Fantasies on Iraq
Political speeches on the war's anniversary have in common the promise ofthe impossible.
THE FIFTH anniversary of the invasion of Iraq prompted a flurry of speechesfrom President Bush and the Democratic candidates who hope to inherit theWhite House next year. Sadly, what they had in common was their failure tograpple with hard realities -- beginning with the elusiveness of any clearor quick path toward Mr. Bush's promise of "victory," or that of HillaryClinton and Barack Obama to "end this war."

However, in the pollster version of a smackdown, some of Pew'sfindings are getting an argument from the go-to research center for allthings Catholic--the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) atGeorgetown University.

Barack Obama: "We the people, in order to form a more perfect union."
Barack Obama
Video of Tuesday's speech is at link, below.
Two hundred and twenty one years ago, in a hall that still stands across thestreet, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launchedAmerica's improbable experiment in democracy. Farmers and scholars; statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyrannyand persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at aPhiladelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787. Thedocument they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. Itwas stained by this nation's original sin of slavery, a question thatdivided the colonies and brought the convention to a stalemate until thefounders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least twenty moreyears, and to leave any final resolution to future generations.

Senator Misstates Which Extremists Are Aided by Iran
By Cameron W. Barr and Michael D. Shear
AMMAN, Jordan, March 18 -- Sen. John McCain, in the midst of a trip to theMiddle East that he hoped would help burnish his foreign policy expertise, incorrectly asserted Tuesday that Iran is training and supplying al-Qaeda inIraq, confusing the Sunni insurgent group with the Shiite extremists whoU.S. officials believe are supported by their religious brethren in theneighboring country. The mistake, which he quickly corrected after a briefwhisper from a colleague, was an unwelcome stumble as McCain (Ariz.), theall-but-certain Republican nominee for the White House, spends seven days inthe Middle East and Europe.

Obama's Road Map on Race
Once again, the conventional wisdom proved stunningly unwise. Barack Obamawas supposed to be on his heels, forced into a backpedaling, defensivecrouch after racially charged remarks by his former pastor, delivered fromthe pulpit years ago, suddenly became the hottest story of the presidentialcampaign. But instead of running away, Obama issued a challenge to those whowould exploit the issue of race: Bring it on.

4,000 Americans, innumerable Iraqis, $3 trillion
By LEONARD PITTS JR.
And five years later, here we are. There were no weapons of massdestruction. We were not greeted as liberators. The war did not pay foritself. The smoking gun was not a mushroom cloud. There was no connection to9/11. The course we stayed led over a cliff. Worse, Iraq has become arecruiting station for Islamic terrorists. One presidential candidateforesees a 100-year occupation. Electricity is still a sometime thing inBaghdad. The war that was supposed to pay for itself was recently projectedto cost us $3 trillion -- that's trillion, with a ''t,'' that's a threefollowed by 12 zeroes, that's three million millions. And American forceshave sustained more than 33,000 casualties, including 4,000 dead and 13,000wounded too severely to return to action. Pundits and politicians will spenda lot of time debating the war in Iraq on this, its fifth anniversary. Theywill analyze what we have achieved, pontificate on where we should go fromhere. I will leave those arguments to them.

Row over Greek unmarried couples
Archbishop Ieronimos was elected leader of the Church in FebruaryThe Greek Orthodox Church has expressed opposition to plans by the Athens government to give greater rights to unmarried couples. The Church's governing synod said it considered all common-law marriages to be tantamount to "prostitution". The government proposes to give common-law couples the same rights as those who have gone through legal or religious ceremonies. It wants to harmonise Greek law to European standards. The new law would allow unmarried couples to make their relationship legally binding, by signing a simple notarial contract.

To our neighbors, my wife, Nancy, and I don't appear in the least unusual. To those in the quiet Oregon community where we live, we are viewed just aswe are -- a happy couple deeply in love. Our desire to work hard, buy ourfirst home, and start a family was nothing out of the ordinary. That is,until we decided that I would carry our child. I am transgender, legallymale, and legally married to Nancy. Unlike those in same-sex marriages, domestic partnerships, or civil unions, Nancy and I are afforded the morethan 1,100 federal rights of marriage. Sterilization is not a requirementfor sex reassignment, so I decided to have chest reconstruction andtestosterone therapy but kept my reproductive rights. Wanting to have abiological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire.

In their typically fumbling fashion, the people's representatives in theMaryland General Assembly have been trying to figure out what to do aboutproposals to legalize gay marriage, set up civil unions, enact some limitedversion of the latter, reaffirm one-man-one-woman marriage, or just repairto the bar and forget about the whole thing. Before the abusive automaticresponses kick in, let me try to be clear about the essentials. I'm notinterested in church so much as state. Religious denominations determinewhether marriages can be performed by their adherents.

Why Shariah?
Last month, Rowan Williams, the archbishop of Canterbury, gave a nuanced, scholarly lecture in London about whether the British legal system should allow non-Christian courts to decide certain matters of family law. Britain has no constitutional separation of church and state. The archbishop noted that "the law of the Church of England is the law of the land" there; indeed, ecclesiastical courts that once handled marriage and divorce are still integrated into the British legal system, deciding matters of church property and doctrine. His tentative suggestion was that, subject to the agreement of all parties and the strict requirement of protecting equal rights for women, it might be a good idea to consider allowing Islamic and Orthodox Jewish courts to handle marriage and divorce.

Is sex story newsworthy? You decide
Funny, Republicans aren't yelping these days about The New York Times reporting on sex and politicians. When Sen. John McCain was the subject, the Times was guilty of shoddy journalism. When Gov. Eliot Spitzer was the target, the Times was practicing first-rate journalism.

The Pimps' Slaves
Reading between the sheets, the world of "Kristen" and Eliot Spitzer may seem relatively benign. She may have been abused as a child, and tangled with drugs and homelessness, but she was also a consenting adult who apparently kept half the cash that customers paid for her.
