Castro Espín a Gay-Friendly Communist
COMMENTARY: Mariela Castro Espín, the daughter of Cuban president Raul Castro, is devoted to improving the status of gay people in Cuba. But whatever pleasant sounding pieties she mouths, Espín is still a communist.
By James Kirchick
Over the past few years, the government of Cuba has earned praise for an unlikely development: a campaign to improve the status of the island’s gays. Standing at the forefront of this effort has been an even unlikelier figure: Mariela Castro Espín, the daughter of Raul Castro, who officially assumed the Cuban presidency last year after his brother Fidel fell ill. The latest entry in this narrative was a largely laudatory profile of Espín in The Advocate, which described her as a “champion” of the island’s “gay and transgender community.” Espín is director of the Cuban National Center for Sex Education, an organization which, according to its website, promotes “the development of a culture of sexuality that is full, pleasurable, and responsible, as well as to promote the full exercise of sexual rights.”

The Courts and Privacy
Published: October 2, 2009
To the delight of headline writers, the Alabama Supreme Court recently decided the case of 1568 Montgomery Highway Inc. — also known as Love Stuff — v. the City of Hoover. In a 7-to-2 ruling, it upheld a state law banning the sale of sex toys. The dispute may seem a bit frivolous, but it rests on a fundamental question: After the Supreme Court’s 2003 ruling striking down sodomy laws, how free is the majority to impose its morality through the law?http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/02/chicago-mourns-and-new-york-empathizes/?scp=12&sq=gay&st=cse

Study Finds Gay Roles Up on Broadcast TV
Compiled by DAVE ITZKOFF
The number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters has grown in recent years on prime-time network television but decreased on cable, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said. For its “Where We Are on TV” study, the alliance reviewed 79 scripted comedies and dramas announced for the broadcast networks during the 2009-10 season. It found that of 600 regulars on these shows, 18 are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. The study said that ABC has the most such characters, with 8 out of 168 total series regulars; Fox has 4 (including cartoon characters on “The Simpsons” and “American Dad”), NBC has 3, CW has 2 and CBS, none. In its review of mainstream cable channels, including HBO, Showtime, Comedy Central, AMC and others, the alliance found that the number of series regulars who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender decreased this year, to 25 from 32 last year. When the gay-oriented cable channels here! and Logo were included, the study said, 27 gay characters were added to the tally.

A Baby for the Gay Authors Behind the Daddy Penguins
By Jennifer 8. Lee
It’s yet another example of life imitating art, or at least humans imitating animals. Ever since “And Tango Makes Three,” a children’s book detailing the story of two male penguins and the baby chick they hatched, has been published, in 2005, more people have requested the book’s removal each year from schools and libraries than any other book in the United States, according to the American Library Association.

Waking Up a Tired Genre
Fall offers two smart, funny takes on the family comedy
By DOROTHY RABINOWITZ
All television announces its quality early, but it's been awhile since any half-hour comedy came blazing out of the gate to declare itself with such speed and so many layers of pure seduction as "Modern Family" (Wednesdays, 9-9:30 p.m. Eastern, on ABC). Of all TV genres, comedy is the form quickest to show its stuff for good or ill—viewers know what they're in for in two to three minutes—and since it's mostly for ill, the exceptions come as something of a miracle every time. No miracles are involved, of course. The thrusting wit, the roaring confidence that distinguishes "Modern Family" emerges from the well-honed skills of its creators, Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, both with an imposing list of credits to their names, including "Frasier."

Dallas Judge Shoots Down Texas’ Ban on Gay Marriage
By Ashby Jones
The gay-marriage issue started in states that have voted solidly blue in the last handful of presidential elections: Massachusetts and California. But slowly — and perhaps inexorably — the issue moved to states more violet than indigo, like Iowa. Now the issue has landed in the lap of voters in the most solidly red of all the big states in the country: Texas.

Fort Lauderdale beach guide
By Tom Swick
Fort Lauderdale has successfully shed its image as a Spring Break circus and become a more tranquil family resort. But something of the old song Where the Boys Are still applies, as the city is regularly voted one of the top vacation destinations for gays. In recent years tall buildings have sprouted -- luxury hotels on the beach, luxury condos downtown -- but they haven't totally altered the beach town feel. And now, in addition to salt water, you get a few more urban pleasures.

Two years ago at this fair, a gay man had assaulted me because he was upset with my ex-gay story of hope and change from a homosexual identity. Last week, the House Education and Labor Committee held a full hearing on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, (ENDA) which would ban job discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. ENDA is the crown jewel of an incremental strategy that has dominated the GLBT movement in Washington. The idea is to cut up gay rights into a series of small legislative bites that are digestible to moderate Democrats and Republicans (at least the few left) in swing districts.

Reflection on Yom Kippur and Homosexuality Within Judaism
Benjamin Cohen \ Pink News
PinkNews.co.uk founder Benjamin Cohen reflects back on yesterday’s Jewish festival of Yom Kippur and what it means for an openly gay Jew. Two years ago, I wrote about my experiences in Synagogue over Yom Kippur, the day of atonement when according to Judaism, all men and women are judged and God decides whether to write them into the book of life for the following year, who will die at his allotted time and who before. It’s also the day that God decides who will have a good year and who will have a year of struggle. As I left yesterday’s service, I felt that it would be apt to update the original article. As I sat in Synagogue yesterday during Yom Kippur I once again regretted that I’m still an attendee of the United Synagogue.

‘Hair’ Closes for One Day So Cast Can March in Rally

Playwrights and producers have used scathing commentary, heartbreaking drama and sharp satire to score political points about war, torture, presidents, AIDS, race relations and women’s rights with New York theater audiences. Gay Activist As School Safety Czar?!
Rudi Stettner \ Rant Rave
President Obama has appointed more “czars” than I can keep track of. One of them is a “safe school’s ” czar, whose name is Kevin Jennings. Jennings has been a teacher and a writer on educational issues from a “gay friendly” point of view. There is no law against a homosexual being a teacher. Those who uphold the laws of the jurisdiction in which they teach have the protection of the law for their personal lives. The Washington Times reports that Jennings has had serious difficulties in upholding state laws governing reporting of abuse when he was a teacher. The Washington Times reports as follows.

Ex-Gay Group Calls Hate Crime Laws “Anti-Ex-Gay”
Amanda Hess \ The Sexist \ Washington City Paper
Remember Parents & Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays (PFOX), that rag-tag group of heterosexual activists that just can’t seem to find many “ex-gay” people to advocate for? Last we heard from PFOX, the group was celebrating a court decision which said that “ex-gays”—people who were once gay, but are now totally heterosexual—should be covered under the District’s sexual orientation protections. PFOX was psyched with the ruling, because it meant that the group could begin to capitalize on protections that have been afforded to the LGBT community (hate crime legislation, anti-discrimination policies, etc.) and open up the possibility of suing on behalf of persecuted “ex-gays.”

The US and Europe Have Propped Up So Many Corrupt “Democracies” That the Word Is Losing Meaning

Right Wing Media Send Their Mobs of Crazy Fans to Go After Private Citizens–Including Kids
Eric Boehlert \ Media Matters for America \ AlterNet

The call was part of a National Endowment for the Arts initiative, and it’s a conference call that was secretly taped and has been wildly overhyped in conservative media circles as some sort of linchpin in a larger criminal enterprise being run out of the White House to politicize the arts. President Obama Must Speak Out on Maine Now
David Mixner
Time is running out in Maine. Soon people will begin to request their absentee ballots and start voting. The time for President Obama to make clear that he opposes the ballot measure in that state is now. If he waits any longer, the Maggie Gallagher brigade against human rights will use his opposition to marriage to prove that he supports the proposition. During his presidential campaign, then-Senator Obama was quite clear that he opposed all such measures, despite his opposition to marriage equality.

Tips-Q: Washington Times slimes GLSEN founder Kevin Jennings
From Tips-Q:
Submitted by David Hart:
In May, Kevin Jennings was appointed Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Department of Education’s Office of Safe & Drug Free Schools. Since then, every fundamentalist nut job has taken a whack at Jennings. The reason that they are attacking Jennings is simple; He is gay. Furthermore, the right wing is doing anything that they can to undermine President Obama. They are trying to get Obama to terminate Jennings as a desperate show of (waning) force.

An Interview With Barney Frank
By Ezra Klein
Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) has had a big year. The acid-tongued chair of the House Financial Services Committee has been Congress's point person throughout the financial crisis and is now crafting the regulatory reform package that could reshape Wall Street. He's also the subject of a new biography, one that covers a lot in the subtitle alone -- Stuart Weisberg's "Barney Frank: The Story of America's Only Left-Handed, Gay, Jewish Congressman." The Washington Post's Ezra Klein spoke with Frank about financial regulation, yelling back at town hall protesters and whether the banks still have power on Capitol Hill. Are we lucky that we're not in a second depression? Not lucky -- it took a lot of hard work. There was a three-step process. From last September to spring of this year, we were just trying to dig out of that hole. We have avoided a worse disaster. You don't get reelected by saying, "Things would've been worse without me." Now we're in the phases of making things better and putting down rules so it doesn't happen again.

What Lutherans Are About
Jacqueline L. Salmon's Sept. 25 news story "Decision on Gay Clergy Shakes Unity of Lutheran Denomination" focused primarily on one aspect of a larger story. If you visit congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in the D.C. area on weekends, you will find them running shelters and food pantries, providing transportation for seniors, forming community among young adults, teaching children, worshiping, and praying. People who support the ELCA decision on the inclusion of gay clergy and those who are troubled by it work, worship and pray side by side. Why? Because this is what it means to us to be the church. I think that you will find that most Lutherans are too busy living out the Gospel to take time out to fight over the interpretation of it.

The conventional wisdom says that gays and lesbians should support Democrats’ efforts to expand the federal government’s role in healthcare. After all, in 2008 more than 70 percent of gay voters supported Barack Obama for president, and Democrats up and down the ballot count on gay dollars to fuel their campaigns and advocacy work. The Democrats would never push healthcare reform that actually hurts gay and lesbian Americans, right? Wrong.

Divorce in America: Ind., Fla. counties are tops
By The Associated Press
It’s easy to see why bookkeeper Linda Mortimer moved to the Florida Keys 20 years ago: the impossibly blue water, the year-round sunshine, a lifestyle so laid-back that every day is like a Jimmy Buffett lyric. What Mortimer didn’t anticipate was falling in love – and then getting divorced less than two years after taking her wedding vows.

GOP Thinks Gay Marriage is Socialist
U.S. Representative Steve King (R-IA) made an interesting comment on a Conservative talk show yesterday: They want public affirmation. They want access to public funds and resources. Eventually all those resources will be pooled because that’s the direction we’re going. And not only is it a radical social idea, it is a purely socialist concept in the final analysis.

Same-Sex Marriages: What’s the Big Deal?
Brendon Ayanbadejo \ Huffington Post
First and foremost, church and state are supposed to be completely separated when it comes to the rule of law in the United States. So the religious argument that God meant for only man and woman to be together has no bearing here! America is not Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Mormon, Catholic, or any other religion that is out there. And the pantheon of gods can attest that there are hundreds of them. We are a secular capitalistic democracy. That’s it.

Tea Parties and Religious Right Court at Values Voters Summit
Sarah Posner \ Religion Dispatches
It started with an homage to the notorious CNBC ranter Rick Santelli, the lesser god of the tea party movement. But at the values Voter Summit workshop on how to grow tea parties last weekend, the faux-populist Santelli was quickly eclipsed by a higher power. “We have been put in this country to do this for such a time as this,” exhorted Viviana Hernandez, a self-identified chaplain from Brooklyn, as the microphone was passed around the audience. “This [the tea party movement] is being birthed by the Almighty. Because He started this nation, and He does not want to turn it over to those who are godless, to those who would take our children, and just use them and abuse them and destroy their destiny.”

Bishop Harry Jackson Worried That Right Wing Racism Hurts His Anti-Gay Crusade
People for the American Way
Bishop Harry Jackson, who is leading a campaign to prevent same-sex couples in the District of Columbia from being able to legally marry, is employing increasingly divisive rhetoric designed to push a wedge between the District’s African Americans and supporters of gay rights in the city. In his weekend speech to national Religious Right activists at the Values Voter Summit and in a recent column, Jackson ignores African American LGBT people and portrays the gay community as enemies and oppressors of poor black single mothers. In his Values Voter Summit remarks on Saturday, Jackson urged attendees to be more careful about attacks on President Obama that might sound racist, because it was making it harder for him to convince black pastors to join his anti-gay crusade.

Gay v. Gay Custody Battles
Camilla Taylor \ Senior Staff Attorney \ Lambda Legal
Child custody cases are among the most tragic on our docket. Each involves a child or children whose world has turned upside down while parents battle with each other over issues such as child support or visitation. Regardless of whether a case involves gay or non-gay parents, children often suffer terribly when parents go to court because they cannot agree on how to resolve their dispute over child custody.

Women at Arms–Mothers at War, Torn Between Country and Children
LIZETTE ALVAREZ \ New York Times
When Specialist Jaymie Holschlag returned home after 12 months in Iraq, a new set of children awaited her.
Her son, Seth, 10, who had moved in with his grandfather, switching towns and schools, was angry and depressed. His grades had plummeted and his weight had ballooned by 60 pounds. Her 4-year-old daughter, Celeste, scarcely knew her. And in Specialist Holschlag’s absence, new rules had taken hold — chocolate syrup on waffles, Mountain Dew with dinner. Any hint of a return to the old order met with tirades and tantrums.

Federally Funded Charities Must Play by the Rules
Washington Post
Below is an excerpt from “On Faith,” an Internet feature sponsored by The Washington Post and Newsweek. Each week, more than 50 figures from the world of faith engage in a conversation about an aspect of religion. This week’s question: Dozens of major religious groups and denominations are urging Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. to renounce a Bush-era memo that allows faith-based charities that receive federal funding to discriminate in hiring. Should religious charities that receive federal grant money be allowed to discriminate in hiring?
