To the Editor:
Regarding the Vatican and the disaffected Anglicans, I have a twofold response: First, is this a precursor to the Vatican’s finally accepting a married clergy? Then amen, so be it! The Catholic Church began with a married clergy. Second, however, if the criterion of the disaffected Anglicans to convert to Roman Catholicism is based on the presupposition that the Catholic hierarchy forbids gays and women in the priesthood, then the prospective candidates will be sadly disappointed. Whether we care to admit it or not, there are many gays in the Catholic priesthood, and many faithful lay Catholics would like to see women join the priesthood. I would hope that those converting to the Roman Catholic faith would do so because of the church’s teaching on faith and morals rather than on a false perception of an ecclesiastical utopia. My advice would be to look before you leap — with faith, not fear!

Paycheck Feminism
KAREN KORNBLUH AND RACHEL HOMER \ MS Magazine
In a subtle shift with momentous implications, women are on the verge of becoming more than 50 percent of U.S. paid workers. This landmark should come as no surprise; labor statisticians are well aware that women’s share of the paid workforce has been swelling for decades, hitting 48 percent at the start of the new millennium. That means that this economy depends on women’s strong participation. Oddly enough, it was the current economic bad times that helped boost women to the halfway point, as men have comprised nearly three-quarters of recent job layoffs.

Gay man's death a hate crime
After I read the horrendous events that led to Craig Cohen's death, I was very upset. I am angry that Cmdr. Wierzbicki feels it was not a hate crime. I think most people who are robbed aren't left with their cash, wallet and credit cards. It is obvious to me that his cell phone was taken so that he could not call for help. Most people know that many diners at the Peter Pan Diner are gay. I believe that is why Craig was targeted. The biggest mystery to me is why we have a Hate Crimes Task Force if no one is going to risk standing up for the victims and go against those who commit a hate crime.

Thomas is bigoted
Cal Thomas' articles are like bad accidents -- hard not to look at and repulsive when you do. His bigotry toward gays in his Oct 17 Other Views column, Don't ask, tell or legitimize, confirms that he is a dinosaur. We have leaders today who realize that gay people are assets to our society, and that is why change is in motion. Have Thomas talk to Meghan McCain. I have Republican friends and family members who believe that gays should be able to marry and serve in the military. Divide-and-conquer is not working. We need to bring all of our people to the table to make this country happy and prosperous. Hatred comes in many subtle forms, but Thomas' is glaring.

Anti-gay group rolls out scare tactics as referendum nears
By DANIELLE TRUSZKOVSKY
ON OCT. 1, the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics & Election Practices met to determine if a complaint filed by Fred Karger of Californians Against Hate against the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) would be investigated. In his complaint, Karger claimed that NOM violated campaign reporting requirements and that the group was actively participating in money laundering. Despite the evidence he submitted, which included NOM emails pertaining to fundraising specifically for Maine while alluding to donor anonymity, the commission’s staff recommended that no investigation be conducted due to lack of supporting evidence.

Offer Raises Idea of Marriage for Catholic Priests
By RACHEL DONADIO
ROME — In making it easier for traditionalist Anglicans to become Catholic, Pope Benedict XVI once again revealed the character of his papacy: to reach out to the most fervent of like-minded believers, even if they are not Catholic. Yet some observers wonder whether his move could paradoxically liberalize the church — or at least wedge it open — on a crucial issue: celibacy.

Sailor to be ousted in harassment probe
The former leader of a dog unit in Bahrain will be removed from his current position and forced to retire after the Navy reviewed years-old allegations of hazing and sexual harassment. The Navy announced that Chief Petty Officer Michael Toussaint also would receive a letter of censure and be subject to a retirement pay-grade determination, which could affect his retirement pay. The move came after the Navy decided last month to review its investigation of more than 90 hazing incidents between 2004 and 2006 in the Military Working Dog Division at Bahrain. One of the victims of the hazing, Joseph Rocha, said he was tied to a chair and left in a dog kennel, and forced to simulate sex on another sailor. He said he decided to leave the Navy in 2007 by telling his commander he was gay, in violation of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Rocha wrote about his experience earlier this month in The Washington Post.

Unity proving elusive for both major parties
MCT News Service
Recent years have seen the Democrats and Republicans evolve into predominantly liberal and conservative parties, respectively, rather than the broad coalitions of the past. But some current developments suggest neither has achieved total unity and that internal conflicts threaten both parties' short-term goals _ and possibly their long-term ones.

‘Surprises from Hebrew’s Golden Age,’ Debbie Friedman Chanukah concert upcoming at Congregation Etz Chaim
Jesse Monteagudo shares a few interesting events coming up at Congregation Etz Chaim in Wilton Manors:
Cong. Etz Chaim lecture promises "Surprises from Hebrew's Golden Age"
Congregation Etz Chaim, Wilton Manors' reform synagogue, presents "Love! Humor! Chivalry! Surprises from Hebrew's Golden Age" on Wednesday, November 18, at 8 p.m. Dr. Murray H. Lichtenstein, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Classical and Oriental Studies at Hunter College, City University of New York, will rediscover unsuspected treasures from a bygone age. The Hebrew literature composed in medieval Spain under Moslem rule is rich, varied, and indeed full of surprises. Hebrew poets of the Middle Ages sang lavishly and sensually of love, its agony, and its ecstasy. There are also plenty of comic takes on the timeless battle of the sexes, in which men and women lampoon the foibles of the opposite gender. We will enjoy the work of Jews, especially those who lived in Spain and Italy, who composed highly creative Hebrew versions of the great works being written in the world around them: clever fables in the tradition of Aesop, heroic tales of Alexander the Great, adventures of the knights of King Arthur's court, and more.

Sex a private issue
The God that Cal Thomas serves is an unforgiving master (Don't ask, tell or legitimize, Other Views, Oct. 17). Thomas argues against gay rights because he believes that sexual behavior is a moral issue. He's dead wrong when it comes to sexual behavior among consenting adults. That's a private, personal issue that should be within no one's power to regulate or condemn. If God made man in his own image, then he surely made gay men and women, too.

The Vatican's announcement this week that it will allow disgruntled Anglicans to join the Roman Catholic Church en masse has caused a stir among South Florida Episcopalians, members of the American wing of the worldwide Anglican communion. Don't discharge gays
Cal Thomas' assertions in his Oct. 17 Other Views column, Don't ask, tell or legitimize, are as absurd as most homophobic arguments. Using misdirected association and illogical conclusions, Thomas' defense of the military's ``don't ask-don't tell'' policy is nonsense when compared to history.
From the Spartan defense at Thermopole by 300 homosexuals (they were the most terrifying force of their time) fighting to the death against 10,000 through two world wars and into the present, there is no solid evidence that heterosexuals can claim being braver or more dedicated, or that homosexuals display a lack of courage or discipline any more or less than any other group.

For more than a decade, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), signed into law by President Bill Clinton, has denied married same-sex couples certain federal rights. Under DOMA, these couples, even if legally married in their state, are denied social security survivors’ benefits, medical leave to care for a sick spouse, and equal treatment under immigration law. DOMA also prevents states from recognizing same-sex marriages that were enacted in other states, making it difficult for couples to move from state to state.

The Obama administration’s safe schools czar, Kevin Jennings, has accused the Baptists, the Boy Scouts and sports fans of anti-gay bias, and he has advocated a special high school for gay teens as well as gay-straight alliance clubs for every high school in America. Jennings, who was a prominent homosexual activist before being named director of the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools at the U.S. Department of Education, also has called for kindergarteners to be taught to respect all sexual orientations, while insisting that “ex-gay messages” and “Christian values” are ‘misused to isolate or denigrate lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people” and have no place in the nation’s public schools.

Why is Uber-Homophobe Tom Coburn Writing for the Advocate?
Alex Blaze \ Bilerico Project
Sen. Tom Coburn has a column up in The Advocate about health care. His argument is asinine (the private health care system is great for people with HIV, particularly the individual market, that we should further empower it), but that’s not really the point.

I admit it. I watch Gossip Girl. It’s a terribly cheesy, melodramatic, poorly written soap opera. But it’s so pretty! That, and the show’s tone is so borderline camp it’s hard to look away. It’s my guilty pleasure, but I draw the line at the CW’s new 90210 or Melrose Place remakes. I may be a trashy TV viewer, but that’s plain skankerific.

The two were taunted by their teammates, who called them derogatory names. Merced told KMGH-TV News that he felt the experience was humiliating.

Media Enabled Bush 1’s Savage Attacks on Maddow and Olbermann, Yet Continue to Ignore Bush Family’s Sordid Past
Russ Baker \ AlterNet
The other day, George H.W. Bush fired a salvo against mean media liberals who savaged his son. Soon, brickbats were flying to and fro about who said what about whom. But this mini-controversy is nothing more than a distraction from the real story: even the most animated of Bush critics on television have not gotten around to acknowledging the full, unspeakably dark nature of the Bush enterprise. Bush41, it turns out, has nothing at all to complain about.

Rethinking Marriage. The World Has Changed. It’s Time!
Melissa Harris-Lacewell \ The Nation \ AlterNet
Feminist author Jessica Valenti’s marriage to Andrew Golis of Talking Points Memo was the lead wedding story in the New York Times style section this Sunday. It was odd to see this Full Frontal Feminist not only marry, but also submit to a romantic short story about her union. Indeed the Times seemed intent on portraying Valenti’s marriage as a morality tale: tough feminists may talk about social equality, but all girls really want is a good man and note-worthy bustle. For some, Valenti’s wedding became a lens for assessing her feminist credentials.

A Manifesto! The Time Has Come!
Soulforce
I have made a decision. I will no longer debate the issue of homosexuality in the church with anyone. I will no longer engage the biblical ignorance that emanates from so many right-wing Christians about how the Bible condemns homosexuality, as if that point of view still has any credibility. I will no longer discuss with them or listen to them tell me how homosexuality is “an abomination to God,” about how homosexuality is a “chosen lifestyle,” or about how through prayer and “spiritual counseling” homosexual persons can be “cured.” Those arguments are no longer worthy of my time or energy. I will no longer dignify by listening to the thoughts of those who advocate “reparative therapy,” as if homosexual persons are somehow broken and need to be repaired. I will no longer talk to those who believe that the unity of the church can or should be achieved by rejecting the presence of, or at least at the expense of, gay and lesbian people. I will no longer take the time to refute the unlearned and undocumentable claims of certain world religious leaders who call homosexuality “deviant.” I will no longer listen to that pious sentimentality that certain Christian leaders continue to employ, which suggests some version of that strange and overtly dishonest phrase that “we love the sinner but hate the sin.” That statement is, I have concluded, nothing more than a self-serving lie designed to cover the fact that these people hate homosexual persons and fear homosexuality itself, but somehow know that hatred is incompatible with the Christ they claim to profess, so they adopt this face-saving and absolutely false statement. I will no longer temper my understanding of truth in order to pretend that I have even a tiny smidgen of respect for the appalling negativity that continues to emanate from religious circles where the church has for centuries conveniently perfumed its ongoing prejudices against blacks, Jews, women and homosexual persons with what it assumes is “high-sounding, pious rhetoric.” The day for that mentality has quite simply come to an end for me. I will personally neither tolerate it nor listen to it any longer. The world has moved on, leaving these elements of the Christian Church that cannot adjust to new knowledge or a new consciousness lost in a sea of their own irrelevance. They no longer talk to anyone but themselves. I will no longer seek to slow down the witness to inclusiveness by pretending that there is some middle ground between prejudice and oppression. There isn’t. Justice postponed is justice denied. That can be a resting place no longer for anyone. An old civil rights song proclaimed that the only choice awaiting those who cannot adjust to a new understanding was to “Roll on over or we’ll roll on over you!” Time waits for no one.

American Evangelicals Play Role In Uganda Effort To 'Wipe Out' Gays
October 19, 2009
In March, American anti-gay activists traveled to Uganda for a conference that pledged to "wipe out" homosexuality. Seven months later, a draconian bill has been introduced that pledges to make good on this threat. The "Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009" is so severe that it is designed to shred the spirit and suffocate the soul of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Ugandans. If it passes, Uganda will become a predator state that actively hunts down GLBT people to destroy them. Uganda already punished gay intimacy with life in prison. But, apparently that was not harsh enough,
with this bill penalizing anyone who "attempts to commit the offence" with up to seven years in jail. Additionally, a person charged will be forced to undergo an invasive medical examination to determine their HIV status. If the detainees are found to be HIV+, they may be executed.

Gypsies, Jews, Homosexuals Beware: Fidesz Eyes 2010 Elections
By Veronika Gulyas
Are you a Jew, a Gypsy or attracted to your own sex? Members of Hungarian opposition party Fidesz, widely expected to win power in spring 2010, may have a word or two for you. “I love Hungary, I love Hungarian people, and I prefer Hungarian interests to global financial capital, or Jewish capital, if you like, which wants to devour the whole world, but especially, Hungary,” said Fidesz Member of Parliament Oszkar Molnar, who is also mayor of Edeleny, a town of 10,300 inhabitants in Eastern Hungary. Molnar made his remarks at the end of 2008 on a local TV channel, but they’ve just burst into national prominence. (Video in Hungarian here.) The same official in the summer claimed as fact that pregnant Roma women take medication to give birth to “fools to receive higher family subsidies. Three Questions for…Theodore Olson

Of all the lawyers who might have challenged California’s ban on same-sex marriage, one of the least likely candidates would seem to be Theodore Olson: a high-ranking Justice Department attorney under Ronald Reagan, U.S. solicitor general under George W. Bush, and lawyer for Bush in the Bush vs. Gore case that decided the 2000 presidential election. But when a federal judge in San Francisco held a critical hearing last week in a suit by two same-sex couples challenging Proposition 8, they were represented by Olson and David Boies, his courtroom adversary in Bush vs. Gore. Before the hearing, Olson talked with Chronicle staff writer Bob Egelko about the case.

Rebranding America
BONO \ New York Times
A FEW years ago, I accepted a Golden Globe award by barking out an expletive. One imagines President Obama did the same when he heard about his Nobel, and not out of excitement. When Mr. Obama takes the stage at Oslo City Hall this December, he won’t be the first sitting president to receive the peace prize, but he might be the most controversial. There’s a sense in some quarters of these not-so-United States that Norway, Europe and the World haven’t a clue about the real President Obama; instead, they fixate on a fantasy version of the president, a projection of what they hope and wish he is, and what they wish America to be.

Yes, it was hate crime
Regarding the story of a Wilton Manors gay man stomped to death and how the police won't treat it as a hate crime: I am flabbergasted. According to the Sun Sentinel, "Police documents show Villanova's wallet and cell phone were stolen, while Cohen's cell phone and keys were taken. The attackers didn't take Cohen's wallet or other property, including a watch." That story and other news reports tell us how Mr. Cohen's brain was smashed in by the bottom of the suspects' feet. Either Cmdr. Rick Wierzbicki, who heads the Broward sheriff's Hate Crimes Task Force, isn't qualified for his position with the police department, or he's a wolf in sheep's clothing. Either way, he's wrong. Furthermore, as a gay man, I am appalled by our so-called gay leaders. There's more to leading a community than pressing the flesh in an attempt to gain political clout, more to being a leader than going to health department meetings and fighting for a single cause or standing up in front of a congregation each Sunday and providing a moral compass. If they won't fight for our safety, who will?

Miami Herald op-ed: Gay rights are human rights
BY JOANNA GROVER, jodygrover@aol.com
Imagine having only five minutes to say goodbye to your dying husband or wife of nearly two decades. Imagine being a 10-year-old girl and being physically blocked from saying a last, ``I love you,'' to your mother, who is just down the hall at the hospital. This may sound unconscionable, but it happened, just as described, to the Langbehn-Pond family at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

Political Beat
Broward County Commissioner Ken Keechl, leading all commission candidates in fundraising, appears to be the only one paying for a campaign office. And that rent check is going to his partner -- as it did during his 2006 campaign. Keechl is paying $3,100 a month to rent a Wilton Manors office from Ted Adcock, according to his campaign finance report.

BUJU BANTON: Censorship the wrong way to fight hatred
It is disheartening that some of our colleagues in the gay and lesbian equality movement have embraced censorship as a tactic to combat hate speech. In his Oct. 6 Other Views article, Songs of hate, George Byars calls on public officials to ban the Miami concert by Buju Banton and Beenie Man. This is terribly short-sighted: Giving government the power to censor messages it thinks are dangerous never advances the cause of equality and freedom.

Corvino: The other gay ballot battles
By John Corvino, columnist, 365gay.com
I’ve spent the last week traveling through rural Wisconsin for a series of diversity lectures at small technical colleges. Lecturing on gay issues at such venues can be eye-opening. It’s a big country out there, and while students today may be a good deal more gay-friendly than they once were, not everyone shares the views of a typical liberal-arts major at NYU or UC-Berkeley.

During the Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor, Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, had some questions about Sotomayor’s rumored temper, claiming that his questions were valid even though there was no evidence that the rumors were true.
