Library employees set record straight about mayor's comments

Video: Library employees disagree with mayor's com

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Employees at a gay and lesbian Library are trying to set the record straight about what the Fort Lauderdale mayor says are controversial materials inside.

The Stonewall gay and lesbian Library and Archives is just one of the ongoing elements of controversy between Mayor Jim Naugle and the gay community.

In the past Naugle has called the books in the library pornography and he opposed the library's move to a private area of a public library in the city.

Tomorrow, the library beings the process of the move and library employees wanted to set the record straight. "This is a cultural, research, literary library," said Nate Klarseld. "It is a place that is not made for any sort of entertainment or anything like that."

Stonewall library officials say they have certain rules for the library, one of which does not allow anyone under the age of 18 allowed inside.

Thai Warrant Issued For Pedophile Suspect

By REUTERS
October 18, 2007
Filed at 8:11 a.m. ET

Police said a second Thai teenager alleged Christopher Paul Neil paid him for oral sex in 2003, when he was nine, giving them grounds for an arrest warrant for the Canadian fugitive who fled a teaching post in South Korea last week.

"The court just approved the request to arrest this man who paid the boy 200 baht for a blow job at his Bangkok apartment," Major-General Wimol Powin, head of the child crime unit, told Reuters.

On Wednesday, another teenager alleged Neil molested him at his Bangkok apartment, photographed and paid him between 500 and 1,000 baht ($15-$30) for each sex act when he was 14, Police Colonel Varayuth Sukavat said.

The young man said he was abused when he went to play computer games at Neil's apartment. He knew Neil through his father, who was hired to drive the Canadian around Bangkok and to the infamous red-light beach town of Pattaya, Varayuth said on Wednesday.

A security guard at the Bangkok apartment building where Neil lived when he is accused of abusing young boys, told Reuters on Thursday Neil was a "quiet" man.

Quandary Over Gay Rights Bill: Is It Better to Protect Some or None?

By Shailagh Murray
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, October 18, 2007; A23

There's a saying in Congress about passing legislation: Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. The transgender community is learning that lesson the hard way.

Today, the House Education and Labor Committee is scheduled to consider a bill that would ban employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. Originally, the 2007 version of what is called the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, or ENDA, introduced in April, also included gender identity. But when Democrats realized that the transgender expansion could cost them a win, they dropped it -- much as they would shed a controversial agricultural subsidy that threatened to bring down a bigger farm bill.

Yet the decision ignited a firestorm among gay, lesbian and transgender advocacy groups, creating a rift between pragmatists who believed that a flawed bill was better than no bill and those who preferred nothing if they couldn't have it all. As it now stands, the more limited bill is expected to narrowly clear the House next week, at which point the Senate will likely move forward.

Caught in the middle of the House debate was Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who was a co-author of the bill and is one of two openly gay members of Congress. Frank added the transgender language because he believes that discrimination against people based on gender identity is real and serious. Then he was informed by Education and Labor Chairman George Miller (D-Calif.) that Democrats on the committee were balking.

On Sept. 27, House leaders announced that they would move forward with sexual-orientation-only protections that had been sought by gay and lesbian organizations for more than a decade. Frank, a longtime crusader for the cause, endorsed the move, noting that the transgender provisions could reemerge as a separate bill once support for them grew.

My reactions to Larry Craig sitting down with Matt Lauer:

What is Senator Wide Stance doing giving an interview?

Does he think repeating yet again that he didn't mean to stick his hand under the bathroom stall divider is going to help his public image?

Why is he subjecting his wife to this?

Didn't Craig tell the world he was resigning? Is this a new strategy when you're under fire: announce you're quitting, wait till the furor dies down, say never mind and hope everyone is too bored with the story to care that you're still there?

Anti-Gay Church: Thompson Agreed With Us

By ERIK SCHELZIG
The Associated Press
Wednesday, October 17, 2007; 6:12 PM

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Members of the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church are urging Fred Thompson to support their stance on homosexuality _ a position on which they say the Republican presidential candidate once "saw eye to eye" with them.

Thompson was hired for a mid-1980s legal case in Kansas on the recommendation of Margie Phelps, daughter of Westboro founder Fred Phelps.

The Topeka, Kan.-based church is now best known for protesting at soldiers' funerals, claiming their deaths are retribution for the nation's acceptance of homosexuality.

Thompson campaign spokeswoman Karen Hanretty on Wednesday dismissed the church as "a radical fringe group, looking to draw attention to themselves."

"Their behavior at the funerals of fallen soldiers is disgraceful and reprehensible," she said. "In no way do these people share Fred's values."

SF Archbishop Sorry for Communion Flap

The Associated Press
Wednesday, October 17, 2007; 12:45 PM

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco's top-ranking Catholic clergyman apologized for serving Communion to two men dressed as nuns during a church service in the heart of the city's gay community.

In a letter posted on the Archdiocese of San Francisco's Web site, Archbishop George Niederauer said when he offered Communion to the two members of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at the Oct. 7 mass, he didn't recognize either as wearing "mock religious garb." He apologized for giving them the sacrament, calling it "a mistake."

"The manner of dress and public comportment of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is deeply offensive to women religious and to the witness of holiness and Christian service that women religious have offered to the Church and to the world for centuries," he wrote.

Members of the decades-old group dress in heavy makeup and elaborate headdresses to satirize the church and draw attention to a variety of causes, including gay rights and access to AIDS care.

Video of Niederauer giving Communion to the two activists while preaching in the city's Castro district earlier this month has stoked a furor among some local Catholics and conservative bloggers.

Oct 19, NYC: "What are we making when we make love online?"

http://www.wawhite.org/home/home.htm

The William Alanson White Psychoanalytic Institute
invites you to join us for a lecture by Dr. Todd Essig.

"What are we making when we make love online?"

The lecture will take place at 6pm at the Institute:
20 West 74th Street (between Columbus and Cental Park West)
New York City.

Admission is open to interested professionals and students

About the Program

Digital communications play an increasingly large role in how people
conduct intimate relationships, running the gamut from cybersex and online
dating to simulated marriages, care-giving, and self-esteem--even
parenting via virtual visitation.

Online love presents challenge, opportunity, and risk, both to the
individuals involved and to society. "By combining what we learn doing
psychotherapy with the broader study of techo-cultural trends," according
to Dr. Essig, "we can best help our patients--and contribute to the
emerging cultural conversation." While some people and relationships do
thrive, even though there are potential costs to society, others develop
compulsive attachments to technologically-mediated simulations. The
"neo-luddites" also have problems, rigidly refusing full-participation in
our emerging digital culture and thereby diminishing freedom and
opportunity.

Furthermore, states Dr. Essig, "Psychotherapists, especially those working
with addictions and compulsive behaviors, need a nuanced appreciation
across the entire spectrum of current activity, as well as a conceptual
framework for understanding not just today's technology but tomorrow's
possibilities."

Same-sex couple faces trespassing trial

Associated Press
Vail, CO Colorado
October 17, 2007

DENVER - A same-sex couple who refused to leave the Denver clerk and recorder's office after they were denied a marriage license will go face trial for a charge of trespassing.

Kate Burns and Sheila Schroeder of Englewood pleaded not guilty Tuesday stemming from the Sept. 24 incident. A trial date was scheduled for Dec. 17.

Both refused to leave the clerk and recorder's office, though it was closing.

The couple contended they should be entitled to all the federal benefits of a heterosexual married couple.

Colorado voters in November passed a ballot proposal banning gay marriage. They also rejected a proposal to give same-sex couples some of the same legal benefits as married spouses.

The results of a ballot of Lib Dem members in London to choose their candidate will be announced next month.

Barrister Chamali Fernando and local councillor Fiyaz Mughal are also running for the nomination.

Mr Paddick, who has never held elected office, will face Labour's Ken Livingstone, who has been Mayor of London since 2000, and Tory candidate Boris Johnson, currently the MP for Henley.

Mike, 93, 'comes out' with first book

GAY pensioner Mike Soper, 93, has become one of the country's oldest authors after publishing his first book, The Heart Entrapped - a gay romance novel.

Mr Soper decided to write the novel after 'coming out' at the age of 91 - and only told his fellow residents at the The Old Vicarage nursing home, Moulsford, after they asked to read his novel.

He said: "When all the old ladies heard about the book, they asked if they could read it. So I had to tell them I was gay and that it was a gay-themed novel."

Mr Soper, an accademic at Christ Church, Oxford, until 1981, said it was nice to be honest about his sexuality after so many years.

He said: "I had to keep quiet about my sexuality when I was lecturing at Oxford, as undergraduates would not have been very kind if they had known I was gay.

Appeal Denied In Brandon Teena Murder

by 365Gay.com Newscenter Staff

(Falls City, Nebraska) A judge has turned down a motion for a new trial for one of the two men convicted in the 1993 murder of trans teen Brandon Teena (pictured).

John Lotter is on death row for the murders of Teena and two others.

The killings led to the award-winning 1999 film, "Boy's Don't Cry''.

Lotter applied for a new trial last month after Lotter's partner in the murders, Marvin Nissen, said he was the only attacker and that he had shot and stabbed all three. (story)

Nissen is serving a life sentence. During his trial Nissen blamed Lotter for carrying out the murders. Nissen at the time said he had stabbed Brandon but that Lotter fired all the shots that killed Brandon and the others.

Venezuela Moves To Protect Gays In New Constitution

by 365Gay.com Newscenter Staff
Posted: October 17, 2007 - 7:00 pm ET

(Caracas) Venezuela may become the first nation in South America to constitutionally protect its citizens on the basis of sexuality.

The government has been examining a call by President Hugo Chavez's plan to rewrite the country's constitution.

The Chavez-controlled National Assembly this week approved amendments that would add sexual orientation to the categories protected under human rights. The issue had already received the OK of various committees, signaling the measure was likely to gain approval of the Assembly.

Among those speaking passionately in favor of the measure was Rep. Iris Varela from the state of Tachira.

The section of the proposed constitution also would include a ban on discrimination on the basis of race, religion, age and health condition.

Death Threats Over DeGeneres' Dog Drama

by 365Gay.com Newscenter Staff
Posted: October 18, 2007 - 6:30 am ET

(Los Angeles, California) Ellen DeGeneres says she's done talking about her canine dilemma and is pleading for calm, saying on her show that the controversy surrounding an adopted dog has "gotten out of hand."

During a Wednesday taping of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," to be aired Thursday, DeGeneres told viewers she wouldn't speak again until the dog, Iggy, is returned to DeGeneres' hairdresser and the woman's young daughters.

The dispute erupted last month when DeGeneres and her partner adopted Iggy, a black Brussels Griffon mix terrier. When Iggy wasn't able to get along with DeGeneres' cats, the couple gave the dog to DeGeneres' hairdresser.

Mutts and Moms, the nonprofit dog-rescue organization that originally gave DeGeneres the dog, later took it back, saying the talk show host had violated the adoption agreement by not informing them that she was giving the dog away. That set off a firestorm of nasty e-mails and threats directed at the agency after DeGeneres shared the blow by blow with viewers on her show this week.

"Let me just say this, it's gotten out of hand," DeGeneres said on the segment to air Thursday. "I want nothing, nothing more than that dog returned to that family. But you don't resort to violence. So anybody out there, please stop that. Please don't threaten or do whatever."

GOP Hopes Voter Anger Cuts Both Ways

by The Associated Press
Posted: October 18, 2007 - 9:00 am ET

(Washington) Republican strategists hope a volatile electorate will save the party from congressional losses in 2008 that appear possible due to a string of setbacks.

Democrats are holding clear edges in raising money, limiting retirements and deflecting public anger.

In the latest sign, the party's House campaign committee said Wednesday it has about $25 million to spend on targeted races next year; its Republican counterpart is in debt.

Facing such news, the GOP's top House strategist summoned reporters to his campaign headquarters to put the best possible light on matters.

In short, said Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., people are angry at lawmakers and the Democratic-controlled Congress in general, and massive fundraising will not save Democratic incumbents from voters' wrath.

Patrick To Back Obama, Perry Goes With Rudy

by The Associated Press
Posted: October 18, 2007 - 9:00 am ET

(Washington) Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, a one-time Clinton administration aide, has decided to endorse Barack Obama over rival Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary, The Associated Press has learned.

Patrick planned to make his declaration next week during a rally with the candidate in Massachusetts, according to a top administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity prior to the official announcement.

While Patrick served in the 1990s as head of the Justice Department's civil rights division under former President Clinton, husband of the New York senator, he also shares a strong connection with Obama from their mutual Chicago heritage and experience as black student leaders at Harvard Law School.

Last fall, Patrick became the first black governor of Massachusetts and only the second black state leader in the nation's history. Obama has the potential to become the nation's first black president. He also visited Massachusetts on Patrick's behalf during last year's gubernatorial campaign and his endorsement returns the political favor.

The administration official played down race as a factor in the decision, pointing instead to the governor's belief that Obama is attempting to inspire the public to re-engage in the political process - a goal of Patrick's since his "Together We Can" gubernatorial campaign.

(San Antonio, Texas) A former San Antonio police officer sentenced to 24 years and four months in prison for the rape and beating of a transsexual woman should get a new trial the original judge in the case has told an appeals court.

Dean Gutierrez was sentenced in January in federal court for violating the civil rights of Starlight Bernal by committing aggravated sexual abuse while on duty. (story)

Last week he appealed to 5th Circuit federal Court of Appeals the have the conviction overturned for a new trial.

Now he has gained the support of federal Judge Xavier Rodriguez the judge who sentenced him.

Gutierrez claims that that Bernal entrapped him in a bid to extort money from him.

In a brief submitted to the appeals court this week Rodriquez says that new evidence and additional witnesses cast doubt on Bernal's allegations that led to Gutierrez's arrest.

Slain Gay Man's Mother Fights to Keep Killer in Jail

October 18, 2007

One man involved in the 1991 murder of a Texas gay man may be released early from prison, unless the slain man's mother can intervene. The Houston Chronicle reported Tuesday that Nancy Rodriguez met with parole officials requesting that Jon Buice remain in prison. This is her third visit over a decade and a half to the parole board to keep Buice behind bars for the killing of Paul Broussard.

"It's not been easy," she said to the Chronicle. "But I won't stop."

Broussard was 27 when he was murdered outside a nightclub in the Montrose neighborhood of Houston.

Buice is one of 10 men convicted of the beating and stabbing. He has served 15 years of a 45-year sentence.

The parole board will announce its decision within the next 15 days. (The Advocate)

S.F. Archbishop Sorry for Giving Communion to Cross-dressers

October 18, 2007

San Francisco's top-ranking Catholic clergyman apologized for serving Communion to two men dressed as nuns during a church service in the heart of the city's gay enclave.

In a letter posted on the archdiocese of San Francisco's Web site, Archbishop George Niederauer said when he offered Communion to the two members of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at the October 7 Mass, he didn't recognize either as wearing ''mock religious garb.'' He apologized for giving them the sacrament, calling it ''a mistake.''

''The manner of dress and public comportment of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is deeply offensive to women religious and to the witness of holiness and Christian service that women religious have offered to the Church and to the world for centuries,'' he wrote.

Larry Craig: he'd 'take a very serious look' at legislation to stop
restroom stings

The nightmare continues for the GOP. Toe-tapping Larry invited Idaho
newsman Mark Johnson of KTVB into his home and sat for a 90-minute
interview that aired Tuesday. Craig's wife Suzanne dutifully sat by his
side as he told his side of the story about the encounter in the
Minneapolis airport bathroom that made him a household name for all the
wrong reasons. The transcript is up

http://www.ktvb.com/news/growing/stories/ktvbn-oct1607-craig_trans_A.1779d9ea2.html

I'll give you the money quote from the interview first:

Mark Johnson: We gave folks an opportunity on our website to askquestions - and boy did they submit the questions. Many of them you'veanswered here tonight. Mark from Boise... not this Mark from Boise - hadone that I think you might find interesting. Mark writes "You are accusedof a sex crime without physically committing one. Would you supportlegislation that protects citizens from police entrapment in restrooms andother public places.Sen. Larry Craig: Mark, I'd have to take a very serious look at that. I'venot only heard from Mark - I've heard from a lot of citizens ande-mailers. They've felt they got entrapped, they felt they got profiled. The worst thing in a free society is to have law enforcement profilingpeople because they look a certain way, therefore they must be. That isjust wrong.more....

Washington DC Police Chief Lanier issues landmark policy regarding treatment oftransgender residents

WASHINGTON-Metropolitan Police Chief L. Cathy Lanier issued aDepartment General Order today which sets the highest standards in thenation for the treatment of transgender people by police officers. "The policy plainly lays out for MPD officers how transgenderindividuals should be treated once they are taken into custody. I havestressed to my officers that every person we come into contact with must betreated with respect at all times, no matter their gender identity or sexualorientation," said Chief Lanier.

At a forum in June organized by the DC Trans Coalition, the District'stransgender community came together to decide what changes they needed fromthe police department, Fire/EMS, and the Department of Corrections. Sincethen, the DC Trans Coalition has been working together with the GLLU and MPDfor new policies that address the community's concerns. "Because the whole community came together around these issues, transgender people in DC won't have to be so afraid of arbitrary arrest andmistreatment in police custody," said Ruby Corado, a member of the DC TransCoalition.

The General Order prohibits "gender profiling," and creates proceduresto ensure officers are not targeting transgender people for searches andquestioning because of their gender expression. It also directs officers touse the appropriate pronouns for transgender people, and would stop jailstaff from endangering transgender women by forcing them into cells withmen. In arrest situations, determining a person's gender will no longer beup to the arresting officer-a policy that would have prevented the incidentearlier this year in which Virginia DeSoto was held overnight in a men'ssection of the DC Jail.

Court bars new background checks for JPL workers U.S. judges seek more timeto study the regulation, which employees say would violate constitutionalrights.

By Jason SongLos Angeles Times Staff Writer
October 6, 2007

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday issued a temporaryinjunction blocking a federal government directive that would require newbackground checks for employees at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.A group of 28 JPL scientists to stop the investigations, which they saidamounted to a blank check for the federal government to look into such areasas their sexual orientation and consumer histories.

The employees had been facing the potential loss of their jobs unless theymet a Friday deadline to comply with the directive by filling outquestionnaires and signing a waiver allowing the investigations.A U.S. District Court had upheld the background checks Wednesday."This ruling shows we're not going to let hysterical fear and innuendoundermine the Constitution," said attorney Dan Stormer, who represented theJPL scientists.Calls made to JPL's La CaƱada Flintridge offices were not returned Friday.

But NASA Administrator Michael Griffin said in June that the backgroundchecks were part of a post-Sept. 11 security update and that the agency wasintent on carrying them out.In its order, the 9th Circuit judges wrote that they had not had time toreview all of the case material but noted that the JPL employees had raisedserious legal and constitutional issues and showed the "probability ofirreparable harm."The temporary order expires Oct. 12. Stormer said he expects the order to becontinued until Oct. 25, when opening briefs in the case are due.

CDC: Drug-resistant staph deaths may surpass AIDS toll

http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/conditions/10/16/mrsa.cdc.ap/index.html

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- More than 90,000 Americans get potentially deadlyinfections each year from a drug-resistant staph "superbug,"the government reported Tuesday in its first overall estimate of invasivedisease caused by the germ.Deaths tied to these infections may exceed those caused by AIDS, said onepublic health expert commenting on the new study. The report shows just howfar one form of the staph germ has spread beyond its traditional hospitalsetting. The overall incidence rate was about 32 invasive infections per 100,000people.

That's an "astounding" figure, said an editorial in Wednesday'sJournal of the American Medical Association, which published the study. Most drug-resistant staph cases are mild skin infections. But this studyfocused on invasive infections -- those that enter the bloodstream ordestroy flesh and can turn deadly.Researchers found that only about one-quarter involved hospitalizedpatients.

However, more than half were in the health care system -- peoplewho had recently had surgery or were on kidney dialysis, for example. Openwounds and exposure to medical equipment are major ways the bug spreads. In recent years, the resistant germ has become more common in hospitals andit has been spreading through prisons, gyms and locker rooms, and in poorurban neighborhoods.more.

Dania Beach goes on record in support of diversity
City hopes to attract visitors, residents with pro-diversity resolution

By Thomas Monnay
South Florida Sun-SentinelOctober 18, 2007

DANIA BEACHThe city is hoping to take advantage of anti-gay remarks by Fort LauderdaleMayor Jim Naugle to attract tourists and new residents.Leading the effort is gay activist Joe Van Eron, founder and president ofthe Dania Beach Tourism Council, who recently persuaded commissioners topass a resolution stating Dania Beach "prides itself on being a communitythat is inclusive and welcoming, rather than divisive.

"While Broward County, Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors already have taken asimilar position, Van Eron said Dania Beach couldn't remain silent becauseit has been a steady destination for gay travelers and up to 20 percent ofthe city's residents are homosexual.Roger Handevidt, chairman of the Rainbow Alliance, which represents a groupof gay-owned and gay-friendly hotels in the county, called the city'sresolution "a very enlightened move.

"While it may not necessarily sway visitors to make Dania Beach their primarydestination, Handevidt said, "what it will do is that there won't be a redflag saying: We don't want you."Van Eron, 58, said Naugle gave a "black eye" to Broward and itsmunicipalities by accusing gays of having sex in public bathrooms. He saidsome African-American groups have told him they had second thoughts aboutholding family reunions in the county because they interpreted Naugle'sremarks as a civil issue."Hate is hate and hate doesn't have any color,"

Van Eron said. The resolution, he added, "is not just about visitors. We want people tocome visit, live and work in Dania."Commissioner Anne Castro calls the resolution "a business decision" in linewith efforts to turn the city into a tourist destination for people from allsocial and economic backgrounds. The city, which was Broward's first municipality, was not always perceivedas so tolerant. In the former Tomato Capital of the World, blacks and whitesused to be separated by a railroad track, with each group restricted to itsown facilities. Things started easing in 1966, when voters elected anAfrican-American, Boisy Waters, to a commission seat, leading the way forother black politicians.more....

Letter to His Excellency Mehmet Ali SahinMinister of Justice, the Republic of Turkey

from Paula Ettelbrick
Executive Director IGLHRC

On behalf of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission(IGLHRC), I am writing to ask that the Government of Turkey respect andprotect the freedom of association and expression of all citizens, and takemeasures against the closure of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, travesty, andtranssexual (LGBT) group Lambda Istanbul.Denial of the right to free association effectively denies the right to freeexpression.

We urge you to consider the following arguments in yourposition:The right to free association falls within the scope of the politicalcriteria that Turkey is required to observe for accession to the EuropeanUnion, as established by the European Council in Copenhagen in 1993.

On thisbasis and upon insistence from the European Union, Romania eliminated fromits Penal Code the former art. 200 on same-sex relations, which hadexplicitly outlawed association and infringed upon free expression relatedto homosexuality.Freedom of association and expression are guaranteed under internationalhuman rights law.

LGBT people are fully included in the right to enjoyfreedom of association and expression -- discrimination on the basis ofsexual orientation or gender identity is prohibited (the Council of Europe¹sEuropean Convention of Human Rights, art. 11 and 10, and the United Nations¹International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights art. 22 and 19, bothratified by Turkey).

Irish Independent, 17 October 2007

Learning how to beat the new cyber bulliesKim BielenbergIt is a problem that is still frequently swept under the carpet in schools. But bullying affects tens of thousands of Irish schoolchildren every year -and there is little sign that it is in decline. As the Anti-Bullying Centre at Trinity College puts it, "The humiliation, fear, frustration, social isolation and loss of self-esteem which childrenexperience when bullied results in absenteeism from school, deterioratingschoolwork, illness, depression and sometimes suicide.

"The most recent Nationwide Study of Bullying in Irish Primary and SecondLevel Schools by the Anti-Bullying Centre indicates that 31pc of primarystudents and 16pc of secondary level of students have been bullied at sometime. The arrival of new technology has created new forms of bullying, andparents, teachers and education authorities are struggling to keep pace withthem. The current government Guidelines on Countering Bullying Behaviour in IrishSchools, were devised 14 years ago in the pre-internet, pre-mobile phone ageand are now outdated.

"The present guidelines were written in an era when no child had a mobilephone," said Stephen Minton, lecturer at the Anti-Bullying Centre in TrinityCollege Dublin. "The internet was not yet a mass medium. We are living in adifferent era."There is still not all that much solid research on cyber-bullying, butresearch indicates that one in 10 Irish children had received a nasty orthreatening text in the previous three months."Through the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE), which isfunded by the Department of Education and Science, a number ofnew-technology initiatives have been developed to deal with the issue ofinternet and mobile phone bullying.

Organization helps place gay foster kids
By AMY SHERMAN

Dexter Colston landed in the foster care system when he was about 13 afterhis mother rejected him because he is gay.He bounced through a couple dozen foster care facilities where adultscouldn't relate to him and other children could be brutal.''I ended up getting my front teeth knocked out,'' Colston recalled aboutone group home. ``I just didn't feel safe. Me and the other gay kids in thehouse carried knives.

''By the time Colston found Tom Herfort, a gay foster parent in FortLauderdale, he was a 17-year-old dropout addicted to drugs. He creditsHerfort with turning his life around and taking him to Narcotics Anonymous.''It's the best relationship I've had with anyone. I couldn't ask forbetter,'' said Colston, now 19 and living on his own in Orlando.

``It wasdefinitely a blessing having him become my parent.''Many gay foster teenagers never find a good home.Recognizing the gap in service, Broward's foster care agency, ChildNet, hascontracted with the National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP) to recruit andtrain foster parents to take in gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgenderfoster children.more....

NBC's Matt Lauer, Making the Least Of an Opportunity

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/16/AR2007101602494.html?hpid=news-col-blog

One thing, at least, was made painfully clear by Matt Lauer's interview withSen. Larry Craig on NBC last night: Matt Lauer is no Mike Wallace. Lauer wasanything but hard-hitting or confrontational with the Idaho Republican, arrested in June for alleged homosexual solicitation in a Minneapolisairport men's room. For Lauer, self-important co-host of NBC's "Today" show, the interview wasobviously seen as a potential career- and credibility-builder, but even whenhe did ask an arguably tough question, he essentially apologized for it. Heprefaced a question about whether the enator might be bisexual by saying toCraig, "You're going to have to forgive me for his."Lauer missed opportunities to present challenging questions to the disgraced daho senator.
