Associated Press
TAMPA -- The Sarasota Herald-Tribune's pursuit of a Roman Catholic priestwho admitted an inappropriate relationship with a disgraced congressman 40years ago took on the trappings of the Watergate investigation with a sourceagreeing to a code that would confirm information.
The newspaper reported Thursday that sources close to former U.S. Rep. MarkFoley's family said Foley had "one sexual encounter that took place whenFoley was 12 or 13." The paper did not disclose the identity of its sources.
Matthew Doig, one of the reporters who broke the story, said Thursday thatthe source would not name the priest, but agreed to confirm the name if thereporters could find the man themselves. He and colleague Maurice Tammanused church records and the Internet to identify about half a dozen priestswho might have had contact with Foley decades ago when he attended SacredHeart Catholic Church.

Despite Differences, Evangelicals Support Crist
By MATT SEDENSKY
The Associated Press
MIAMI -- Republican Charlie Crist supports embryonic stem cell research, ishands-off on gay civil unions and has no aspirations of changing abortionlaws.
He hopes that still makes him the darling of conservative Christians.
Despite the gubernatorial candidate's moderate social stance, Crist showssigns of strong support among the type of religious voters seen as the GOP'score. Experts say the question is not whether conservative Christians willcast their votes for Crist. It's whether they'll cast them at all.
"You're talking about the core of the party, and if they're not excited it'sunclear that they'll mobilize," said Kenneth Wald, a University of Floridaprofessor who has written numerous books on politics and religion.

The Miami Herald recommends
FOR U.S. HOUSE
Voters nationwide have such a low opinion of Congress these days that theRepublican majority is threatened in both chambers. Yet all politics, ultimately, is local; and people often base their vote on what theirlawmaker has done for them. In these races, four House incumbents drew onlytoken opposition. All four should be returned to office.
DISTRICT 17
Democrat Kendrick B. Meek won the primary with nearly 90 percent of thevote. He faces only a write-in option on the ballot. Rep. Meek, 40, fightshard for issues vital to this district. He is tireless, creative and willingto work across party lines. For U.S. House District 17, The Miami Heraldrecommends KENDRICK B. MEEK.
DISTRICT 18
Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is challenged by Democrat David ''Big Dave''Patlak, a 51-year-old retired U.S. Coast Guard officer. Rep. Ros-Lehtinen,54, has represented this district for 17 years. She's in line to chair theHouse International Relations Committee, a powerful post, if the GOP retainsits majority. She strongly supports Israel, wants a free Cuba and promotessensible immigration policies. She provides strong constituent service. ForU.S. House District 18, The Miami Herald recommends ILEANA ROS-LEHTINEN.

Former West Palm commissioner gets 18 months in prison for fraud
By Vanessa Blum
South Florida Sun-Sentinel
October 20, 2006
Ray Liberti's voice trembled as he apologized to his family and supporters.
He told the federal judge about to impose his punishment that he had greatrespect for the law and would never falter again.
"It's very strange being here," the former West Palm Beach city commissionermurmured.
What comes next -- 18 months in a federal prison -- is likely to feel evenmore foreign to Liberti, a lifelong politician who spent 14 years as a staterepresentative.
Before being led out of the Fort Lauderdale federal courtroom, Liberti gavea long tearful hug to his two grown daughters, holding one in each arm.
Next came their mother, Liberti's ex-wife.
"Take care of the kids," he whispered.

In God's Name
Ministry's Medical Program Is Not Regulated
By DIANA B. HENRIQUES
It looks like a business and, in many ways, acts like one. But it is beyondthe reach of most of the rules and government oversight that apply tobusinesses - because it is a church mission.
This is the "medical bill sharing ministry" known as Christian CareMinistry, based in Melbourne, Fla., the largest of a handful of similarministries around the country.
E. John Reinhold, who once worked with the Campus Crusade for Christ and isnow the ministry's chairman, explains the concept simply: "You add up allthe medical bills and divide by the number of sharing households. Everybodykicks in and you pay the bills."
Every month, in roughly 19,000 households across the country, ministrymembers - who must be observant Christians with recommendations from theirpastors - write a check to Christian Care Ministry. The amount depends ontheir family's size and how much of their medical bills they are willing topay out of their own pocket.
