The market is re-evaluating and re-pricing every asset in the world, without mercy. It is going to do whatever it's going to do - whichever way greed and fear tug it.

-Sarah Six-Pack is getting a bit stale
LEONARD PITTS JR.
Maybe you remember Dave. It was a 1993 movie starring Kevin Kline as Dave Kovic, an everyday guy who happens to be a dead ringer for the president. When the chief executive is stricken, his aides secretly recruit Dave to fill in for him. Problem is, Dave quickly begins to lose himself in the role. There's a wonderful scene where, trying to find money in the federal budget to fund a homeless shelter, Dave turns to his friend Murray, an accountant, for help. [...] The ''g'' droppin', moose shootin', eye-winkin' hockey mom has plenty of antecedents. But there's a difference. Those antecedents were smart, wonkish people pretending to be one of us. Sarah Palin is one of us. And by ''us,'' I don't mean you, necessarily, or me. I mean the lowest common denominator us, the us of myth and narrative, the us of simple mind, the reactionary, ill-informed, impatient with complexity, utterly shallow us.

ACORN's response to Sen. McCain's smear
ACORN President Maude Hurd released the following statement today in response to the McCain campaign's new ad claiming that, among other things, ACORN is responsible for the mortgage crisis: "For almost a decade, ACORN, a community organization of 400,000 families in neighborhoods across the country, has been fighting against the predatory lending practices that have robbed our members of their homes, destabilized neighborhoods, and roiled the global economy. "In his newest ad, John McCain's campaign bizarrely claims that 'ACORN forced banks to issue risky home loans, the same types of loans that caused the financial crisis we're in today.' Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, ACORN has worked successfully to help working class families get good home loans on fair terms from legitimate banks and has fought vigorously against predatory lenders who have ripped off families in our communities. These predatory loans caused the crisis.

- American Legal Conservatives Oppose the Citation of Foreign Law, But What
About the Hallowed Practice of Citing to Blackstone?
It is an article of faith among legal conservatives that American courts should not cite foreign sources of law. Foreign courts, these conservatives argue, just don't get it, and we don't need their cosmopolitan ideas corrupting the minds of our judges on subjects like homosexuality or the death penalty. The debate over the use of foreign law had been mostly confined to law reviews and legal blogs. Recently, however, it spilled into the mainstream media with a New York Times article about the declining international influence of U.S. Supreme Court rulings. One reason for this sinking global esteem, according to the Times: our Justices' own disdain for the work of their foreign colleagues.

-US lawmaker slams McCain camp for stoking hatred
Democratic lawmaker John Lewis on Saturday said Republican White House contender John McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin were "sowing the seeds of hatred and division" with incendiary rhetoric against rival Barack Obama. "As public figures with the power to influence and persuade, Senator McCain and (Alaska) Governor Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all," Lewis said in a statement on Politico.com a day after McCain tried to tone down his campaign's attacks against his rival.

-The right bashes ties of Obama, ACORN
ACORN, whose voter- registration drive produced two dozen forms flagged as potentially fraudulent in Brevard County, says it is cooperating with a probe of five cases it brought to authorities' attention.

-Obama opens 6-point lead over McCain
Democrat Barack Obama has opened a 6-point lead over Republican rival John McCain in the U.S. presidential race, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released on Sunday. Obama leads McCain by 49 percent to 43 percent among likely U.S. voters in the latest four-day tracking poll, his widest lead since the poll was started on Tuesday. It was up from a 4-point lead on Saturday. The poll has a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.

-10 years in, MoveOn gaining in strength
Five days after Senator John McCain named Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate, co-workers Quinn Latimer and Lyra Kilston e-mailed 40 female friends, inviting them to outline the reasons they were upset with his choice. It elicited such a huge response - from friends of friends and utter strangers - that they created a blog called Women Against Sarah Palin. In less than a month, it has become one of the largest hubs of online opposition to Palin, receiving more than 160,000 e-mails.
