Shops we do have, but they are preponderantly corporate-owned: Design Within Reach, Joseph A. Bank, North Face, Athletica, LA Fitness. Lacking are the odd shops, the curiosity shops (to use the Charles Dickens' title), whose character and contents might pleasantly surprise a passing pedestrian.

Lawmakers Raise Concerns About Locker Rooms at Trans Rights Hearing

During a Judiciary Committee hearing on the transgender rights bill July 14 some members of the committee indicated that they had concerns about the bill, particularly about its impact on bathroom and locker room facilities. In the weeks leading up to the hearing opponents of the bill, led by the conservative Christian advocacy group Massachusetts Family Institute (MFI), had waged a media and lobbying campaign to brand the legislation, House Bill 1728, as “the bathroom bill,” claiming that it would enable sexual predators to dress as women and enter women’s bathroom and locker room facilities. Only one committee member, Rep. Colleen Garry (D-Dracut), raised that scenario as a serious concern during the hearing, but other committee members, including House committee chair Rep. Eugene O’Flaherty (D-Chelsea), said they believed the bill might threaten the rights to privacy and modesty of non-transgender people using locker room and bathroom facilities. H.B. 1728 would amend the state’s non-discrimination and hate crimes laws to make them transgender-inclusive. Read more

A year ago, theare were no lawsuits in federal court seeking to establish equal rights for gay couples in marriage licensing. Now there are five.
These five are not equally matched horses heading for the same finish line. Two of the cases challenge one aspect of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), while the other three seek to strike down statewide bans on gay marriage, arguing they violate the U.S. Constitution.

DEAR WONDERING: Many parents would be delighted for their kids to choose marriage. A wise parent knows that forcing offspring to choose between them and a romantic relationship often results in the younger person choosing the latter. Your daughter knew the risks she was running in terms of her relationship with you when she and her partner chose to marry. She did it anyway. You may assume that she is as stubborn as you are. Because you rule out the option of "agreeing to disagree," you really left your daughter no option but to terminate the relationship.I can only urge you to try harder to find a way to reconcile. If your daughter chooses to have children, you might want to have a relationship with them.

DEAR WONDERING: Many parents would be delighted for their kids to choose marriage. A wise parent knows that forcing offspring to choose between them and a romantic relationship often results in the younger person choosing the latter. Your daughter knew the risks she was running in terms of her relationship with you when she and her partner chose to marry. She did it anyway. You may assume that she is as stubborn as you are. Because you rule out the option of "agreeing to disagree," you really left your daughter no option but to terminate the relationship.I can only urge you to try harder to find a way to reconcile. If your daughter chooses to have children, you might want to have a relationship with them.

‘Hair’ to Go Dark for a Day So Cast Can March for Gay Marriage Rights

In an unusual move for a Broadway show, the producers of the musical “Hair” announced on Monday that they were canceling the Sunday matinee on Oct. 11 so that the cast could join the National Equality March that day in Washington in support of gay-marriage rights. Oskar Eustis, the artistic director of the Public Theater, a producer of “Hair,” said that the decision reflected the spirit of the musical. “Its message of change and hope and inclusion is one we try to live, not just preach,” he said in a statement. The announcement was to be made at a rally in Los Angeles after the “Hair” cast taped a segment there for “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” Monday. A spokesman for “Hair” said the producers were adding a performance for Monday, Oct. 5. People who have tickets to the Oct. 11 matinee can exchange them for another performance.

Post Office Removes Pride Display

A gay pride exhibit installed at the downtown post office in Milwaukee on June 1 stayed on display less than four hours before it was removed by a U.S. Postal Service official, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Maggi Cage, head of the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, was asked to create the exhibit by Dale Shuster, a letter carrier and member of the post office’s diversity team. Shuster secured written approval from the post office’s diversity manager for the exhibit, which included photos of gay pioneers, historical information and a large AIDS awareness stamp in glass cases in the post office lobby.

Four Reasons for Hope on LGBT Rights and the Obama Administration

OK, so you voted for Obama, and you are a big LGBT rights supporter, and you are starting to despair because he has yet to push for the repeal of either DOMA or the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. And to make matters worse, you’ve heard that his Department of Justice filed a brief in a case challenging the constitutionality of DOMA in which it argued that the law is clearly constitutional. The Administration has been hit hard, and rightfully so, on all of these points by LGBT leaders and by the gay blogosphere. But I, for one, do not want to completely lose the sense of optimism that I felt just a few months ago when Obama replaced what was without a doubt the worst and most incompetent administration since that of Herbert Hoover’s. I want to find reasons to still believe that the Obama Administration will do the right thing for LGBT people, and do it relatively soon. Below are four “signs of hope” (and perhaps you can think of more). Please understand that I am not suggesting that these small steps justify the Administration’s refusal so far to push for the repeal of DOMA and of the military’s blatantly discriminatory policy. All I am saying is that these are silver linings of sorts which suggest that perhaps better things are on the way when it comes to how the Administration will handle some of the most important civil rights issues of our time. Move over, Cher. Stevie Nicks has just been declared an icon by the gay community. Specifically, MTV Networks’ gay-themed Logo channel has announced that the Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter will be the first subject of a new series of specials dubbed “NewNowNext Icons.” The shows will focus on “the timeless music legends that have reached icon status in the eyes of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community and the greater world of pop culture,” according to a Logo statement. In the half-hour premiere airing at midnight EDT/PDT on July 19, Nicks will share her thoughts on why the LGBT community has embraced her music and persona, Logo said. She will also discuss her career, inspirations and future projects. Music videos for tunes such as “Landslide,” “Gypsy” and “Stand Back” will also be featured. A Logo spokesman declined to identify the subjects of additional “NewNowNext Icons” specials. Read more

In what is believed to be the largest donation ever given by a lesbian donor to an LGBT archive, Jeanne Córdova (pictured) has made a donation of $30,000 to the ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives in Los Angeles. The donation will be used specifically for the lesbian feminist collections.
“In this newly energized era of LGBT activism, our younger generations are eager to learn about their heritage that’s not taught in schools,” said Córdova in a statement released by ONE. “Lesbian history is a critical part of that heritage.” Read more

The number of drunken drivers on the roads has fallen sharply during the past 30 years amid tougher laws, stiffer enforcement and a shift in societal views on alcohol, a government survey found Monday. A roadside survey released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that 2.2 percent of drivers had blood-alcohol levels of 0.08 or higher in 2007. The results represented a steady decline compared with studies conducted since 1973, when 7.5 percent of the drivers surveyed were legally intoxicated.

‘Hair’ to Go Dark for a Day So Cast Can March for Gay Marriage Rights

In an unusual move for a Broadway show, the producers of the musical “Hair” announced on Monday that they were canceling the Sunday matinee on Oct. 11 so that the cast could join the National Equality March that day in Washington in support of gay-marriage rights. Oskar Eustis, the artistic director of the Public Theater, a producer of “Hair,” said that the decision reflected the spirit of the musical. “Its message of change and hope and inclusion is one we try to live, not just preach,” he said in a statement. The announcement was to be made at a rally in Los Angeles after the “Hair” cast taped a segment there for “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” Monday. A spokesman for “Hair” said the producers were adding a performance for Monday, Oct. 5. People who have tickets to the Oct. 11 matinee can exchange them for another performance.

Post Office Removes Pride Display

A gay pride exhibit installed at the downtown post office in Milwaukee on June 1 stayed on display less than four hours before it was removed by a U.S. Postal Service official, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Maggi Cage, head of the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, was asked to create the exhibit by Dale Shuster, a letter carrier and member of the post office’s diversity team. Shuster secured written approval from the post office’s diversity manager for the exhibit, which included photos of gay pioneers, historical information and a large AIDS awareness stamp in glass cases in the post office lobby.

Four Reasons for Hope on LGBT Rights and the Obama Administration

OK, so you voted for Obama, and you are a big LGBT rights supporter, and you are starting to despair because he has yet to push for the repeal of either DOMA or the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. And to make matters worse, you’ve heard that his Department of Justice filed a brief in a case challenging the constitutionality of DOMA in which it argued that the law is clearly constitutional. The Administration has been hit hard, and rightfully so, on all of these points by LGBT leaders and by the gay blogosphere. But I, for one, do not want to completely lose the sense of optimism that I felt just a few months ago when Obama replaced what was without a doubt the worst and most incompetent administration since that of Herbert Hoover’s. I want to find reasons to still believe that the Obama Administration will do the right thing for LGBT people, and do it relatively soon. Below are four “signs of hope” (and perhaps you can think of more). Please understand that I am not suggesting that these small steps justify the Administration’s refusal so far to push for the repeal of DOMA and of the military’s blatantly discriminatory policy. All I am saying is that these are silver linings of sorts which suggest that perhaps better things are on the way when it comes to how the Administration will handle some of the most important civil rights issues of our time. Cameron, the 42-year-old leader of Britain’s Conservatives, had been discussing his first clear political memory — the May 1979 trial of the head of the Liberal Party, Jeremy Thorpe, a closeted homosexual, for conspiring with a nightclub owner to murder his sometime lover, Norman Scott. That trial, which began the same week as the elections that brought Margaret Thatcher to power, remains a symbol, to a certain sort of Englishman, of the societywide breakdown of the 1970s, which was a decade of currency devaluations, crippling strikes, uncollected garbage and shortened workweeks. The eavesdropper across the aisle said with a smirk that he would vote for Cameron if Cameron could tell him how you fit four Liberals on a bar stool.

Gay Group Ladlad Seeks Comelec Accreditation

MANILA, Philippines—Ladlad, a party-list organization representing homosexual men and women, expressed optimism Wednesday that it would finally be accredited by the Commission on Elections for the 2010 polls.
Ateneo de Manila University professor and Ladlad leader Danton Remoto said the Comelec had assured the group that it would be accredited as a party-list group provided it could prove a national membership.
Remoto said the group now has 22,000 registered members and 10 regional chapters.
In the 2007 elections, the organization was rejected by the poll body on the ground that it did not represent a “marginalized and underprivileged” sector as required by election laws, Remoto said. Read more

Cameron, the 42-year-old leader of Britain’s Conservatives, had been discussing his first clear political memory — the May 1979 trial of the head of the Liberal Party, Jeremy Thorpe, a closeted homosexual, for conspiring with a nightclub owner to murder his sometime lover, Norman Scott. That trial, which began the same week as the elections that brought Margaret Thatcher to power, remains a symbol, to a certain sort of Englishman, of the societywide breakdown of the 1970s, which was a decade of currency devaluations, crippling strikes, uncollected garbage and shortened workweeks. The eavesdropper across the aisle said with a smirk that he would vote for Cameron if Cameron could tell him how you fit four Liberals on a bar stool.

The recent news that Harvard was establishing a new chair in Gay Lesbian Transgendered and Queer Studies, in the wake of a 22% drop in the university's endowment value, suggested that nothing could curtail expenditures on the progressive agenda in the modern academy. But this week brought some indication that even Harvard will have to confront the recession. Not only did it lay off almost 300 employees, but it actually suspended the operations of its Office of Sexual Assault, Prevention, and Response for the month of July. The university indicated that the office's services were duplicated elsewhere. This summer, someone else will have to sponsor events it previously offered -- like "Hooking Up: Hot Hints for a Great Sex Life" and "Choose Your Own Sex Adventure."

Re the July 2 story Mennonites protest church exclusion of gays: Gay Mennonites don't like that they are not permitted to worship in Mennonite churches. Big deal. If they really feel a need to be in a church, they should go to another one that will accept them. Prejudice will begin to die away when religious groups realize that their numbers are decreasing because people, gay and straight, are no longer tolerant of bigotry. Leaving and joining another organization, religious or not, is probably the most powerful statement that a gay person can make.

Re the July 2 story Mennonites protest church exclusion of gays: Gay Mennonites don't like that they are not permitted to worship in Mennonite churches. Big deal. If they really feel a need to be in a church, they should go to another one that will accept them. Prejudice will begin to die away when religious groups realize that their numbers are decreasing because people, gay and straight, are no longer tolerant of bigotry. Leaving and joining another organization, religious or not, is probably the most powerful statement that a gay person can make.

WHEN THE Philadelphia Gay and Lesbian Film Festival premiered 15 years ago, “Will and Grace” wasn’t on TV, “Brokeback Mountain” hadn’t won an Oscar, and gay marriage was legal in exactly zero states. Pretty soon though, the community that had at first embraced the festival had a problem. “People complained that it was the ‘gay and lesbian’ film festival instead of the GLBT film festival,” said Raymond Murray, citing the acronym that includes gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Murray, who founded the festival back in 1995 and remains its artistic director today, is vigilant about selecting a range of films that represent the diversity of the community, but he was reluctant to begin adding letters onto what was already a somewhat unwieldy name. The Anchorage Assembly worked its way through another round of public testimony Tuesday night on the controversial proposal to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and Assemblyman Matt Claman barely got the three votes he needed to introduce the idea of putting the question on the ballot at next spring’s city election. Claman’s latest move, which is a separate effort from the proposed ordinance that has been getting public comment for weeks now, would ask voters to change the city’s charter to add sexual orientation to the list of characteristics protected under the charter’s bill of rights and equal protection sections. It will need support from eight of the 11 Assembly members to reach the ballot, but Claman conceded he had a hard time even finding a third vote just to set it for a public hearing. Claman originally said he thought sending the question to voters might short-circuit the Assembly’s protracted consideration of three related versions of the anti-discrimination ordinance this summer. Tuesday night, however, he said he now expects the Assembly to conclude public hearings on the anti-discrimination ordinances and vote on them. Read more

The National Education Association adopted two resolutions calling for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights at its annual conference last week. The resolutions say that the organization opposes the “discriminatory treatment of same-sex couples and its belief that such couples should have the same legal rights and benefits as similarly-situated heterosexual couples.” They also call for the “passage of a federal statute prohibiting federal discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.” The NEA also committed itself to supporting the enactment of LGBT equality at local, state and federal levels.

NEA calls for LGBT rights

The National Education Association adopted two resolutions calling for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights at its annual conference last week. The resolutions say that the organization opposes the “discriminatory treatment of same-sex couples and its belief that such couples should have the same legal rights and benefits as similarly-situated heterosexual couples.” They also call for the “passage of a federal statute prohibiting federal discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.” The NEA also committed itself to supporting the enactment of LGBT equality at local, state and federal levels.

Gay killing 'was self-defence'

Should Wisconsin Have a More Inclusive Partner Registry?

Wisconsin made history last week with the passage of its domestic partner registry because it is the first state with a “super DOMA” to take such a step. A word about “super DOMAs.” These are the constitutional amendments passed by states that reject not only marriage for same-sex couples but legal protections for or recognition of unmarried couples of any sexual orientation. Because of such a DOMA, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled last year that its public employers (like the University of Michigan) could not provide domestic partner benefits.

A few weeks ago there was a furor when the budget office “scored” two incomplete Senate health reform proposals — that is, estimated their costs and likely impacts over the next 10 years. One proposal came in more expensive than expected; the other didn’t cover enough people. Health reform, it seemed, was in trouble. But last week the budget office scored the full proposed legislation from the Senate committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP). MI: Kalamazoo Passes Protection for Gay, Lesbian and Transgender People

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) - It’s now illegal for landlords and employers in Kalamazoo to discriminate against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. “I have a hard time understanding why anyone has the need to discriminate against others,” said City Commissioner Sean McCann before voting for the ordinance Monday night.
