-How to Close Guantanamo
Among Barack Obama's many campaign promises, the one whose fulfillment is anticipated most around the world is the closing of the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Not surprisingly, public debate has begun on how to extract the United States from this legal and security quagmire. Sound recommendations include the need for a fresh review of all detainee files followed by a determination of who can be released and who must be brought to justice.

-AN INTERROGATOR SPEAKS
I'm Still Tortured by What I Saw in Iraq
I should have felt triumphant when I returned from Iraq in August 2006. Instead, I was worried and exhausted. My team of interrogators had successfully hunted down one of the most notorious mass murderers of our generation, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq and the mastermind of the campaign of suicide bombings that had helped plunge Iraq into civil war. But instead of celebrating our success, my mind was consumed with the unfinished business of our mission: fixing the deeply flawed, ineffective and un-American way the U.S. military conducts interrogations in Iraq. I'm still alarmed about that today.

-Preemptive Pardons
Mr. Bush should resist any temptation to clear officials who devised his anti-terrorism strategy.

-Mr. Irrelevant: Bush leaving mark with 'midnight' laws
Jobless numbers are skyrocketing, housing sales are at their lowest point in a half century, the stock market is destabilized, and the auto industry has joined the banking industry in teetering on the brink of collapse. Yet, President Bush has been absent from discussions about the economy and silent on the specifics of his own administration's bailout. During this crisis, the White House has offered no Rooseveltian "fireside chat" to calm a jittery public. There has been no Lincoln-esque vision for what lies beyond the storm nor, shockingly, even a Clintonian show of "feeling our pain."

-Overstressed parents, kids need help
By LEONARD PITTS JR.
lpitts@miamiherald.com
At one level, it sounds like a very bad joke. In September, a safe-haven law took effect in the state of Nebraska allowing parents to leave their children at hospitals without fear of prosecution. This, as a means of saving the lives of unwanted newborns who would otherwise be left in garbage heaps and motel rooms or simply murdered outright. Nebraska was the last state in the union to pass such a law and unlike the other 49 states, it did not limit the ages of children that could be legally abandoned. You've heard what happened next: 36 kids have since been left at Nebraska hospitals. Most were older than 11. Some had severe mental and behavioral problems. Some had been transported hundreds of miles across the country by parents desperate to be rid of them.A few days ago, Nebraska amended its law. It now requires that abandoned children be less than 30 days old.
