Tea-Party Activists Complicate Republican Comeback Strategy
By NAFTALI BENDAVID
The rise of conservative "tea party" activists around the country has created a dilemma for Republicans. They are breathing life into the party's quest to regain power. But they're also waging war on some candidates hand-picked by GOP leaders as the most likely to win.

Gay veterans tackle "don't ask, don't tell"

At age 20, Mark LaFontaine found himself in the western Pacific as a seaman apprentice aboard the Coast Guard cutter Basswood. And then his shipmates figured out he was gay. LaFontaine said he was discharged after a months-long journey through the military justice system.

Let policy stand
What is President Obama going to change about the policy regarding gays and lesbians in the military? They are allowed to serve as long as they follow the rules. President Clinton did the right thing by ordering ``don't ask-don't tell.'' They can serve in the military as long as they don't advertise their sexual orientation.
So what do gays and lesbians want? And what is Obama going to give them?

Don't ask, tell or legitimize
BY CAL THOMAS
tmseditors@tribune.com
I am sympathetic to the story told by Joseph Rocha, who claims in a Washington Post opinion column that he was discharged from the Navy because he is gay, though he says he never told anyone. Rocha says his male colleagues concluded he was gay when he wouldn't laugh at their dirty jokes about women or visit prostitutes with them.

Judgmental kin stymie gay couple's family plan
By SHIRLEY C. MALOVE
Q: My partner, Jason, and I were foster fathers to Juan, who unfortunately got into trouble, was diagnosed with schizophrenia and placed in a residential setting. The adoption never happened. Now Jason's sister (with addiction problems) is pregnant and wants us to raise the baby. I know my family will be very negative. They considered Juan ``damaged goods'' and will see this baby similarly. Any suggestions?
A: It is commendable that you and Jason opened your hearts and home to a child in the foster care system. Intending to adopt Juan demonstrated your heartfelt dedication to parenthood. The unfortunate turn of events must have been terribly disappointing for everyone.

What’s the Story, John Stamos?
Former Full House star and Advocate coverboy John Stamos puts on a happy face for the Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie and gives the word, hummingbird, on his gay fans and gay icon girlfriends.
By Brandon Voss
When John Stamos suited up for the cover of The Advocate in 2006, he was playing doctor on ER and promoting his role as a gay wedding planner striking for marriage equality rights in the A&E original movie Wedding Wars. The former General Hospital heartthrob best known as Uncle Jesse on the hit family sitcom Full House is now performing to full houses as mama’s boy Albert Peterson in the first Broadway revival of the Tony-winning 1960 musical Bye Bye Birdie, which opened October 15 at Henry Miller’s Theatre. The eternally youthful 46-year-old called Advocate.com to confess his campy obsession with Birdie costar Gina Gershon and the boozy truth behind that now-infamous Australian morning show interview.

A note from Ray - unrelated to GLBT: I have had an awful experience with my Chase BP credit card. I won't go into the details here, but Chase BP does not abide by their stated promo offers regarding interest charges. I have never had a problem with a credit card company. But, my experience with Chase is disgusting. My advice - DON'T USE CHASE CREDIT CARDS!!!!

In New Orleans, Obama Fires Back At Critics
By REUTERS
U.S. President Barack Obama fired back on Thursday at critics who say he has few accomplishments of note in his nine months in office and declared he was just getting started. In recent weeks, Obama has faced criticism both from liberals who want him to do more to advance causes such as gay rights, and conservatives who accuse him of taking too long to decide whether to send more U.S. troops to Afghanistan.

53 Republicans Seek Ouster of Obama Schools Official

People for the American Way
Kevin Jennings under attack: Tell the White House: Don't Be Bullied!
Right-wing media personalities and members of Congress have been bullying both the White House and the Democratic congressional leadership into inaction and, in some cases, submission. The only way to deal with bullies is to stand up to them. And it's fitting that the latest bullying is around the person in charge of keeping schools safe: Kevin Jennings, who heads the Department of Education's Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools.
Jennings has been targeted since he was appointed. First, it was by the Religious Right (spearheaded by the Family Research Council) who continues to oppose Jennings' position based on his sexual orientation and his role with GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) in helping to ensure that all students are safe in school, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. Now, Sean Hannity and others smell blood in the water after Van Jones was forced to step down from his role leading the charge to create green jobs because of pressure from demagogues like Glenn Beck. The Right's attacks on Jennings have been thoroughly debunked. But, of course, lies are not a new weapon in the Right’s arsenal. A wave of NeoMcCarthyism is sweeping Washington with the Far Right targeting Obama administration officials and others with witch hunts. The broad goals are to obstruct progress and damage President Obama politically via "guilt by association." The President must call their bluff and stand up to these people. Call the White House now to help firm up the administration's backbone and shore up its support for Kevin Jennings. White House: 202-456-1111

By Ed O'Keefe
Remember when President Obama said he wanted to make working for the federal government "cool again"? Standing Up for Gay Rights
In 1989, as commanding officer of a Navy carrier-based squadron, I used my authority to block attempts by my executive officer to demean and prosecute a man because he thought the sailor was gay. I would not allow such harassment. The sailor in question had an outstanding performance record and was serving his country with honor. What possible difference did it make whom he loved? It's time for the people of this country to show some courage in the face of the bigots who would shame, condemn, abuse or demean gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender citizens. As Americans, we are all pledged to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Accordingly we are legally and morally bound to enact legislation that ensures the law shall be applied equally to all of us, regardless of our differences and especially if those differences incite prejudice in others. Anything less is gay-bashing. I hope the citizens of this country do not continue to dishonor my military service by continuing to permit gay-bashing.

Jason Ricci is much more than blues
By Deborah Ramirez
Jason Ricci is one of the best blues harmonica players of his generation. He's seen the awards, and the hard times, including a stretch in a drug detention center in Delray Beach. But traditionalists beware. Onstage, where you'll find Ricci on Sunday with his band New Blood at the eighth annual Hollywood Beach Clambake, he may be sporting orange hair, worn in punky spikes, along with skin-tight clothes and heavy-metal accessories. He's openly gay in a rather macho genre and defiant about stereotypes, musical and otherwise.

As the Republican Party continues its pilgrimage through the desert, its leaders may be missing the oasis for the vale of tears. Wilton Manors: Halloween: the new ‘GLBT Pride’ for SoFla
Why Wicked Manors means more than just dressing up
By DAN RENZI
What are your plans for Halloween? It’s a big deal in South Florida. I am among the gay men in America who have informally adopted Halloween as our own Pride celebration. Like “gay pride,” Halloween is a chance to liberate oneself, come out of the closet as the naughty nurse or dominatrix you want to be, and march through the streets just to make everyone appreciate how great you are. Slutty costume? I will squeeze into it somehow, with pride, showing off myself in embarrassing ways I wouldn’t otherwise dream of while in my own home with the curtains closed. (I have a good one this year, but I’m not telling yet.)

TX: Ordained, Gay, and Black
TOM HOLMES \ Contributing Reporter \ Austin Weekly News
On the book at issue in the recent Buzz Café cancellation, the Rev. Benjamin Reynolds has a particularly informed take. He is a gay black man who, as a pastor, has paid the price of coming out. This spring, he arrived as transitional pastor at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Oak Park. Three years ago, in Colorado, the congregation he grew up in dismissed him when he spoke up about his sexual orientation. Cornelius Williams’ book Transition: From Homosexual to Preacher concerns Reynolds. Regarding his personal struggle, “ex-gay” isn’t an option. Reynolds says some religions that condemn gay people do so largely on the basis of a literal reading of the Bible. Similar methods of interpretation, he noted, have even justified slavery and oppressing women’s rights.

A note from Ray - unrelated to GLBT: I have had an awful experience with my Chase BP credit card. I won't go into the details (unless you individually ask me), but Chase BP does not abide by their stated promo offers regarding interest charges. I have never had a problem with a credit card company. But, my experience with Chase is disgusting. My advice - DON'T USE CHASE CREDIT CARDS!!!!

HRC President Joe Solmonese: ‘The last thing we should do is wait’
From HRC’s Back Story blog:
The following post is from HRC President Joe Solmonese:
Between President Obama’s speech at the HRC National Dinner on Saturday night and the inspiring crowd of pro-equality marchers who gathered at the Capitol on Sunday, it was quite a weekend. In my mind, it all reflected the undeniable fact that we in the LGBT community and our allies have a new-found energy and focus on what needs to be done to achieve the equality we’ve been promised and that we deserve. Of course, we are not a community that sees everything through the same lens (and thank goodness for that!), so there have been nearly as many different views of what really went down this weekend as there were people marching past the White House. With this in mind, I want to address some of the issues people have been discussing and talk about how I see us all moving forward.

Iranian Queer Railroad
On October 6, 2009, Rahim Mohammadi was executed in Tabriz, a city in northwest Iran, after being convicted of sexual abuse and rape during sexual relations between males (a homosexual act called Lavat). According to Rahim’s lawyer, Mr. Mohammad Mostafayi, there was not enough evidence presented to the court to prove such accusations; the court nevertheless decided that once a person is convicted of Lavat, he must be executed. Mostafayi, who had not been informed of the court’s decision once it was handed down - and was only contacted after his client Rahim had been executed - wrote a letter of further explanation to the authorities. Liberal Lament
By Howard Kurtz
I'll get to the big Senate Finance Committee vote -- Snowe in October! -- but first I want to spotlight a slam at the administration, from the left. The president has been having some problems on his liberal flank, which were underscored by last weekend's gay rights protest and the complaints that Obama still won't give a timetable for dumping don't-ask-don't-tell. You see it in health care, too, where some on the left still want single-payer and believe the Democrats have compromised too much with a GOP opposition that has no interest in backing reform.

We do not agree on what should come first marriage rights or employment rights. We do not even seem to agree on whether or not to have nights where we all just gather in one place and socialize.

Congress: The Overlooked Player in the Battle for Equality
Bridgette P. LaVictoire \ Lez Get Real
President Barack Obama is not the Dictator in Chief no matter how much people would like him to be. He cannot wave a wand and repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell or the Defense of Marriage Act without Congress passing new laws. It is unfortunate, and a point often overlooked. That said, there certainly is a lot more that President Obama can do including lobbying Congress to get these laws pushed through faster while other pieces of legislation are worked on. Jon Stewart is certainly correct on that point. DADT and DOMA are small compared to winning a century’s long battle for healthcare equality.

As we reported earlier, the October financial statements are in for the Maine campaigns for Question 1, and the “No” side to preserve marriage equality is doing quite will in fundraising. They’ve raised about $2.7 million as of the first of October. Meanwhile, the “yes side who is trying to overturn Maine’s same-sex law had raised only $1.1 million. But because opinion polls show that Maine voters are evenly split on Question 1, Stand for Marriage Maine brags that “Mainers won’t be bought.”

Obama: Homosexual Relationships ‘Just as Real and Admirable’ as Heterosexual Marriage
Pete Winn, Senior Writer/Editor \ CNSNews
President Obama delivered an unprecedented message to the Human Rights Campaign Saturday night. Sounding more like a homosexual activist than a sitting president, Obama went well beyond his expected message of “I’m here with you” on the homosexual agenda. “My expectation is that when you look back on these years, you will see a time in which we put a stop to discrimination against gays and lesbians — whether in the office or on the battlefield,” Obama told an estimated audience of 3,000. “You will see a time in which we as a nation finally recognize relationships between two men or two women as just as real and admirable as relationships between a man and a woman.”

Faiz Shakir, Amanda Terkel, Matt Corley, Benjamin Armbruster, and Zaid Jilani \ Progress Report \ Think Progress
As the Obama administration and congressional leadership push forward on health care, the fiscal stimulus, and the war in Afghanistan, many of their supporters are becoming frustrated that there hasn’t been more aggressive movement on one of Obama’s other campaign promises: equal rights for gays and lesbians, particularly on the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT). On Sunday, tens of thousands of people marched on the nation’s capital and demanded progress. The National Equality March coincided with National Coming Out Day and featured speeches by NAACP Chairman Julian Bond and Judy Shepard, whose son, Matthew, was brutally killed in 1998 because of his sexual orientation. The march came one day after LGBT advocates warmly welcomed President Obama at the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) annual dinner, where he acknowledged frustrations at the pace of progress but promised to keep pushing for equal rights. “I’m here with a simple message: I’m here with you in that fight,” Obama said to rousing applause, adding, “[I]t’s not for me to tell you to be patient, any more than it was for others to counsel patience to African Americans petitioning for equal rights half a century ago. But I will say this: We have made progress and we will make more.”

California: Breakaway Church Gives Up Property
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
A conservative Los Angeles-area church that broke away from the Episcopal Church over theological differences and the consecration of a gay bishop is giving up its property. St. Luke’s Anglican Church in La Crescenta is being returned to the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. A judge ordered the move, and the state’s Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal. The congregation voted to leave the national church three years ago. The diocese sued to retain the property. The congregation has rented a chapel in Glendale and joined the new Anglican Church in North America, which was founded last year by breakaway Episcopal parishes.

For a Gay Couple, the Cost of Heartbreak
To the Editor:
Re “The Costs of Being a Gay Couple Run Higher” (“Your Money” column, by Tara Siegel Bernard and Ron Lieber, front page, Oct. 3):
As your article illustrates, marriage in America is a complex legal contract that bestows rights and responsibilities at both state and federal levels of government. Thank you for taking this debate out of the religious and into the practical. My Indian partner’s application for a new American visa was denied last month. She left the country last week, exiled from her job and our life, because same-sex state marriages are not eligible for federally administered immigration benefits. Infuriatingly, our marriage could disqualify my partner from getting a tourist, student or other nonimmigrant visa. This year, being gay has cost us $6,020 in legal fees and a one-way ticket to South Asia, not to mention heartbreak and unemployment. We should be spending this money on a wedding.

30 Years of Living With AIDS
Thank you for "7,000 Gay Men Help Study AIDS" [Sept. 29]. I have been a participant at the site in Pittsburgh since the pilot study in 1982. I was told I had the virus after the test was developed that tells whether a participant's blood sample is HIV-positive. That test was developed in 1985, and doctors thought I was probably infected at least as early as 1980. I've seen an entire generation of men killed by this virus and I was described as an anomaly. I should have died long ago, but with all the new treatments, I'm 71 and this is my 30th year living with HIV/AIDS. I belong to a survivors group that meets monthly; there are only two other men who have lived two decades or more after being diagnosed as HIV-positive. We all continue to participate in the study, hoping that perhaps we can help people live for many more years with this disease.

Leadership on Gay Rights
President Obama isn't the only one falling short.
FULL EQUALITY for gays and lesbians is the civil rights issue of our time. Men and women who want to preserve and protect the ideals of this nation are being booted from the military because of who they are. Same-sex couples who seek the recognition of their relationships that their heterosexual counterparts take for granted are denied the rights and responsibilities that come from civil marriage. Ending these and other forms of institutional discrimination based on sexual orientation requires leadership. Pity there's not enough of it coming from either end of Pennsylvania Avenue.

The Early Word: A Working Holiday
By Janie Lorber
Don’t Ask Don’t Tell: Mr. Obama reiterated Saturday night his commitment to ending Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the 1993 policy that bars gays from serving openly in the military. So, why can’t he make it happen, gay rights activists ask. Congress would need to pass a bill in order to overturn the policy. And, while a growing number of Democrats, including Representative Joe Sestak, a war veteran, and Senator Carl Levin, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, are calling for a repeal, Mr. Obama would have to throw his weight behind such a measure. At a time when the administration is pulling out all the stops to pass a health care bill, it doesn’t seem willing to alienate crucial votes by pushing another divisive issue.

Senate Armed Service Committee Chairman Carl Levin said the British and other Western armies have ended such discrimination and that it would be "great progress" for the United States to do it as well.

Her name was on everyone's lips for a solid 48 hours. A movement is genuflecting.
