A Conservative’s Road to Same-Sex Marriage Advocacy

Theodore B. Olson’s office is a testament to his iconic status in the conservative legal movement. A framed photograph of Ronald Reagan, the first of two Republican presidents Mr. Olson served, is warmly inscribed with “heartfelt thanks.” Fifty-five white quills commemorate each of his appearances before the Supreme Court, where he most famously argued the 2000 election case that put George W. Bush in the White House. On the bookshelf sits a Defense Department medal honoring his legal defense of Mr. Bush’s counterterrorism policies after Sept. 11.

Back in May, when news broke that David Boies was teaming up with Ted Olson in a lawsuit to strike down California’s Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage in the Golden State, some LB readers voice skepticism. Why, they wondered, would Ted Olson, a known conservative who represented George W. Bush during the Florida recount litigation in 2000, be taking on such a cause? Was he legitimately committed to gay marriage? Or was he secretly hoping to rush the issue to a U.S. Supreme Court that, at least in its current alignment, might not seem all that receptive to a Prop 8 challenge?

We were both refugees from Christianity — snarky young existentialists who wanted nothing to do with “church” at this moment in our lives. But we had no problem with “civil marriage.”

On Aug. 4, the American Psychological Association adopted a resolution that says there's no scientific evidence that therapy can make gay people straight. TN School District Dumps Filters that Block LGBT Sites

A federal court has dismissed a lawsuit against two Tennessee school districts for agreeing to stop using Internet filters that block access to information about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues (LGBT). The Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and Knox County Schools agreed to the settlement after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit on May 19 saying that the filters were censoring important educational information. The suit was filed on behalf of three Nashville high school students, as well as a Knoxville student and high school librarian, who is also the advisor of her school’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). America Is Still Paying for the Sin of Slavery

I was in and out last week, and this week will be the same. I did want to comment briefly on the current health care “debate.” It’s depressing that some people think other people (or even themselves) going to the doctor will destroy the country. All this foreign usurper stuff is undoubtedly related to the current protesters against health care, and I seriously doubt that they’d be up in arms if Bush were pushing for the same sort of moderate health care reforms Obama’s pushing for. But the title refers to more than Obama’s skin color. No, the reason Truman wasn’t able to get universal health care was because, fundamentally, poor and working class conservatives, especially Southerners, oppose social services because they think undeserving black people will get them. Slavery, especially post-Enlightenment, was a system that required a fundamental disavowal of the value of certain humans (and autonomy, democracy, and humanity themselves) in order to work. Several centuries of it caused the basic ways we see the world to change. It created a breed of people who identify more with the interests of rich people than other poor people. It’s Pavlovian in that most of these folks don’t even know enough to know why they’re protesting against health care, but they know the people they trust to tell them what’s right are saying this will kill grandma and destroy America, so they pull out their guns and head down to a town hall. It’s not about different reasoning or values or experiences.

Residence for homeless gay youth named for Beatrice Arthur
News release from Ali Forney Center: New York, NY….The Ali Forney Center (AFC), the nation's largest organization dedicated to homeless LGBT youth, will formally announce it's plan to name a residence for LGBT youth in honor of Bea Arthur at her memorial service on September 14th at the Majestic Theater in New York City. The Ali Forney Center is working with a group of Bea's close friends and colleagues to plan the memorial service.

More than 1,500 organizations have health-care lobbyists, and about three more are signing up each day. These groups spent $263.4 million on lobbying during the first six months of 2009, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington-based research group, more than any other industry. TN School District Dumps Filters that Block LGBT Sites

A federal court has dismissed a lawsuit against two Tennessee school districts for agreeing to stop using Internet filters that block access to information about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues (LGBT). The Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and Knox County Schools agreed to the settlement after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit on May 19 saying that the filters were censoring important educational information. The suit was filed on behalf of three Nashville high school students, as well as a Knoxville student and high school librarian, who is also the advisor of her school’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). America Is Still Paying for the Sin of Slavery

I was in and out last week, and this week will be the same. I did want to comment briefly on the current health care “debate.” It’s depressing that some people think other people (or even themselves) going to the doctor will destroy the country. All this foreign usurper stuff is undoubtedly related to the current protesters against health care, and I seriously doubt that they’d be up in arms if Bush were pushing for the same sort of moderate health care reforms Obama’s pushing for. But the title refers to more than Obama’s skin color. No, the reason Truman wasn’t able to get universal health care was because, fundamentally, poor and working class conservatives, especially Southerners, oppose social services because they think undeserving black people will get them. Slavery, especially post-Enlightenment, was a system that required a fundamental disavowal of the value of certain humans (and autonomy, democracy, and humanity themselves) in order to work. Several centuries of it caused the basic ways we see the world to change. It created a breed of people who identify more with the interests of rich people than other poor people. It’s Pavlovian in that most of these folks don’t even know enough to know why they’re protesting against health care, but they know the people they trust to tell them what’s right are saying this will kill grandma and destroy America, so they pull out their guns and head down to a town hall. It’s not about different reasoning or values or experiences.

This latter-day epiphany from the man who signed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex unions, earned warm praise from gay activists. "I personally support people doing what they want to do," Clinton said, and people seemed to believe his apparent change of heart.

As adoptive parents, we are very cognizant of the fact that too many children out there are in need of safe, loving and nurturing homes. The ban that exists today in the state of Florida in regard to same-sex couples being able to adopt is absurd.
Get it off the books and do it posthaste. Time is wasting, and so are some of those children.

Georgie’s Alibi owners Mark Negrete and Jackson Padgett are locked in a legal dispute with their fellow minority bar owners Dennis Bellehumeur and Garrison “Gary” Smith, over access to financial records. In November 2007, Bellehumeur and Smith purchased 28 1/3 percent of Gat Bar Inc., the parent corporation of Georgie’s Alibi. They spent close to $1 million, with about $727,000 of it in a secured note to be paid off completely in four years. Bellehumeur, a real-estate agent, previously owned Dorothy’s Deli, a restaurant that existed where the current Starbucks on NE 26th St. sits. Smith also worked at Alibi’s, and is named as the licensee of the bar’s liquor license.

Equality Florida lobbies auto insurer to change policy

The American Automobile Association Club South has agreed to provide the same benefits to same-sex couples as they do to married straight couples. AAA is an automotive club that offers roadside assistance, insurance, discounts and travel planning for its members. The nationwide AAA is made up of 69 individual clubs in North America and each club is allowed to set its own membership rules. There are about 50 million members total in the entire organization.

Study Rates Inclusion of Gay TV Characters

Cable channels outpaced the broadcast networks in the third annual Network Responsibility Index compiled by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, which analyzes the amount of prime-time television hours that feature gay, bisexual and transgender characters, the group said Monday in a news release. According to the report, for which Glaad reviewed more than 4,900 hours of prime-time programming on the five major networks and more than 1,200 hours on 10 cable networks, such characters are represented in 42 percent of HBO’s programming hours, and 26 percent of Showtime’s. ABC led the broadcast networks with 24 percent, with CW at 20 percent, Fox at 11 percent, NBC 8 percent and CBS 5 percent.

Anglican Sees Way To Reconcile on Gays
The archbishop of Canterbury says the Anglican Church may have to accept a "two track" communion in which believers can hold different opinions about gay clergy and same-sex unions.
Rowan Williams wrote on his Web site Monday that there are "two styles of being Anglican" and that both sides should work together to maintain the church.
Williams is the Anglican spiritual leader. His comments are in response to a decision this month by the U.S. Episcopal Church, a member of the Anglican Communion, to authorize bishops to bless same-sex unions and research an official prayer for the ceremonies.

Study Rates Inclusion of Gay TV Characters

Cable channels outpaced the broadcast networks in the third annual Network Responsibility Index compiled by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, which analyzes the amount of prime-time television hours that feature gay, bisexual and transgender characters, the group said Monday in a news release. According to the report, for which Glaad reviewed more than 4,900 hours of prime-time programming on the five major networks and more than 1,200 hours on 10 cable networks, such characters are represented in 42 percent of HBO’s programming hours, and 26 percent of Showtime’s. ABC led the broadcast networks with 24 percent, with CW at 20 percent, Fox at 11 percent, NBC 8 percent and CBS 5 percent.

Anglican Sees Way To Reconcile on Gays
The archbishop of Canterbury says the Anglican Church may have to accept a "two track" communion in which believers can hold different opinions about gay clergy and same-sex unions.
Rowan Williams wrote on his Web site Monday that there are "two styles of being Anglican" and that both sides should work together to maintain the church.
Williams is the Anglican spiritual leader. His comments are in response to a decision this month by the U.S. Episcopal Church, a member of the Anglican Communion, to authorize bishops to bless same-sex unions and research an official prayer for the ceremonies.

To the Editor: Re Jennifer Schuessler’s review of “The Tall Book,” by Arianne Cohen (July 12): Today I can buy long-sleeved pink men’s shirts and chartreuse men’s Levi’s, and nobody thinks they aren’t women’s clothes. As a tall woman, I am eternally grateful to the gay rights movement, which made “feminine” clothing accessible to long-armed, long-legged people of any gender. So much for the stigma of wearing men’s trousers.

The Battle Over a Baby

On Christmas Eve in 2007, the State of West Virginia bestowed upon Kathryn Kutil and Cheryl Hess of Oak Hill a relative rarity in the foster-care system: a newborn. The baby girl, TiCasey, was born on Dec. 8 to a longtime drug addict, father unknown, and entered the world with cocaine, opiates and benzodiazepines in her bloodstream. For two weeks after delivery, she went through withdrawal, unable to sleep and crying incessantly. When not being held by a hospital nurse, she was put in special rocking machines to help relieve her pain. Still suffering from tremors and extended crying jags, TiCasey arrived at Kutil and Hess’s home, where she was met by five other foster children all clamoring to hold her.
