Court rules man would face torture, possible execution if forced to return home
David Bromfield claimed if he was ordered to return home to Jamaica, he would suffer torture and possibly death in the notoriously hostile-to-gays environment of the country. Jamaica actively prosecutes GLBT citizens, enforcing the "Offenses Against the Person Act," which prohibits acts of "gross indecency," which is generally interpreted as any kind of physical intimacy between men, in public or in private. The government punishes homosexuals by up to 10 years' imprisonment. Originally his plea was denied, but he appealed and the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with his assertation. The court granted him political asylum, citing a 2005 U.S. State Department Country Report for Jamaica that found a "culture of severe discrimination" in the country against homosexuals, rife with physical attacks from citizens and police. Finally, there is hope for GLBT kids in the Foster Care System
For years, Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgendered Children in the Foster Care System have suffered from prejudice and abuse. These children are at risk for suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, HIV and aids, and often become homeless. For years, there has been nowhere for these kids to turn. Now there is! Finally, here in Dade County , there is a solution. Family Resource Center , a full service foster care agency with a long track record of exemplary service, has inaugurated a ground breaking, innovative program designed to meet the needs of our most vulnerable children. If you or someone you know has ever considered becoming a parent, please read on. If you or someone you know is a member of an organization whose members might be interested in becoming parents, please read on. If you or someone you know would like to help this project move forward, please read on. Family Resource Center will provide enriched training for prospective foster parents to provide them with the tools for building a successful and loving family. A full program of services and support will be available to those who take in children so desperately in need of love and acceptance. In choosing to take this step you will join a tightly knit, supportive community of people like yourselves who want to make a difference in the life of a child. More than 20 years after it first opened to serve people with AIDS in the metro Atlanta area and beyond, the grassroots organization AIDS Survival Project is set to close its doors in June 2009 due to waning funding. Most services will cease at the end of this year, Dec. 31, and most staff will also leave at the end of the year. Christian gospel singer Roy Boltz has come out of the closet to announce he is gay in an interview with the Washington Blade. The contemporary Christian music singer-songwriter said he has struggled with the truth of his sexual orientation for over 30 years. Boltz told the Blade he came out to his family and friends in 2004, including his four children and now ex-wife. The Dove Award-winning singer, who as sold over four million records, said he simply could no longer avoid the truth that he was gay. In a message posted on his website, Boltz says he was afraid that if people "knew who I really was, I would never be accepted."

The Dove Award-winning singer, who as sold over four million records, said he simply could no longer avoid the truth that he was gay. In a message posted on his website, Boltz says he was afraid that if people "knew who I really was, I would never be accepted."

A University of Maryland study shows that deaths from wars of all kinds have been dropping dramatically for 20 years and are lower now than at any point in the past half century. A study from Simon Fraser University finds that casualties from terrorism have been steadily declining since Sept. 11, 2001. It is increasingly clear -- look at their voting from Indonesia to Iraq to Pakistan -- that very few Muslims anywhere support Islamic fundamentalists. More countries than ever before now embrace capitalism and democracy.

spotted him riding his bicycle with 4 to 5 inches of blue-and-black boxer

We'll pay the cost of private toll road
Faced with desperate budget deficits, Gov. Charlie Crist has proposed a
number of privatization deals to build or operate roads. Private investors
would borrow upfront cash to pay the state and then charge decades of
escalating tolls to Florida drivers. Furthest along among these deals is
Alligator Alley, which runs from Fort Lauderdale and Naples and is already
at a second stage of bidding by toll companies. Not far behind is a proposal
to lease the Sunshine Skyway bridge along I-275, the BeachLine Expressway in
Orange and Brevard counties and the Pinellas Bayway System in Pinellas
County. Also under consideration is a long-term toll concession to connect
I-10 on the western side of Jacksonville and I-95 in northern St. Johns
County. ... Much like the recent spate of no-money-down mortgages, private
toll-road deals are driven by a profitable new industry that offers a quick
solution to short-term cash-flow problems. The new highway merchants offer
politicians upfront cash, innovative financing and tolls that typically
start low and grow steeply over time. Profits increase with greater traffic,
higher tolls and less investment in the roadway -- interests at odds with
those of the public.

-House to vote on offshore drilling Tuesday
The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on Tuesday on a
comprehensive energy package that would open most of the U.S. coastline to
offshore drilling, a Democratic aide said on Monday. The package proposed
by Democrats would give states the option to allow drilling between 50 and
100 miles (80 and 160 km) off their shores. Areas more than 100 miles from
the coast would be completely open to oil exploration.

-Big Coal vs. Renewable, Cleaner Energy
The federal government is in bed with the coal industry. A prime example is
the $2 million spent in advertising at both the Democratic and Republican
conventions by the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE).
Founded this year, the ACCCE combined the Center for Energy and Economic
Development and Americans for Balanced Energy Choices. Already the ACCCE has
spent $4.7 million on lobbying, according to a Center for Public Integrity

No, the embarrassing law hasn't been overturned. Yet. Florida remains one of
two states in the nation - Mississippi is the other - to ban gay adoption.
But when a circuit judge in Monroe County ruled the 31-year-old ban
unconstitutional, thus allowing a gay foster parent to adopt a teenage boy
he has raised since 2001, it chipped another hole in the shameful ban. The
fact that gay adoption is allowed virtually everywhere else tells you plenty
about this anachronistic, mean-spirited Florida law.

A nonpartisan race on Aug. 26 for a county court judgeship remains
unresolved. One candidate held a small lead when ballots were tabulated on
election night; then, officials declared his opponent the victor when he

RIVIERA BEACH - A judge says Riviera Beach's "saggy pants" law is

the law tossed altogether. Julius Hart was charged Wednesday when an officer
spotted him riding his bicycle with 4 to 5 inches of blue-and-black boxer
shorts sticking out of his black pants. A first offense carries a $150 fine
or a requirement of community service; only habitual offenders face jail
time.

she attends synagogue. The caller then asked if Marcus would be influenced
if she learned that Obama had donated money to the Palestine Liberation
Organization. The caller also asked how she would vote if she learned that
someone on the Illinois senator's staff had close ties to Palestine.
Marcus, a 71-year-old former college professor, said she was furious.

Faced with desperate budget deficits, Gov. Charlie Crist has proposed a
number of privatization deals to build or operate roads. Private investors
would borrow upfront cash to pay the state and then charge decades of
escalating tolls to Florida drivers. Furthest along among these deals is
Alligator Alley, which runs from Fort Lauderdale and Naples and is already
at a second stage of bidding by toll companies. Not far behind is a proposal
to lease the Sunshine Skyway bridge along I-275, the BeachLine Expressway in
Orange and Brevard counties and the Pinellas Bayway System in Pinellas
County. Also under consideration is a long-term toll concession to connect
I-10 on the western side of Jacksonville and I-95 in northern St. Johns
County. ... Much like the recent spate of no-money-down mortgages, private
toll-road deals are driven by a profitable new industry that offers a quick
solution to short-term cash-flow problems. The new highway merchants offer
politicians upfront cash, innovative financing and tolls that typically
start low and grow steeply over time. Profits increase with greater traffic,
higher tolls and less investment in the roadway -- interests at odds with
those of the public.

My long years of discontent began in September, 1999. Just months after Jeb became governor, I began writing op-ed columns for this newspaper. Immediately, I saw that he wasn't satisfied just being Florida's chief executive; he was a man on a messianic mission. On the Christian equivalent of a hadj, he was hell-bent on imposing a religious agenda on our secular state and everyone in it. In part it was payback to the Religious Right that helped elect him; in part, it was because of his relatively recent conversion to Catholicism. In all, his drift was state-sponsored religion.

Here in Florida, we're among the worst offenders for turning our backs on the mentally ill. If you are physically ill, your health insurance or Medicare coverage will cover your treatment. But for mental health, the rules aredifferent.

On the Christian equivalent of a hadj, he was hell-bent on imposing a religious agenda on our secular state and everyone in it. In part it was payback to the Religious Right that helped elect him; in part, it was because of his relatively recent conversion to Catholicism. In all, his drift was state-sponsored religion.

Do you know someone with a mental illness? You probably do, whether you realize it or not. There is terrible stigma that still causes many people to try to hide mental illnesses and not seek out the treatment they need,while many look the other way, so you might be surprised some expertsestimate one in four of us will have a mental illness at some time in our lives, and about one in ten suffer from long-term mental illness. Here in Florida, we're among the worst offenders for turning our backs on the mentally ill. If you are physically ill, your health insurance or Medicare coverage will cover your treatment. But for mental health, the rules aredifferent.

What was once a three-year supply of homes has dwindled to a two-year supply as builders stop building and frustrated sellers take down the for-sale signs in their yards. "That's a really positive indicator for the future of this market. We've said all along that until the inventory comes down, there's no reason for buyers to buy," said Jack McCabe, a Deerfield Beach-based analyst who for several years has predicted doom for the housing market.
