JAY FISETTE
Vice Chair, Arlington County Board
As governor, will you support and sign legislation to ban workplace discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) public employees, a protection now contained only in an executive order, and will you support health insurance benefits for "other qualified adults" who share a home with a state employee, as many of Virginia's top private employers offer today?
In the past, both candidates have made statements about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Virginians that they now say they regret. Both now say they oppose discrimination based on sexual orientation. One of these men will soon oversee our state workforce as governor -- with the power to move from words to action.
As attorney general, Robert McDonnell declared that the governor did not have the power by executive order to end discrimination based on sexual orientation in state employment. But he also opined that a state agency (the University of Virginia) did have the authority to offer benefits to other adults living in state employee households. Ninety percent of Virginians support the right of GLBT people to work for our state government without discrimination. Almost two-thirds support the right of GLBT employees to share benefits with their partners. GLBT Virginians and their friends and families deserve to know what our next governor will do.

'Angels in America'
Fabled Gay Epic Finds New Wings

Sunday, September 13, 2009
For sure, as a theater critic, you have a soft spot for the little guy, especially when he's swinging for the fences. So I've reserved the absolutely tenderest place this season for Forum Theatre, which is taking on a monster of a project: a revival of all seven hours of Tony Kushner's sprawling drama "Angels in America."

GAY IN MIAMI: We're off to a `warmer' place

Your blues, author BeBe Moore Campbell famously wrote, ain’t like mine.
I’ve occasionally borrowed that phrase to explain how bigotry as experienced by majority and minority is not the same: the one has access to levers of power enabling it to express its hatred in public policy, the other has access only to fists and words. But there are times that observation is simultaneously true, and irrelevant. This is one of them.

Britain Apologizes to Gay Codebreaker Alan Turing
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LONDON (AP) -- British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has apologized for the ''inhumane'' treatment of World War II code-breaker Alan Turing. The mathematician Turing helped crack Nazi Germany's Enigma communications code -- a turning point in the war. But he was later convicted of gross indecency for having sex with a man and forcibly treated with female hormones to reduce his sex drive. Homosexuality was then illegal in Britain.

Back to Laramie
Eleven years after Matthew Shepard’s murder, the creators of The Laramie Project take a look at everything that’s happened in the town since in a new play that will premiere in more than a hundred theaters worldwide on the same night.
By Bruce Shenitz
At first it sounded like the premise for a bizarro-world reality show: Nine New York City actors, several of them gay, journey to Laramie, Wyo., just five weeks after the most notorious antigay crime in memory, the murder of Matthew Shepard. Their goal was to interview townspeople and write a play about the events of that October 1998. Two hundred interviews and a year and a half later, those accounts were melded to create The Laramie Project, “a play that portrays a town in turmoil,” says MoisĂ©s Kaufman, founder and artistic director of Tectonic Theater Project, the company that created the play.

Gay Latino Americans are 'coming of age'
By John Blake
Perez Hilton is a celebrity blogger who dishes out the latest Hollywood gossip, but there's something about his personal life you may not know. Hilton is a Latino pioneer. He is one of the first Latino public figures in the U.S. to be openly gay. While Latinos have broken ground on the U.S. Supreme Court, in Hollywood and in professional sports, gay Latinos in the nation's public arena remain largely invisible.

Archerd’s wife, Selma, said he died Tuesday at UCLA Medical Center of mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs strongly tied to asbestos exposure. She said the cancer was the result of his time spent in shipyards while serving in the Navy during World War II. She said he had become very ill over the last two years, especially in the last two weeks.

Cancel Buju Banton Website Launched
To Counter Misinformation from His Promoters
It was a short-lived victory for gay rights groups a few weeks ago after concert promoters AEG Live & Live Nation canceled several concerts in large cities by Buju Banton, a performer who gruesomely calls for killing gays in the lyrics of his most well-known song, “Boom Bye Bye.” Some mainstream media outlets wrongly reported that the entire tour was canceled. But Banton’s Gargamel label recently announced that the tour was on with more than 30 cities booked. His MySpace Music page lists canceled shows as TBD, indicating he’s seeking out other venues. In Philadelphia , the first city in the tour, the concert was initially canceled, but then the promoter and venue agreed to have the show anyway. To counter the tour, San Diego gay rights activist Syd Stevens launched http://cancelbujubanton.wetpaint.com/ over the Labor Day weekend. The site not only gives updated information about the tour and how to contact concert venues to protest, it also aims to counter myths peddled by Banton’s business allies.

Young, Gifted and Intensely Anti-Abortion
Bill Berkowitz | Buzz Flash
Ignacio Reyes and David Schmidt have the look of a boy band; they’re young and flashy, earnest and media-savvy. As leaders of the group Live Action, they’re committed to organizing a corps of young anti-abortion activists. During a town hall meeting hosted by Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), a neatly attired young man rose to ask the congresswoman a question. He identified himself as Ignacio Reyes and he asked Lofgren: “We know that over 90 percent of abortions are purely elective, not medically necessary. Why is this being covered when abortion is not clearly health care?” The question — a fair one, and asked politely — was greeted by a round of applause and cheers from some members of the audience. “Abortion will be covered as a benefit by one or more of the healthcare plans available to Americans, and I think it should be,” Lofgren responded.

A Catholic View Of Gay Marriage
As one of the 580,000 Catholics in the Washington Archdiocese, I object to the suggestion by Ronald Jackson, executive director of the D.C. Catholic Conference ["Wuerl Ups Opposition to Gay Marriage," Metro, Sept. 2] that we are all bigots. Many Catholics support the right of all people to marry, whether to a person of the opposite sex or to a person of the same sex. Church authorities should stick to the governance of religious wedding ceremonies and leave to civil authorities the responsibility of granting marriage licenses, a responsibility that should be exercised without discrimination.

Spanish Village of Rainbow Weddings
By ANDREW FERREN
FAR from the hedonistic beaches of Ibiza or the disco nights in Barcelona, the tiny town of Campillo de Ranas — the Little Field of Frogs — is nestled in the rugged hills of Castilla-La Mancha, a 90-minute drive north of Madrid in Guadalajara province. With its squat slate houses barely rising above the rolling hillsides on which they are built, the town’s pretty Romanesque bell tower is the only thing that doesn’t blend into the landscape. The place would appear to be the perfect setting of an open-air staging of “The Flintstones.”
