, it's a must read.
Bottom line: the supporters of the "marriage protection" amendment inMichigan lied. Back in 2004, they sold their amendment to Michigan voters bysaying it wouldn't impact benefits at all. The sponsoring organization inMichigan - Citizens for the Protection of Marriage (CFPM) - was clear thatbenefits could not be altered in any way. "This has nothing to do withtaking benefits away. This is about marriage between a man and a woman,"the Director of the CFPM told USA Today on October 15, 2004. Not to beoutdone, the CFPM Communications Director told the Holland (MI) Sentinel,October 30, 2004, that, "This amendment has nothing to do with benefits...It's just a diversion from the real issue." And Gary Glenn, President ofAmerican Family Association and a strong proponent of the Michigan amendmentwas quoted in the October 24, 2004 Ann Arbor News as saying that talk thatbenefits would be affected by the ballot initiative was "a scare tactic."
And too bad for Michigan voters who believed what the Amendment sponsorssaid about their own amendment. They should have known better because, according to the Michigan Supreme Court, supporters of amendments ".oftentend to downplay the effect of such initiatives." [...] Like the Michiganamendment, the real impact of Amendment 2 will be decided in court whenjudges try to untangle what "substantial equivalent" of marriage is. Or whatconstitutes a relationship that is "treated as marriage." And just like inMichigan, we know Amendment 2 can actually take away existing rights andbenefits from our neighbors - leaving senior citizens without the ability tovisit loved ones in a hospital or denying young couples the ability to sharehealth care benefits. And just like in Michigan, the supporters of Amendment2 insist that their amendment won't do any of those things. In fact, theyuse some of the exact same language. But unlike Michigan, we now knowbetter. We've seen this story too many times already to be fooled by it.
It's happened in Michigan and Kentucky and Ohio - a "marriage protection"
amendment being sold as one thing and delivering something else. There's noexcuse for us not to end this right now. We only need 40% of the vote tokeep this bill of goods out of our Constitution and out of our courts. Wecan SayNo2 the bait and switch. We can do it.
But we can't do it without you. Please forward this email or a link to ourwebsite (www.SayNo2.com) to your friends. Ask them to sign the SayNo2pledge. Check for events in your area or make a contribution to help us keepspreading the message - SayNo2. We can't let Floridians reward dishonesty.
