Who Has Charlie's Ear?
By WILLIAM MARCH The Tampa Tribune

Published: Nov 13, 2006

As he assumes the governor's office, Charlie Crist brings an informalkitchen Cabinet of advisers to whom he turns for advice on policy andstrategy. Some are longtime friends, some are professional associates andsome are relatives. No. 1 on the list, Crist says, is his father, Charles J.Crist Sr. But all of them shape the thinking of a man who, most closeassociates say, is guided by his instincts and by input from people hetrusts.

GEORGE LeMIEUX

He has known Crist about 10 years and is his right-hand man. A BrowardCounty native with a Georgetown University law degree, LeMieux ranunsuccessfully for state House and became Republican chairman in heavilyDemocratic Broward. He has served Crist as No. 2 in the attorney general'soffice and as campaign chief. He is likely to be chief of staff.

ISSUE: County puts reuse plan on hold.

Whew, that was a close one. Broward County came "this" close to making adecision that could have had serious environmental consequences. It's goodto see that wiser heads prevailed.

The county had considered a plan to lower pollution standards so treatedwastewater could be dumped into canals to help replenish drinking watersupplies. The idea was to accommodate growth without tapping into the supplyfrom the Everglades.

GOVERNOR'S RACE

'Maestro' fashioned Crist's win
Charlie Crist's campaign manager, George LeMieux, has emerged as apolitical power. LeMieux made the decision to keep Crist away from PresidentBush late in the campaign.

BY MARY ELLEN KLAS AND BETH REINHARD
meklas@MiamiHerald.com

Of all the decisions Charlie Crist made in his campaign for governor, one late in the game got the most attention: On the day before the election,Crist shunned an appearance with President Bush in Pensacola.

White House strategist Karl Rove made fun of Crist, and thecandidate's no-show was the talk of cable TV.

But the day after the election, it was clear that Crist had made theright call. He was the governor-elect of Florida, while Bush was reelingfrom the GOP's loss of power.

STEM CELL RESEARCH
Work against hope, and see a backlash

By Bernard Siegel

November 13, 2006

The compelling political commercials of Michael J. Fox and the ham-fisted,mean-spirited response by Rush Limbaugh crystallized into one of those "stemcell moments," when the public becomes outraged at the self-defeatingtactics of the opponents to embryonic stem cell research.

If the midterm election has taught us anything, it has taught us that theelectorate understands the stakes with this public health issue. If youdoubt that, ask any candidate who lost a bid for office while opposing stemcell research. It blossomed into an important wedge issue.
