Amendment 5 would have eliminated a largeshare of school property taxes and replaced the money with a higher salestax and ... something else. -Marriage Woes? Maybe It's in His Genes
By SHANKAR VEDANTAM | Washington Post | Star Tribune
Men are more likely to be devoted and loyal husbands when they lack aparticular variant of a gene that influences brain activity, researchersannounced this week - the first time science has shown a direct link betweena man's genes and his aptitude for monogamy. The finding is strikingbecause it not only links the gene variant - present in two of every fivemen - with the risk of marital discord and divorce, but also appears topredict whether women involved with these men are likely to say theirpartners are emotionally close and available, or distant and disagreeable. The presence of the gene variant, or allele, also seems predictive ofwhether men get married or live with women without getting married.

The word "experience" appears 91 times in the Federalist Papers, thosedistillations of conservative sense and sensibility. Madison, Hamilton andJay said that truths are "taught" and "corroborated" by experience. Thesewriters were eager to "consult" and be "led" by experience. CONSERVATIVE ANDREW SULLIVAN QUOTES AN ALASKAN FROM WASILIA..
SARAH PALIN'S HOMETOWN.
-A Shameless Plug
If you want to read a deeper discussion that helps explain why the GOP isnow in a public mental breakdown, I remain proud of my 2006 book, "TheConservative Soul," which was widely scorned and reviled by the right whenit wasn't outright ignored. If you want to know why a once decent, honorable, if erratic figure like John McCain came to pick a total unknownwith a Down Syndrome baby as his replacement as war-president, you have tounderstand the immense importance of the Christianist base. McCain isn'tone of them, however much he tries to re-tell his life-story to make it so.They know it, he knows it, and he needed a religious running mate. He mighthave succeeded with Pawlenty, who is a solid pick that a mature andresponsible campaign would have selected in a heartbeat. Instead - partlyout of insane cynicism (did he really believe Hillary's voters would switchover to vote for Palin?), partly out of a shallow liking for a shallowreading of Palin's record, and partly out of pure negligence - he pickedPalin, barely knowing her. And so religious fundamentalism, as it alwayswill, swamps the frontal cortex required for effective governance and givesus this reality show disgrace as serious politics. Has America really cometo this? Yes it has. The debate over whether the Republican party is nowunfit for public office at a national level is now resolved. The longer, deeper explaination for this is in my book. One day, we will revive realconservatism. Right now, we have to ensure that this insane circusmasquerading as a serious political party is defeated.

The Daily Dish
by Andrew Sullivan
-This was posted in the comments section on the Washington Independent byAlaskan and a Wasillan, Anne .Kilkenny, someone who has followed Sarah Palinvery, very closely - with too many city council meetings under her belt -not to say her piece. ...Kilkenny: Her experience is as mayor of a citywith a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years asgovernor of a state with about 670,000 residents. During her mayoraladministration most of the actual work of running this small city was turnedover to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator byparty power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble overprecipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign. Sarahcampaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative". During her 6 years asMayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. Duringthose same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reducedprogressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxedeven food. ...Sullivan: The debate over whether the Republican party isnow unfit for public office at a national level is now resolved. The longer, deeper explaination for this is in my book. One day, we will revive realconservatism. Right now, we have to ensure that this insane circusmasquerading as a serious political party is defeated.

McCain Doesn't Get It: Women are NOT that stupid
by Barbra Streisand
Maybe he was sick of the lack of media attention.maybe he had enough of thelate night talk show hosts poking fun at his age.maybe he realized thatbelonging to a party that has been associated with rich, white men was notgoing to connect with voters in this historical election year. Or maybe hewas just ready to take back some of the spotlight that has shined sobrightly on Barack Obama and the Democrats since the beginning of theDemocratic convention. Desperation can motivate people to make some prettycynical and hypocritical decisions. Whatever the reason, John McCain's HailMary-- in the form of Vice Presidential pick Governor Sarah Palin--sent avery clear message to America about how he views female voters. Women, hethinks, will vote another woman into office regardless of the candidate'svalues, experience and political positions. No one can dispute that thisdecision was micro-targeted to the small percentage of Independent andDemocratic women residing in the Rocky Mountain West, who strongly supportedHillary Clinton in the primary and still find themselves undecided as wemove into the general election. Unfortunately, what John McCain failed torealize is that after eight long and destructive years of George W. Bush,Dick Cheney and their cronies, American voters will not fall prey topolitical ploys once again.

-Impulse, Meet Experience
The word "experience" appears 91 times in the Federalist Papers, thosedistillations of conservative sense and sensibility. Madison, Hamilton andJay said that truths are "taught" and "corroborated" by experience. Thesewriters were eager to "consult" and be "led" by experience. They spoke of"indubitable" and "unequivocal" lessons from experience, the "testimony" ofexperience and "the accumulated experience of ages." "Accumulating"experience is "the parent of wisdom" and a "guide" that "justifies,""confirms" and can "admonish." America's Founders were empiricists andstudents of history who trusted "that best oracle of wisdom, experience,"which is humanity's "least fallible guide."

-Was a Would-Be Saint Gay?
The long-running battle between gay rights activists and the Vatican hasmoved into the realm of the dead. With 19th century Anglican convertCardinal John Henry Newman, arguably the greatest Catholic thinker from theEnglish-speaking world, moving ever closer to sainthood, trouble is brewingover where his final resting place should be. The London-born historian andtheologian died in 1890 and, following the instructions in his will, wasburied beside his lifelong friend and fellow convert Ambrose St. John, whohad died 15 years earlier. Newman's deep expressions of grief after St.John's death, along with other writings, have led some historians to askwhether the two men, who lived together for many years, lived much likecommon-law spouses. newman, whose ideas on conscience and faith haveinfluenced Christian theology ever since, is expected to be beatified nextyear following the Vatican's recent certification of a Newman miracle - whena Boston man's cure from a crippling spinal disease could not be explainedmedically. The final step of canonization - full Sainthood - will requireproof of an additional miracle achieved through the intercession of Newman'sspirit.

He said: "I have ever thought nobereavement was equal to that of a husband's or a wife's, but I feel itdifficult to believe that any can be greater, or any one's sorrow greater, than mine."

This nearly deserted city appeared to have escaped threats of full-scaledevastation on Monday when Hurricane Gustav came ashore 70 miles to thesouthwest, bearing winds and rain far less formidable than earlier forecast. The storm smashed through the bayou country of rural Louisiana, raisingfears of widespread coastal erosion and damage to fishing villages thatstate officials were unable to confirm Monday evening. But before makinglandfall, it was downgraded from a Category 3 hurricane to Category 2 whenits winds slowed to 110 miles per hour, from 115 m.p.h., and state officialssaid they believed that their worst fears had not been realized.

John McCain is not a normal conservative. He has instincts, but few abstract convictions about the proper size of government. The Democrats need to be careful about the intensity of their criticism ofSarah Palin. When Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska was introduced as a vice-presidential pick, she was presented as a magnet for female voters, the epitome of every mom appeal. With five children, including an infant with Down syndrome and, as the country learned Monday, apregnant 17-year-old, Ms. Palin has set off a fierce argument among womenabout whether there are enough hours in the day for her to take on the vicepresidency, and whether she is right to try.

When the Census Bureau released its new population projections last month, most of the media focused on the country's changing racial composition. Butthis was almost certainly not the most important finding. The projectionsshow that the U.S. population will grow by 135 million in just 42 years -- a44 percent increase. Such growth would have profound implications for ourenvironment and quality of life. Most of the increase would be a directresult of one federal policy -- immigration. A series of disclosures about Gov. Sarah Palin, Senator John McCain's choiceas running mate, called into question on Monday how thoroughly Mr. McCainhad examined her background before putting her on the Republicanpresidential ticket.

For at least the time being, Gov. Sarah Palin appears to have survived theinitial test after the disclosure that her unmarried teenage daughter waspregnant. -Op-Ed Columnist: What the Palin Pick Says
John McCain is not a normal conservative. He has instincts, but few abstract convictions about the proper size of government. He's a traditionalist, butis not energized by the social conservative agenda. As Rush Limbaughunderstands, but the Democrats apparently do not, a McCain administrationwould not be like a Bush administration.

-Op-Ed Columnist: Head for the High Road
The Democrats need to be careful about the intensity of their criticism ofSarah Palin. She may look like an easy target, an appalling lightweight whowill send serious voters scurrying to the more substantive Obama-Bidenticket. And the temptation to get on her case probably became greater withMs. Palin's disclosure Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.

-A New Twist in the Debate Over Mothers
When Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska was introduced as a vice-presidential pick, she was presented as a magnet for female voters, the epitome of every mom appeal. But since then, as mothers across the country supervise the season's final water fights and pack book bags, some have voiced the kind of doubtsthat few male pundits have dared raise on television.

If we reduced the level ofimmigration, the projections would be much lower. The question we have toask ourselves is: Do we want to be a much more densely settled country?

-Oakland Park seeks humane solution to feral cat problem
The city has stopped removing wild cats from city property as it seeks another solution to its feline problem - preferably a humane one. Nine feral cats were euthanized in February after they were trapped at the city's Public Works Operations building, 5100 NE 12th Terrace, according to Lisa Mendheim, spokeswoman for Broward County's Animal Care and Regulation Division. Now, city commissioners want to ensure the remaining cats are kept alive. "I do not want the cats or kittens killed," Commissioner Suzanne Boisvenue said. The city earlier this year had arranged for animal control workers to pick up the trapped cats. The trappings were halted in August, after a City Hall employee sent an e-mail urging commissioners to save the cats. The employee wrote the cats had been crying because they weren't being fed at Public Works, a utility site in an industrial area with plenty of machinery and Dumpsters. Workers had been ordered to stop feeding the cats in hopes they would move to another food source.

-ASK AMY
DEAR AMY: I am a 45-year-old man, own my own business, sit on the boards of several charities, and enjoy sports and travel. I am also gay, and I have been in a committed relationship for more than seven years. All of my friends, associates and family know about my personal life, with one glaring exception: my mother. She is a healthy, vibrant woman who will turn 78 next year. She is a widow, in great health and has plenty of money. We have traveled together, and I spend all my holidays with her, my sister and my sister's family. I am being terribly unfair to my partner who is being excluded from my family. More important, I am not being honest with my mother. This is the only aspect of my life that is making me truly unhappy. My sister said the time has come for me to sit down and tell our mother the facts of my life. But I am afraid of letting my mother down. I have rationalized this for years by saying that she would not understand because of her religious upbringing. My mother is not living in a cave. She has had many interactions with other gay people (including some of my friends) with traces of disapproval. I cannot imagine why she doesn't ask me to my face why I am not married at my age or have never had a relationship with a woman since college. Do I sit her down and tell her the truth? Or do I let her go to her grave without my "coming out" and confirming any suspicions she may have? -- Out, But Not Out
DEAR OUT: Your mother might not be asking you pointed questions about your life because she is wondering why her middle-age gay son chooses to be in the closet. She may wonder if you are ashamed of your orientation. Or she's a little dense and hasn't put all of the pieces together. You need to tell your mother about yourself and give her the opportunity to share your life. To not do so (for whatever reason) is just a little bit selfish. To put the burden on her to pry this information out of you is just a little bit cowardly. You say that this is the only thing in your life making your unhappy. You can fix this by choosing to be authentic. When you do, you'll feel much better. You can offer your mother support through the organization PFLAG. Its Web site (pflag.org) contains information that might help both of you.

-Politics, Equity and Meeting Boycotts
To those who favor gay marriage rights, the site of the American Political Science Association's meeting this year couldn't have been better. The association is meeting this week in Boston, where gay marriage is permitted. But for many gay academics, the association's plan to hold its 2012 meeting in New Orleans couldn't be worse. That's because Louisiana has passed one of the most restrictive bans on gay marriage in the country -- a measure that prohibits not only gay marriage, but recognition of any equivalent relationship. As a result, gay academics say that in event of illness or accident in New Orleans, their partners could be denied access to them in hospitals. And that means some gay academics will skip the meeting.

Troopergate. It's a political he-said, she-said that has dogged Alaska Gov. -This Isn't the Return of History
The Georgia attack will go down not as the dawn of a new era of Russian power but as a major strategic blunder. Many in Washington have described Russia's attack on Georgia as a turning point in international affairs. Pundits thunder that we are returning to an age of great-power conflicts. Globalization and integration have been exposed as shams. Russia is playing this new Great Game with ruthless brilliance and we-the United States and Europe-are foundering. As events unfold, however, almost all of this instant analysis will prove sensationalist, misguided and incorrect. It's certainly true that today's world is characterized by the emergence of new powers like China, Russia and India (a phenomenon I have termed "the rise of the rest"). This is not a contradiction of globalization but a consequence of it. Economic growth is producing new centers of influence. And that's leading to greater national pride, confidence and assertiveness. But there are also powerful new countervailing forces-yes, of globalization and integration-that are working to mitigate nationalism and unilateralism.

-The McCain Paradox
Americans know the man better than they understand where he would lead the country. LAST WEEK, the Democrats faced the task of presenting a relative newcomer to politics as their nominee for president. This week, the Republicans face a different challenge, one greatly complicated now by the anticipated arrival of Hurricane Gustav on the Gulf Coast. After a long career of public service, and on his second presidential campaign, John McCain is a familiar figure to many Americans. But where he would lead the nation is less clear to many, and his vice presidential selection last week didn't help. Out of respect for potential hurricane victims in Mississippi, Louisiana or Texas, Republicans may nominate Mr. McCain without the usual fanfare of a party convention -- and without nearly as much public attention as Barack Obama attracted last week. That only heightens the difficulty of the task Mr. McCain faces: to offer a vivid picture of why he wants to be president and what he would hope to accomplish.
