GOVERNOR'S RACE
Promised tax cuts are a bit of a stretch

Governor candidates Charlie Crist and Jim Davis are proposing ambitiousproperty-tax cuts, but they would face some hefty political hurdles ingetting them passed.

BY MARY ELLEN KLAS
meklas@MiamiHerald.com

TALLAHASSEE - Democrat Jim Davis says he'll cut $1 billion in property taxesnext year by making the state shoulder a larger share of school funding.Republican Charlie Crist wants to double the homestead exemption forhomeowners in 2009 and claims it could save taxpayers $2 billion.

These are the promises voters will hear from the two candidates for governorover the next five weeks as they present their sound-bite-ready pledges toroll back taxes in TV ads and campaign speeches.

What they don't explain is that each of their proposals depends onovercoming major political obstacles -- which are not so made-for-TV.

Pasco nudists recall 'hypocritical' campaign

By STEVE BOUSQUET
Published October 3, 2006

TALLAHASSEE - Three years ago, U.S. Rep. Mark Foley demanded that the state investigate a summer nudist camp for kids in Pasco County, warning it couldexpose innocent children to pedophiles.

After reading a news item about the camp in the New York Times, Foley, aU.S. Senate candidate at the time, sent letters to Gov. Jeb Bush andAttorney General Charlie Crist in 2003.

"The situation clearly raises legitimate issues that should be addressed, given that it involves minor children," Foley wrote, citing his post asco-chairman of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus.

Foley compared the camps to child pornography and child modeling Web sitesand wrote: "I believe they may be endangering these children."

Recent revelations of Foley's sexually explicit e-mails to underage malepages on Capitol Hill carries a special resonance with the nudists who sayFoley maligned them as child pornographers.

Foley: I was molested
By Brian E. Crowley
Palm Beach Post Political Editor
Wednesday, October 04, 2006

WEST PALM BEACH - Former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley says a clergyman molested himwhen he was a teenager in the 1960s.

Foley made the announcement Tuesday through his attorney, David Roth, whoalso said Foley "wants you to know that he is a gay man." It was the firsttime in nearly 30 years of public life that Foley has declared openly thathe is gay.

The twin announcements, made outside the West Palm Beach Library, startedanother jarring chapter in a saga that began Friday when Foley was forced toresign from Congress in disgrace because of sexually explicit instantmessages he exchanged with teenage boys who had worked as congressionalpages.

The alleged molestation of Foley took place between the ages of 13 and 15,said Roth, who did not name the clergyman, the denomination or where thesexual contacts took place.

Roth said Foley wants to release those details but was advised not to do sountil he completes treatment for alcoholism and mental illness at anundisclosed substance abuse center.

Beyond FCAT

Jim Davis has some sensible ideas for evaluating Florida's schools.

A Times Editorial
Published October 4, 2006

In his "Achieve Florida" education plan, Democratic gubernatorial nomineeJim Davis doesn't aim to end standardized testing or abandon rating schools.Instead, he makes a reasonable call for better feedback to students and amore thorough way to hold schools accountable.

That such modest improvements are viewed as anathema to the Department ofEducation shows just how deeply politicized school reform has become. Gov.Jeb Bush, as if on cue, responded with extravagant umbrage: "CongressmanDavis would prefer not to hold our schools accountable for studentachievement and would rather sugarcoat their performance."

That isn't close to the truth. What Davis is actually seeking is to bringsome precision to a system that uses the FloridaComprehensive Assessment Test as though it can provide all the answers.

KEECHL PICKS UP KEY ENDORSEMENTS

SEIU, NWPC Support Change for District 4 Commission Seat

Fort Lauderdale - Democratic Broward County Commission candidate Ken Keechl picked up two key endorsements in his hard-charging campaign against incumbent Commissioner Jim Scott: Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 11, and the National Women's Political Caucus (Gwen Cherry Chapter - Broward County).

"I'm pleased to accept the endorsement of these key organizations, which each speak for historically underrepresented communities," Keechl said. "Unionized workers and women are having a tougher time finding affordable housing, paying their rising property taxes, and affording hurricane insurance due to the budgetary decisions made by the Broward County Commission. I'll be a watchdog for their hard-earned tax dollars."

Service Employees International Union is the largest and fastest growing union in North America, focused on uniting workers in key service sectors to improve their lives and the services they provide. SEIU is the nation's most diverse union: 56 percent of SEIU members are women, and more than 40 percent are people of color.

"Workers are having a tough time because of the lethal combination of low wages, rising property taxes, and increasing insurance costs," said Hiram Ruiz, deputy director of SEIU Local 11. "Our members want Broward's government to practice the fiscal discipline they have to follow everyday."

National Women's Political Caucus was formed to increase women's participation in the political process, to win equality for women, and to support candidates who support their goals. Among NWPC's priorities is protecting reproductive freedoms. The Gwen Cherry Chapter of NWPC rarely endorses male candidates, although it often "recommends" them.

"We decided Ken Keechl's election was worth a change in the rules," said Patti Lynn, president of the Gwen Cherry Chapter of NWPC. "The Commission is out of touch with what's happening to the people of Broward County. It's time for a change."

Ken Keechl supports lower property taxes, putting the brakes on overspending by Broward's elected officials, slowing down the burgeoning development in the County, and preserving our disappearing green spaces. For more information about Ken, check out www.keechl2006.com.
