In Praise of Shopkeepers
It takes courage these days to start a useful business.
By JOSEPH EPSTEIN
Within three blocks of my apartment in Evanston, Ill., are 21 restaurants, six coffee shops, five manicurist-pedicurists, four cellphone purveyors, three dry cleaners, two quite good libraries, one multiplex theater, and (not a partridge in a pear tree) a paucity of interesting and useful shops. Shops we do have, but they are preponderantly corporate-owned: Design Within Reach, Joseph A. Bank, North Face, Athletica, LA Fitness. Lacking are the odd shops, the curiosity shops (to use the Charles Dickens' title), whose character and contents might pleasantly surprise a passing pedestrian.

Lawmakers Raise Concerns About Locker Rooms at Trans Rights Hearing
Ethan Jacobs
During a Judiciary Committee hearing on the transgender rights bill July 14 some members of the committee indicated that they had concerns about the bill, particularly about its impact on bathroom and locker room facilities. In the weeks leading up to the hearing opponents of the bill, led by the conservative Christian advocacy group Massachusetts Family Institute (MFI), had waged a media and lobbying campaign to brand the legislation, House Bill 1728, as “the bathroom bill,” claiming that it would enable sexual predators to dress as women and enter women’s bathroom and locker room facilities. Only one committee member, Rep. Colleen Garry (D-Dracut), raised that scenario as a serious concern during the hearing, but other committee members, including House committee chair Rep. Eugene O’Flaherty (D-Chelsea), said they believed the bill might threaten the rights to privacy and modesty of non-transgender people using locker room and bathroom facilities. H.B. 1728 would amend the state’s non-discrimination and hate crimes laws to make them transgender-inclusive. Read more

Horserace to equality:
Federal marriage lawsuits
Lisa Keen | contributing writer | Bay Windows
A year ago, theare were no lawsuits in federal court seeking to establish equal rights for gay couples in marriage licensing. Now there are five.
These five are not equally matched horses heading for the same finish line. Two of the cases challenge one aspect of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), while the other three seek to strike down statewide bans on gay marriage, arguing they violate the U.S. Constitution.
An enormously successful gay litigation group is waging one lawsuit on behalf of multiple plaintiffs. A recent law school graduate has mounted another lawsuit on behalf of himself and his 18-year-old fiancé. Read more

DEAR AMY: I am 44, and my daughter is 23.
She is gay, and I have treated her and her partner the same way I treat my son and daughter-in-law. Everyone acknowledges this. I respect their commitment to each other and am joyful that they are very happy. However, I cannot accept the fact that she just got "married." She has now informed me that she needs to terminate her relationship with me because I will not accept her marriage. She is aware of my position on gay marriage. The suggestion to agree to disagree is not an option.
What say you? -- Wondering
DEAR WONDERING: Many parents would be delighted for their kids to choose marriage. A wise parent knows that forcing offspring to choose between them and a romantic relationship often results in the younger person choosing the latter. Your daughter knew the risks she was running in terms of her relationship with you when she and her partner chose to marry. She did it anyway. You may assume that she is as stubborn as you are. Because you rule out the option of "agreeing to disagree," you really left your daughter no option but to terminate the relationship.I can only urge you to try harder to find a way to reconcile. If your daughter chooses to have children, you might want to have a relationship with them.

"The Man in the Mirror"
Chris Hedges | TruthDig.com
In celebrity culture we destroy what we worship. The commercial exploitation of Michael Jackson's death was orchestrated by the corporate forces that rendered Jackson insane. Jackson, robbed of his childhood and surrounded by vultures that preyed on his fears and weaknesses, was so consumed by self-loathing he carved his African-American face into an ever-changing Caucasian death mask and hid his apparent pedophilia behind a Peter Pan illusion of eternal childhood. He could not disentangle his public and his private self. He became a commodity, a product, one to be sold, used and manipulated. He was infected by the moral nihilism and personal disintegration that are at the core of our corporate culture. And his fantasies of eternal youth, delusions of majesty, and desperate, disfiguring quests for physical transformation were expressions of our own yearning. He was a reflection of us in the extreme.

‘Hair’ to Go Dark for a Day So Cast Can March for Gay Marriage Rights
By Patrick Healy
In an unusual move for a Broadway show, the producers of the musical “Hair” announced on Monday that they were canceling the Sunday matinee on Oct. 11 so that the cast could join the National Equality March that day in Washington in support of gay-marriage rights. Oskar Eustis, the artistic director of the Public Theater, a producer of “Hair,” said that the decision reflected the spirit of the musical. “Its message of change and hope and inclusion is one we try to live, not just preach,” he said in a statement. The announcement was to be made at a rally in Los Angeles after the “Hair” cast taped a segment there for “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” Monday. A spokesman for “Hair” said the producers were adding a performance for Monday, Oct. 5. People who have tickets to the Oct. 11 matinee can exchange them for another performance.

In opening yesterday's Judiciary Committee hearings on Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court, Chairman Pat Leahy (D., Vt.) alluded to the religious prejudice that has too often intruded on the process. The first Jewish nominee, he noted, had to answer "questions about the Jewish mind and how its operations are complicated by altruism." Gays have been serving openly in Britain since 2000
LONDON (AP)
For more than a decade, he had prepared for that moment. Lt. Cmdr. Craig Jones climbed the staircase into the captain's cabin, with its porthole overlooking the sea and its matched pictures of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. The captain paused in a conversation with his executive officer and took a seat. Jones looked him in the eye and told him he would never again listen to the captain bash gay servicemen.

Many of us have been closely watching our Democratic administration and Congress to see if they intend to live up to the promises they made on the campaign trail to advance pro-equality legislation this year. Four Reasons for Hope on LGBT Rights and the Obama Administration
Carlos A. Ball | Huffington Post
OK, so you voted for Obama, and you are a big LGBT rights supporter, and you are starting to despair because he has yet to push for the repeal of either DOMA or the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. And to make matters worse, you’ve heard that his Department of Justice filed a brief in a case challenging the constitutionality of DOMA in which it argued that the law is clearly constitutional. The Administration has been hit hard, and rightfully so, on all of these points by LGBT leaders and by the gay blogosphere. But I, for one, do not want to completely lose the sense of optimism that I felt just a few months ago when Obama replaced what was without a doubt the worst and most incompetent administration since that of Herbert Hoover’s. I want to find reasons to still believe that the Obama Administration will do the right thing for LGBT people, and do it relatively soon. Below are four “signs of hope” (and perhaps you can think of more). Please understand that I am not suggesting that these small steps justify the Administration’s refusal so far to push for the repeal of DOMA and of the military’s blatantly discriminatory policy. All I am saying is that these are silver linings of sorts which suggest that perhaps better things are on the way when it comes to how the Administration will handle some of the most important civil rights issues of our time. Drivers' Alcohol Use Down, Study Finds
Steady Decline Seen Since 1973
KEN THOMAS, Associated Press Writer
The number of drunken drivers on the roads has fallen sharply during the past 30 years amid tougher laws, stiffer enforcement and a shift in societal views on alcohol, a government survey found Monday. A roadside survey released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that 2.2 percent of drivers had blood-alcohol levels of 0.08 or higher in 2007. The results represented a steady decline compared with studies conducted since 1973, when 7.5 percent of the drivers surveyed were legally intoxicated.

Can David Cameron Redefine Britain’s Tory Party?
By CHRISTOPHER CALDWELL
David Cameron was on his way from London to Croydon in a second-class train car last October when a middle-aged man across the aisle interrupted him and started telling an obscene joke. Cameron, the 42-year-old leader of Britain’s Conservatives, had been discussing his first clear political memory — the May 1979 trial of the head of the Liberal Party, Jeremy Thorpe, a closeted homosexual, for conspiring with a nightclub owner to murder his sometime lover, Norman Scott. That trial, which began the same week as the elections that brought Margaret Thatcher to power, remains a symbol, to a certain sort of Englishman, of the societywide breakdown of the 1970s, which was a decade of currency devaluations, crippling strikes, uncollected garbage and shortened workweeks. The eavesdropper across the aisle said with a smirk that he would vote for Cameron if Cameron could tell him how you fit four Liberals on a bar stool.

OK: Kerns Blames It on the Gays
David Taffet | Staff Writer | Dallas Voice
Oklahoma state Rep. Sally Kern, who made headlines last year when anti-gay comments she made at a Republican fundraiser were secretly taped and then posted online, is back in the news after she issued her “Oklahoma Citizen’s Proclamation for Morality” before the July 4 weekend. The proclamation blames the country’s current financial woes on a list of moral failings, including same-sex marriage and divorce along with pornography, sex trafficking, child abuse and “many other forms of debauchery.”
Last year, the Republican from Oklahoma City made national news when she called homosexuality more dangerous than terrorism.
“I honestly think it’s the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam, which I think is a big threat,” Kern said last year. Read more

Gay Group Ladlad Seeks Comelec Accreditation
DJ Yap | Philippine Daily Inquirer
MANILA, Philippines—Ladlad, a party-list organization representing homosexual men and women, expressed optimism Wednesday that it would finally be accredited by the Commission on Elections for the 2010 polls.
Ateneo de Manila University professor and Ladlad leader Danton Remoto said the Comelec had assured the group that it would be accredited as a party-list group provided it could prove a national membership.
Remoto said the group now has 22,000 registered members and 10 regional chapters.
In the 2007 elections, the organization was rejected by the poll body on the ground that it did not represent a “marginalized and underprivileged” sector as required by election laws, Remoto said. Read more
