Plan would move state's primary up
By J. TAYLOR RUSHING
Capital Bureau Chief
TALLAHASSEE - A legislative committee recommended Thursday that Florida'spresidential primary be moved to give the Sunshine State more of a voice inthe national election.
The proposal would change the 2008 primary in Florida to Feb. 5 or to oneweek after the yet-unscheduled New Hampshire primary. Without the changerecommended by the House Committee on Ethics and Elections, the primarywould be March 4, 2008.
Republicans and Democrats appear to agree on the issue. Both sides sayFlorida's primary is too late to allow the state to influence thepresidential campaigns because the race is often largely over by March.
