The Times Online: Woman artist gets death threats over gay Muslim photos
Matthew Campbell
January 6, 2008
THE Dutch were debating the limits of freedom of expression last week afteran artist who photographed gay men wearing masks of the prophet Muhammad wasforced into hiding and her work removed from a museum exhibit.
Speaking on the telephone from an unspecified location in the Netherlandslast week, the artist, an Iranian exile who goes by the pseudonym of SoorehHera, said she had been threatened with “execution”. She accused thedirector of the municipal museum in The Hague of cowardice for caving in toMuslim extremists.
Her story is a reminder of the tensions that have put the Netherlands andother European countries on the front line, sending dozens of peoplethreatened by extremists into hiding since 2004, when a Dutch film-maker wasmurdered on the street and his collaborator driven into exile.

Romney Tries to Rebound on Record
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
January 7, 2008
Filed at 3:35 a.m. ET
NASHUA, N.H. (AP) -- Mitt Romney has staked his political comeback in NewHampshire on the strength of his resume -- success in business, fixing atroubled Olympics, turning a budget deficit into a surplus in neighboringMassachusetts.
It's a late gamble that may prove a better bet than the policy positionsthat exposed him time and again to charges of flip-flopping, opportunism anda distinct lack of authenticity.
Romney, who had adopted the preferred GOP position on abortion rights, gayrights and embryonic stem cell research regardless of his past views onthose hot-button issues, decided all that paled into comparison to somethinghe did not have to finesse: his record.
On Friday night in Manchester, and then on Saturday in Derry and Sunday inNashua, he vigorously declared he was the change agent that voters say theywant.
''If you want to see change in Washington, it's going to take somebody goingthere who knows how to change things,'' he said Friday.

A-Paul-ed : Gay Libertarians face off over Ron Paul’s idealism and what itmeans in the fight for gay rights.
By John Barclay
An Advocate.com exclusive posted January 4, 2008
Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul aggressively opposes the Iraqwar, the war on drugs, the Patriot Act, and numerous actions of the FederalReserve. Unfortunately, many say he feels the same way about gay rights.
Paul is a Libertarian-leaning Texas congressman who has recentlyparty-crashed the neoconservative movement from within the GOP. Anaggressive antiestablishment speaker who is frequently cited as the mostInternet-savvy candidate, Paul has gained a proactive fan base that has madehim a leader in Web searches, YouTube views, and many Republican strawpolls. His grassroots supporters, many of them young technology aficionados, have launched what has become known as the “Ron Paul revolution” -- and theyhelped him pull in $6 million on December 16, the largest fund-raising dayfor any presidential candidate in U.S. history.
Paul’s cult-like following is largely the result of his proximity toLibertarian and Constitutionalist politics. He ran for president on theLibertarian Party ticket in 1988, winning little media attention but plentyof Libertarian street cred. As a GOP congressman, Paul has earned thenickname Dr. No because of his career as an obstetrician and his refusal tovote for anything not specifically sanctioned by the Constitution --including the Iraq war and the Patriot Act. Often portrayed as a Libertarianin Republican disguise, he still upholds the majority of the Libertarianplatform and has the support of many party members.
“Libertarians strongly oppose any government interfering in their personal, family and business decisions,” reads the Libertarian website. “Essentially,we believe all Americans should be free to live their lives and pursue theirinterests as they see fit as long as they do no harm to another. In anutshell, we are advocates for a smaller government, lower taxes and morefreedom.”

During Gardasil's first year of use, reports of girls fainting fromvaccinations climbed, but it's not clear whether the pain of the cervicalcancer vaccine was the reason for the reaction.
''This vaccine stings a lot,'' said Patsy Stinchfield, an infectious diseaseexpert at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, while speaking at arecent meeting of vaccination experts in Atlanta.
It sure does, according to 18-year-old Lauren Fant. She said other shotstend to hurt only at the moment of the needle stick, and not after thevaccine plunges in. ''It burns,'' said the college freshman from Marietta,Ga.

Donations to 'green' causes become popular to offset carbon emissions
By Doreen Hemlock
January 7, 2008
It's a familiar sign in South Florida nowadays: "This event is carbonneutral."
Organizers are donating money to compensate for the carbon dioxide emissionsthat their events produce, as participants travel by plane and car to attendand use electricity generated by fossil fuels.
They calculate the heat-trapping emissions and then pay to plant trees orfund "green" energy projects, such as wind farms. Those ventures eitherabsorb carbon dioxide or make energy without the greenhouse gases thatcontribute to global warming.
Individuals are turning to "carbon offsets" too, sometimes donating throughcompanies such as Delta Air Lines to offset their personal travel emissions.Enterprise Rent-A-Car even offers to match offset-donations from its clientsup to a total $1 million.
Efforts to go "carbon neutral" are spreading amid growing concern overclimate change. Emissions calculators are sprouting on the Internet, and newventures are starting to ensure donations reach their target. Practitionerssay it's easy and relatively cheap to offset at least some pollutants.

‘Ex-Gay’ Fails To Prevent Strengthening Of Hate Crime Law In New Jersey
January 5th, 2008
Despite the vigorous efforts of “ex-gay” activist Greg Quinlan, legislationto toughen the state’s hate crime and bullying laws advanced Thursday in theNew Jersey State Assembly. The proposed legislation also targets bullying inschools.
“It is the height of hypocrisy for ‘ex-gay’ activists to claim they ‘love’homosexuals and then fight against laws designed to thwart bullying inschools and stop hate crimes,” said TWO Executive Director Wayne Besen. “The‘ex-gay’ strategy is to make life miserable for gay people so they willdesire entering expensive ‘ex-gay’ programs. Perpetuating discrimination andfear is the only way these groups can survive.”
Quinlan recently moved to New Jersey from Ohio, where he lobbied extensivelyagainst equality. He is well known as an individual who exaggerates thealleged plight of ex-gays, going as far as claiming harassment, when nonehas occurred.
For nearly an hour, Quinlan led the fundamentalists in a failed attempt tohave the Assembly amend the bill to include people who identify themselvesas “ex-gay.” According to the Associated Press, Assemblyman Reed Gusciora,D-Mercer, at one point lost patience with the persistent conservatives and abrief shouting match ensued.
“Wherever Quinlan appears, civility seems to evaporate,” said Besen. “He isa magnet for madness and belligerent towards those who simply disagree withhis viewpoint.”
This is the latest example where “ex-gays” are using the political processto deny healthy and well-adjusted GLBT people equal rights.
“The ex-gay activists just can’t handle seeing happy and complete GLBTAmericans,” said Besen. “The existence of well-adjusted homosexuals livingrich and fulfilling lives is a direct threat to their business model.”

A GLBT Endorsement of Edwards
by Turkana
Mo Baxley, in Bay Windows, New England's largest GLBT newspaper :
Obama lost the support of many in the LGBT community when he featuredanti-gay entertainers at campaign events in South Carolina and then wentahead with the events even after being personally informed of theentertainers’ very public and virulently anti-gay remarks - making him theonly Democratic candidate to be protested by members of our community. WhileObama certainly has a pro-LGBT platform, in this circumstance, his actionsspeak louder than his well-intentioned words and we can not support acandidate that harmed the LGBT community in South Carolina in his quest tobecome president.
Edwards has worked hard since announcing his candidacy for President to earnour support. He was the first candidate to publicly release the candidatequestionnaire for the Human Rights Campaign; the first to publicly announcean LGBT steering committee; the first to release a comprehensive plan foraddressing the domestic HIV/AIDS crisis; and the first to visit a gay andlesbian community center. The dynamic Elizabeth Edwards also became thefirst spouse of a candidate to speak at a gay Pride weekend - the SanFrancisco Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club - an event at which shedeclared her support for marriage equality. Edwards has also proudly andpublicly dispatched high-profile LGBT supporters (like former NationalStonewall Democrats Executive Director Eric Stern) to talk to LGBT voters inkey early states like Iowa.
Edwards has not only demonstrated through these actions that our communityis a vital part of this campaign whose support he is working hard to earn, but he has also proven that he will stand up for our community as our nextpresident. When General Peter Pace (who was also then the Chairman of theJoint Chiefs of Staff) called gays and lesbians "immoral," Edwards was theonly candidate to immediately denounce and disagree with Pace’s attack onmillions of hard-working, tax-paying LGBT Americans. Neither Clinton norObama were able to do the same when initially asked to respond to Pace’shateful and very public remarks. Edwards spoke from his heart in defendingour community from this vicious attack and he will do the same as ourpresident.
Although I am not gay, his shocking use of homophobic bigot Donnie McClurkinto raise money and win votes in South Carolina redefined my understanding ofSenator Obama.☼ It was deplorable and indefensible. As Matt, at thepro-Edwards InterstateQ site, explains:
If Obama wins the presidency the LGBT community is in for four (and possiblyeight) years of being subjected to a dangerously employed “big tent”strategy that places an oppressed group of citizens at the same table astheir oppressors. Obama’s presidency would see James Dobson, Pat Robertson,Donnie McClurkin and other anti-gay leaders sitting down with LGBT communityleaders telling them how much they are evil and going to hell while Obamasits back and says, “We should work together and hope for change.”

Ireland: Gay partnership law may recognise foreign unions
Carl O'Brien, Social Affairs Correspondent
Sat, Jan 05, 2008
The Government's planned civil partnership scheme for gay and lesbiancouples is likely to provide for the automatic legal recognition of civilunions or weddings in certain other countries, it has emerged.
Already, dozens of gay and lesbian couples are travelling to countries suchas Canada and the UK to wed or obtain civil partnerships, in the hope theirunions will be recognised in Irish law shortly.
Senior sources say that civil unions or weddings will have the same legalrecognition as new civil partnerships in Ireland, as long as they meet anumber of conditions.Such a provision is contained in civil partnershiplegislation in the UK, which recognises unions in almost 20 countries, including the US, Canada and France.
Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan has said the heads of a Bill that wouldallow for civil partnerships for same-sex couples will be published beforethe summer.

Lesbian and gay couples are adopting in Israel.
Solid partnerships and responsible parenting are boosting Israeli familylife.
Sat, 01/05/2008 - 4:47pm by Community Editor
According to Israel's daily newspaper - Haaretz - Welfare Minister YitzhakHerzog (pictured) will promote a policy that would allow gay and lesbiancouples to adopt children. Until now, those in same-sex relationships havebeen allowed to adopt their partner’s biological children, or to have anadoption registered in Israel after it was performed abroad. Couples havenot been allowed to adopt a child who was not born to one of the twopartners.
Israeli rabbi and attorney Gilad Kariv agrees with the decision, and says:
"Removing the obstacles faced by same-sex couples who wish to adopt anIsraeli child constitutes a clear and unequivocal expression of the State’srecognition that the child’s good would not be undermined because he or shehave same-sex parents, and that this good hinges on, first and foremost, thequality of family life and the relationships within it."
According to sources in the Welfare Ministry, four same-sex couples haveasked to adopt a child over the past several months. Several other coupleshave applied to have one partner adopt the other’s children.

Registrar threatens legal action against council over civil partnerships
By staff writers
7 Jan 2008
A marriage registrar has vowed to make a legal challenge to the acceptanceof civil partnership ceremonies, claiming that she objects to them onreligious grounds and should therefore be exempt from having to performthem.
The woman, who has not been named, is described as "a devout Christian". Sheis taking action against Islington Council through an employment tribunal, after her stance escalated into a full-scale dispute with her employers.
Over 600 lesbian and gay couples have had their life partnershipssolemnified in ceremonies in the North London borough since the law changedin 2005. However, the unnamed registrar has refused to take any part inthem, reports This Is London news site.
The case is sure to be used in the continuing battle between opponents ofequal rights, many of them conservative Christians, and civil and gay rightscampaigners.
Equalities activists say that 'conscience' exemptions at work should bepermitted, but should never be allowed to take priority over public accessto services for others or the dignity of clients. Those with an objection tocivil partnerships have the option of not working for agencies supportingthem, they point out.

LGBT Educators' Retreat
Provincetown: January 25 to 27
By Kahrin Deines
January 6th, 2008
Same-sex marriage rights may remain contested in most of the Americanstates, but there are many educators who are starting to make a stand forthe right to at least be out in their schools.
And they are not just doing it for themselves. As their openness changesminds, it also becomes a lot less likely young members of the LGBT communitywill face the harassment that has often taken place in schools.
Between January 25 and 27, a number of LGBT educators, and their straightsupporters, will gather in Provincetown for a retreat to talk about justthese issues. The retreat has been organized by the Boston branch of theGay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), which is anorganization that works to create safer schools for children of all sexualorientations and gender identities.
Each year, Boston GLSEN puts together a retreat in January that gives LGBTeducators the opportunity to share their experiences of being out, or in thecloset, with others who are in the same position.
In addition to the camaraderie, the retreat also offers a number ofworkshops that deal with how to be leaders for change in their schools.

Although Michael Davis had always had a very supportive family, he kept a
big secret.
While he was openly gay at school and in a committed relationship, he hidthis from his family. It was a secret he didn't want to keep forever, so hemade the decision that many students face: to come out to his parents.
"For the first time, I was in a very comfortable relationship and I stronglybelieved, and still do, that we will be together for a long period of time,"said the senior interpersonal communications major. "I was very hesitanttoward the beginning about telling my parents, but I wanted to be directwith them."
He told a few good friends who assured him that they still valued hisfriendship, but he still remained hesitant to tell his family.
"I grew up knowing that they have always wanted the best for me, even whenthings are in a crunch," Davis said. "[My mom] taught me the importantvalues of never judging people and treating others the way that I would liketo be treated."

Student not giving up effort to wear anti-gay T-shirt
Neuqua teen and his team are appealing
By Rob Olmstead | Daily Herald Staff
Published: 1/4/2008 12:25 AM
A Neuqua Valley High School sophomore and his lawyers will appeal a federaljudge's ruling that prohibits him from wearing a T-shirt at school thatreads "Be Happy, Not Gay."
Alexander Nuxoll of Bolingbrook had sought a temporary injunction allowinghim to wear the shirt this April after the Naperville school made anotherstudent, Heidi Zamecnik, edit the same message two years ago.
School administrators say they have a policy against derogatory language.
They say Nuxoll can wear a shirt that says "Be Happy, Be Straight" becauseit doesn't degrade another group, but "not gay" crosses the line.
Nate Kellum, senior counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, the grouprepresenting Nuxoll, said Thursday the group will appeal the ruling and askfor an expedited decision in hopes Nuxoll can wear the shirt in time forthis year's "Day of Silence."
The Day of Silence is a day on which students around the nation wearT-shirts and remain silent to show support for gays and lesbians. It iscountered the next day by the "Day of Truth" by students who opposehomosexuality.

A federal judge’s last-minute injunction kept Oregon’s domestic partnershiplaw from taking effect, leaving hundreds of couples feeling as though theyhad been stood up at the altar. The law, approved by the 2007 Legislature, would have allowed same-sex couples to enter agreements providing rights andresponsibilities similar to but lesser than those of a marriage contract.
The civil rights of gays and lesbians, however, were not at issue inDistrict Judge Michael Mosman’s Portland courtroom on Dec. 28. At issue wasthe question of whether voters’ petition rights are equivalent to theirvoting rights. This question needs to be settled once and for all, but it’splain that voting rights are both different and superior. Opponents of thedomestic partnership law attempted to gather enough petition signatures torefer it to a vote later this year. They fell 96 short of the 55,179 validsignatures needed. Led by the Arizona-based Alliance Defense Fund, opponentssued 12 county elections officers, claiming that verification techniquesprescribed by Secretary of State Bill Bradbury’s office are unfair.

Couple conceives child through anonymous sperm donation, egg from one womanimplanted in partner. Interior Ministry only recognizes birth mother aschild’s parent. Couple demands joint recognition
Whose child is this, really? A lesbian couple, who together conceived achild six months ago, is now demanding that the Interior Ministry jointlyregister them as the child’s biological parents, rather than having toundergo an adoption process as has been the case with same- sex couples todate. The Ramat Gan Family Court has set precedent for such a request, byallowing one of the partners to act as a surrogate for the other, and nowthe couple also wants formal recognition as their son’s biological parents.
The two women have lived together for over 10 years, and were even marriedby a Conservative rabbi three years ago, indicating their emotional andfiscal commitment to one another. They also entered into a life partnershipagreement signed by a notary public two years ago, officially anchoringtheir status as committed, life-long partners.

In the original tale, which appeared in Book 9 of Ovid's "Metamorphoses,"Iphis is a girl whose mother raises her as a boy to prevent her from beingput to death. Iphis eventually gets engaged to her childhood friend Ianthe, also a girl, but knows that a marriage between two females is impossible.
Iphis' mother prays to the god Isis, who changes Iphis into a boy, and thelovers marry and live happily ever after. Now, as chairman of the state's leading gay rights organization, DavidWilson says he is determined to make the case to his own community.
MassEquality, a gay marriage advocacy coalition, has launched a statewidepush to increase support for its cause among black residents ofMassachusetts. The effort is a priority for Wilson, an African-American whowas named the group's chairman in October. He knows it will be a challenge.
Many black people in Massachusetts and across the country have reactedunsympathetically to the gay rights movement, especially to efforts by gayrights advocates to link the fight for marriage rights to the civil rightsmovement. Gay rights advocates say with the battle against a constitutionalamendment that would have banned gay marriage in the state now behind them, they are beginning a concerted effort to speak directly to the blackcommunity, hoping the approach can change some minds in the Bay State andserve as a national model for outreach to minorities.
