-God Enjoyed Inauguration Rhetoric
I thought God - the real God, the One Who cares passionately about justice, peace, and diversity - came out rather well in the Inaugural ceremonies. God's official spokespersons did better than I had expected. Rev. Rick Warren - whose choice I had strongly criticized because of his views about gay and lesbian sexuality - did much better than I had feared. I was especially moved by his speaking, in English, the Jewish "Sh'ma" about God's Unity and the Muslim "Bismillah Er Rachman Er Rahim" -- "In the name of God Who is Compassionate and Merciful." I doubt that most Christians knew what he was doing in either case, but Jews and Muslims did.

-Early this year, the Swedish government set a dangerous precedent in settling an important asylum case involving a gay man from Iran. Now that precedent may be used to expel a number of gay Iranians from Sweden, to face imprisonment or death at home. Swedish asylum policy is governed by the Aliens Act of 1989. An amendment which came into effect in 1997 (Chapter 3, paragraph 3.3) explicitly includes gays and lesbians as a protected category, offering asylum to any person "who due to her/his sex or homosexuality experiences a well-founded fear of persecution."

The UK gay humanist charity the Pink Triangle Trust has welcomed the humanistic agenda announced in the new American President's inauguration speech in which he called for a more inclusive and progressive America. Making a commitment to "restore science to its rightful place", Barack Obama said: "We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus and non-believers", and spoke of "our common humanity." George Broadhead, the PTT's secretary, said: "This humanistic agenda which acknowledges non-believers in the American population, and by implication their status on a par with religionists, is very encouraging for humanists worldwide. It is especially encouraging after the heavily pro-religious agenda espoused by former presidents, notably George W Bush.

-Would It Kill You To Look Like A Man?
Transgender Employees in Indiana
Judge Robert L. Miller, a Reagan appointee who sits on the federal district court for the Northern District of Indiana, has recently issued yet another curious decision in the case of Creed v. Family Express Corp. Amber Creed was fired from her job in 2005 because she is transgender. [...] There is a considerable amount of debate as to whether, in protecting "gender identity" - one's self-identification as male or female - the law should also protect "gender expression" - one's expression of gender through clothing, styling and other behavioral and social characteristics. Judge Miller's decision in Creed I turned this debate on its head. He decreed that the federal sex discrimination protection extends to discrimination based on gender expression, but that discrimination based on gender identity is not. Under Judge Miller's rule, a crossdresser who makes no claims about sex would be covered, but a transsexual who claims to change their sex would not. In other words, sex discrimination covers a person whose sex is not implicated, but doesn't cover a person whose sex is implicated. Sheesh.

-Op-Ed Columnist: Bad Faith Economics
By PAUL KRUGMAN
As the debate over President Obama's economic stimulus plan gets under way, one thing is certain: many of the plan's opponents aren't arguing in good faith. Conservatives really, really don't want to see a second New Deal, and they certainly don't want to see government activism vindicated. Organizations United Together, Inc. (OUT) - Florida
http://www.gayagenda.com/2009/01/organizations-united-together-inc-out-florida/
-An unprecedented number of leaders of local LGBT and allied organizations met in Orlando, Florida Saturday from every corner of the state in an all day session. The meeting was convened by a statewide federation of local organizations created last month: Organizations United Together ("OUT"). "OUT's first meeting was an unqualified success," declared OUT spokesperson Karen Doering. "The energy, enthusiasm, and excitement about the possibilities of what we can achieve together was inspiring." The morning portion of the meeting included a networking session where each region of the state networked with other groups from their own region and discussed their local priorities. In the afternoon, participants broke up by interest area, so that political, educational and community-focused groups could network with similar groups and work together to explore how OUT can best assist them in enhancing communication, sharing resources and developing coordinated strategies for the future. Several statewide projects emerged as priorities from the daylong strategy sessions. [...] Organizations United Together, Inc. (OUT) is a federation of local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied organizations dedicated to achieving equality and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Floridians. By connecting and empowering local organizations throughout the state to share resources, skills and knowledge, OUT aims to forge our statewide strength to achieve common goals.

-'Global Gag Rule' Lifted
By Barbara Crossette
On Friday evening, a time favored by officials trying to avoid attention, President Barack Obama issued a statement reversing one of the most damaging policies ever visited on developing nations by Republican administrations. This was the "global gag rule," which forbade US government support for any organization that in any way fostered, provided or even advised women about abortion. It was a policy foisted on an unsuspecting world by the Reagan administration at, of all events, a United Nations conference on women and development held in Mexico City in 1984.

THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
If you believe in the necessity of a Palestinian state or you love Israel, you'd better start paying attention. We're getting perilously close to closing the window on a two-state solution, because the two chief window-closers - Hamas in Gaza and the fanatical Jewish settlers in the West Bank - have been in the driver's seats. Hamas is busy making a two-state solution inconceivable, while the settlers have steadily worked to make it impossible. [...] So, just to recap: It's five to midnight and before the clock strikes 12 all we need to do is rebuild Fatah, merge it with Hamas, elect an Israeli government that can freeze settlements, court Syria and engage Iran - while preventing it from going nuclear - just so we can get the parties to start talking. Whoever lines up all the pieces of this diplomatic Rubik's Cube deserves two Nobel Prizes.

-Even Ordinary Iranians Took Up This Banner
By Azadeh Moaveni
During a recent trip to Tehran, I noticed that the Benetton shop in my old neighborhood of Darrous was closed, its windows papered over. In the past, fundamentalists offended by the shop's immodest displays had decried its immorality and spread rumors of "Zionist ownership." This time, however, they set the place on fire -- not to protest the mannequins, dressed in the latest fashions, sans veils, but rather to protest the carnage in the Gaza Strip. Though my visit happened to coincide with the Israeli offensive that killed an estimated 1,300 Palestinians over three weeks, I hadn't expected the conflict to reverberate in my old neighborhood. If anything, I've always found that my former neighbors -- many deeply pious, but not known for any special antipathy toward Israel -- are, like the majority of Iranians, resentful of Iran's support for militant groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

-Energy Costs Generating Light-Bulb Solutions
By Lisa Rein
They don't have the sex appeal of windmills or the cool factor of solar panels but cost a fraction of the price. In fact, their methods can be as low-tech as plugging a leaky air duct. Governments and utility companies across the Washington region are starting to roll out new "energy-efficiency" campaigns with the potential to lower bills, carbon emissions and the area's dependence on foreign oil without building a single coal or nuclear plant. Energy experts say that they can reap large benefits by encouraging people to retrofit homes with changes as simple as new shower heads, light bulbs and refrigerators.

'Libs,' 'pinkos' and 'right-thinking Americans' in the Bush Justice Department
BEFORE THE BUSH era passes too far into history, take a moment to peruse yet another devastating report about politics run amok at the Bush Justice Department. The subject is personnel decisions in the department's Civil Rights Division. The report, which was released publicly on Jan. 13, was prepared by the Office of Inspector General and the Office of Professional Responsibility. The findings are, in a word, disgusting. Supervisors in the division routinely weighed political affiliation or ideology in hiring for career positions, which is a violation of federal civil service laws. Managers referred to some employees hired during Democratic administrations as "libs" or "pinkos." When making hiring decisions, one supervisor, Bradley Schlozman, in conversations and e-mails, stated a preference for hiring conservatives -- or, in his parlance, "right-thinking Americans" (whom he also referred to as "RTAs"). According to the report, roughly 64 percent of those Mr. Schlozman hired were considered Republican or conservative; 2 percent had more liberal or Democratic credentials, and the political views of 34 percent were unknown.

COME TO THE RALLY IN TALLAHASSEE
JOIN A LOCAL LOBBY TEAM IN YOUR COMMUNITY
With the 2009 Legislative Session fast approaching, all bills that will be filed this year have been submitted. Our agenda is set and the work ahead is clear. This email outlines our goals and strategies in 2009 and we are excited to share them with you. Last year was a breakthrough year in Tallahassee. We passed the Florida Safe Schools law and as a result students across Florida are protected right now by anti-bullying polices that specifically include LGBT students. We also worked with our local partners in 2008 to win protections at the city and county level. Together we passed 19 NEW Safe Schools, Domestic Partnership, and anti-discrimination policies in Florida last year alone. Now, we turn to 2009, a year of enormous possibility as we work to secure equality for LGBT Floridians and our families. Rally In Tally - March 16th, 2009 - Sign Up for the Rally in Tally

-Only Qualified to Be President?
By J.T. Young
Is Jeb Bush now only qualified to be president? Sadly, his recent refusal to seek Florida's open Senate seat race in 2010 indicates, the answer is "yes." Jeb's decision not to run is beyond disappointing to national and Senate Republicans in dire need of reinforcement. It is also an example of "president-itis," which afflicts prominent Republicans from time to time. Despite advantages to themselves and their party, too often Republicans who see themselves as "presidential" can not see themselves in any other light.

Before President Obama can do, he must undo. Repairing the damage that George W. Bush did to the nation's values, honor and pride will be complicated and, at times, politically inconvenient. But nothing is more urgent, and nothing will ultimately reap more benefits at home and abroad.
