MY FATHER

My earliest memory of interacting with my father is of the moment when I told him, after the last practice before the first game, that I did not want to be on the little league football team after all. I can’t recall what made me think I wanted to do that in the first place, but after two or three practices that seemed to consist of nothing but having oafs pound me on the helmet and shoulder pads, I had had enough. My father threw a screaming temper tantrum, which I only realized some 30-odd years later, traumatized me and, I think, soured my relationship with him until I was middle-aged.

Singapore's gay community holds first-ever rally

SINGAPORE -- The gay community in tightly controlled Singapore held its first-ever rally Saturday, taking advantage of looser laws on public gatherings to call for equality. About 2,500 participants wore pink clothing, played music and sang songs at a park known as Speaker's Corner, said organizer Pink Dot, which represents Singapore's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents.

MOSCOW -- Riot police violently broke up several gay rights demonstrations in Moscow on Saturday, hauling away scores of protesters hours before the Russian capital hosted a major international pop music competition. City officials had warned they would not tolerate marches or rallies supporting the rights of gays and lesbians. Activists had targeted Moscow, which was holding the finals of the Eurovision song contest on Saturday, to press their claims that Russia officially sanctions homophobia.

Exemption for Religious Foes Of Gay Marriage Debated
As a growing number of states legalize same-sex marriage, there is growing attention on exemptions for religious institutions and individuals who find the concept morally objectionable and religiously untenable. This week, New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch (D) said he would sign legislation to make his state the sixth to legalize gay marriage if the legislature ensured religious protections. Vermont and Connecticut have enacted laws that exempt clergy from performing same-sex marriages and give religious groups the right to refuse their facilities for same-sex marriage celebrations and allow them to refuse to provide insurance benefits to same-sex partners.

You couldn't ask for a more thorough pulse-taking than you get in "Younger Than Jesus," the show now filling all four floors of the New Museum's stylish home on the Bowery. It presents 124 works by 50 artists, all 33 or younger, from 25 countries, selected from a 500-name shortlist submitted by an international panel of experts. It's the first in a planned series of triennials the museum calls "The Generational."

3 fired, 2 resign after kids shocked in Florida prisons
The Associated Press
Demonstrations at three Florida prisons where more than 40 children were shocked with stun guns have led to the dismissal of three employees and the resignation of two others, the Department of Corrections said Friday. The incidents took place on April 23, national "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day." As part of demonstrations at two prisons, children held hands in a circle, and one was shocked with the stun gun, passing the shock around the circle. At another prison, children were shocked individually.

Thank you for David Crary's May 9 article on five years of marriage equality for same-sex couples in Massachusetts.
As we prepare to celebrate our fifth anniversary of the freedom to marry on May 17, articles like this deliver good news: Marriage for same-sex couples in Massachusetts has been good for families, good for communities and good for kids. I was disappointed, however, that the reporter failed to note that, in our state, leaders of faith who support marriage rights for all played a key and critical role in defending our right to marry. The Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry (RCFM) worked tirelessly to contact, educate and include both clergy and lay persons of faith in the long fight to defeat a series of anti-marriage proposals in our legislature. The RCFM engaged in grass-roots organizing that resulted in 1,100 clergy signing a statement of support, more than 3,000 Roman Catholic lay people signing a statement of support and extensive lobbying by clergy and lay people of faith. Moreover, RCFM was instrumental in engaging and supporting the prominent religious leaders who spoke out publicly. The reporter quoted only religious leaders who oppose the right of same-sex couples to marry, as if they were and are the only religious voices to be heard in Massachusetts. Meetings offer men the opportunity to meet outside of usual social setting

The Gay Men Empowerment Series, or GMEP, is a series of seminars and discussions to explore the “best of being gay.” The Gay Men Empowerment Series began in 2002 when a group of Broward County therapists discussed they were getting frequent requests from gay men as to why there wasn’t an alternative setting for men to meet each other outside of the usual bar setting. These therapists organized the Gay Male Empowerment Group to respond to those needs with programs and seminars, many of which are self-improvement, along with other activities to fill the need.

I was late, as usual. It was the second Monday of some month in 1996. The second Monday meant we weren’t just having a regular sorority meeting, we were having a formal meeting. Which had a lot of rituals. Which I was about to interrupt. I was a sophomore at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. The first fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, was founded at the College in 1776, making William and Mary the birthplace of the Greek system in America. But I wasn’t thinking about that as I slunk in late to formal meeting. I was just trying not to get caught.

SC House nixes mention of gays in date-abuse bill

South Carolina lawmakers want to prevent violence in teen relationships but won’t allow a new school program aimed at curbing such abuse to mention gay and lesbian partnerships. State representatives voted overwhelmingly Thursday to bar any mention of homosexual relationships in the new program for middle and high school students. The move was pushed by lawmakers who said they don’t want schools teaching about gay relationships and said they doubt those partnerships have high levels of abuse.

In a 75 to 25 vote today, the House approved a bill that will require the state’s school districts to distribute information to parents and students about the dangers of abusive teen relationships. It reads simply: “Moscow is not Sodom.” As a cold wind whips through the Russian capital’s Pushkinskaya square, activists hand out leaflets showing two men kissing, crossed out in angry red ink with the slogan: “Say no to spiritual terrorism.” The demonstrators’ ire is directed at an unlikely target – the 54th Eurovision Song contest. Russia is hosting the 2009 event on Saturday following the victory last year in Serbia of the mullet-haired Russian singer Dima Bilan. More than 80 of the world's 195 nations criminalize gay sex, and it is punishable by death in 10 -- Afghanistan, Iran, Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. In Pakistan and the UAE, however, the criminal code, which does not punish sodomy with death, tends to take precedence over the equally legal Shariah law, which does punish sodomy with death. In Somalia, Shariah law is in force in portions of the nation. Somalia presently has no national government. In Afghanistan, the penal code does not punish sodomy with death, but Shariah does -- and is in force in much of the country. Nigeria has the Shariah death penalty for gay sex in northern provinces only, where Shariah takes precedence over federal law and people have been sentenced to death for gay sex, though executions apparently have not been carried out. The remaining five nations have an unambiguous national death penalty for sodomy -- Iran, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen.
