Christian Conservatives Look to Re-energize Base
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 - Openly anxious about grass-roots disaffection from the Republican Party, conservative Christian organizers are reaching for ways to turn out voters this November, including arguing that recognizing same-sex marriage could also limit religious freedom.

Just two years after many conservative Christians exulted that their voter turnout efforts had pushed President Bush to re-election, organizers say their constituents are disengaged.

"There is disillusionment out there with Republicans," said James C. Dobson, founder of the conservative Christian broadcaster Focus on the Family and the most influential voice in the movement. "That worries me greatly."

At an election-season Values Voters Summit held here by the allied Family Research Council, some conservatives debated whether "maybe losing the Republican majority would teach us a lesson and get our movement back on track," in the words of Representative Mike Pence, Republican of Indiana.

"Depression, Sex Addiction Linked in Gay Men: Report"

Washington Blade (09.15.06):: Ryan Lee

An analysis of depression among gay men and other populations found gay menare more likely to experience depression and milder mood disorders, which wereassociated with HIV risk. The New York-based Medius Institute for Gay Men'sHealth survey, authored by founder and Executive Director Spencer Cox, founddepressed gay men were more likely to engage in risk-taking activity such asunprotected sex and drug use. The report analyzed 300 different studies andinterviewed service providers and mental health and sex researchers.

"It would be an oversimplification to say that depression 'causes' the riskybehavior," said the report, "Living on the Edge: Gay Men, Depression & RiskTaking." "Instead, it appears that in gay men, multiple epidemics - such asdepression, drug abuse, violence, childhood sexual abuse, and HIV - interactto increase risk for one another." Depression is a "background riskmodulator"

By Antigone Barton

HOLLYWOOD - Speaking together to an audience for the first time, thescientists who identified the virus that leads to AIDS hailed scientificadvances that have helped doctors treat the disease, but said not nearlyenough has been learned to stem the spread of the epidemic.

"Not enough to cure, not enough to educate, not enough to prevent," said LucMontagnier, co-discoverer in 1983 of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

With Dr. Robert Gallo, he described obstacles slowing the development of apreventive vaccine, during the third day of the United States Conference onAIDS.

That the virus integrates itself into an infected person's cells "makes thechallenges for a vaccine immense," Gallo said.

But, both agreed, recent developments toward a vaccine that would keep thevirus from infiltrating cells have been promising and important.

Margaret Cho Heads To Canada To Vent About U.S. Politics

by Elianna Lev, Canadian Press

(Vancouver, British Columbia) Something is bugging comedian Margaret Cho. And she's headed north of the border to get it off her chest.

``I'm very frustrated with the system that's happening in America right now,'' said Cho, who performed Friday at Vancouver's ComedyFest.

``I'm very frustrated with the Iraq war and with the (President George W.) Bush administration. And I'm here to complain about it, in Canada.''

Cho joins a chorus of celebrities who have been voicing their displeasure with the current U.S. government. She has never been shy about airing her views.

The comedian's last two shows, ``State of Emergency'' and ``Assassin,'' focused almost entirely on her frustration with U.S. politics.

``Everybody is just so embarrassed and it's really funny,'' she said in a recent telephone interview from Los Angeles.

Tutu says church stand on gay priests made him ashamed to be Anglican

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, in the first authorized biography of the Nobel peace laureate, said he was ashamed of his Anglican church's conservative position that rejected gay priests. In the book, Rabble-rouser for Peace, by his former press secretary John Allen, Tutu also criticized the last apartheid president, F.W. de Klerk, for not accepting accountability for apartheid atrocities. He said the failure caused him to regret having nominated de Klerk, along with Nelson Mandela, for their 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.

Excerpts from the book were scheduled to be appear in South Africa on Friday, and the biography was scheduled for release in time for Tutu's 75th birthday on October 7. The retired archbishop was critical of Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams for bowing on the gay priest issue to conservative elements, particularly African bishops, in the 77 million-member Anglican Church, which includes Episcopalians in the United States.

In a 1998 letter to Williams's predecessor, Archbishop George Carey, Tutu wrote he was "ashamed to be Anglican." It came after the Lambeth Conference of Bishops rejected the ordination of practicing homosexuals, saying their sexual relations were "incompatible with scripture."
