Broward County may lower your taxes, but not by much

By Scott Wyman
South Florida Sun-Sentinel

September 20, 2006

The price of heftier tax relief for Broward County homeowners proved toodaunting Tuesday for county commissioners when they saw such a step wouldmean major cuts in services to the neediest residents.

Commissioners wanted to trim the proposed $3.2 billion budget for countygovernment operations by $40 million after public outcry over skyrocketingproperty assessments. The initial budget unveiled this summer called forproperty tax collections to increase by 7 percent.

Saving $40 million would have required an across-the-board cut in libraryhours, less bus service and the end to a county program to help singlemothers collect child support payments. It also would have meant a rollbackin aid to cities to redevelop blighted areas and a reduction in assistanceto help families on the verge of becoming homeless.

Commissioners settled on numerous smaller cuts that likely amount to lessthan half the savings they wanted to find. Some libraries in Broward likelywill close earlier and regional parks will no longer be open on Mondaymornings

Palm Beach School District payroll errors may take weeks to fix

By Marc Freeman

September 20, 2006

It was a simple goal: The Palm Beach County School District sought to switchto a new $18 million computer software system to run its business operationsmore efficiently.

Instead, it became a full-blown public relations crisis with employeeresignations, bus driver protests, shortchanged teachers and an estimatethat it could cost at least $1.5 million in public money to fix the mess.

Despite a year of planning and preparation, the district encountered seriousand unexpected payroll problems almost immediately after switching to itsPeopleSoft network in early July, officials say.
