MY FATHER
BY WILLIAM B. TURNER
My earliest memory of interacting with my father is of the moment when I told him, after the last practice before the first game, that I did not want to be on the little league football team after all. I can’t recall what made me think I wanted to do that in the first place, but after two or three practices that seemed to consist of nothing but having oafs pound me on the helmet and shoulder pads, I had had enough. My father threw a screaming temper tantrum, which I only realized some 30-odd years later, traumatized me and, I think, soured my relationship with him until I was middle-aged.

Singapore's gay community holds first-ever rally
The Associated Press
SINGAPORE -- The gay community in tightly controlled Singapore held its first-ever rally Saturday, taking advantage of looser laws on public gatherings to call for equality. About 2,500 participants wore pink clothing, played music and sang songs at a park known as Speaker's Corner, said organizer Pink Dot, which represents Singapore's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents.

Moscow police violently break up gay pride rally
By DAVID NOWAK
The Associated Press
MOSCOW -- Riot police violently broke up several gay rights demonstrations in Moscow on Saturday, hauling away scores of protesters hours before the Russian capital hosted a major international pop music competition. City officials had warned they would not tolerate marches or rallies supporting the rights of gays and lesbians. Activists had targeted Moscow, which was holding the finals of the Eurovision song contest on Saturday, to press their claims that Russia officially sanctions homophobia.

Exemption for Religious Foes Of Gay Marriage Debated
As a growing number of states legalize same-sex marriage, there is growing attention on exemptions for religious institutions and individuals who find the concept morally objectionable and religiously untenable. This week, New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch (D) said he would sign legislation to make his state the sixth to legalize gay marriage if the legislature ensured religious protections. Vermont and Connecticut have enacted laws that exempt clergy from performing same-sex marriages and give religious groups the right to refuse their facilities for same-sex marriage celebrations and allow them to refuse to provide insurance benefits to same-sex partners.

Who Is a Real Catholic?
By David Gibson
All you need to know to diagnose the state of the Catholic Church in America today is that Pope Benedict XVI -- who has a knack for ticking off Muslims and Jews -- spent the past week wandering the Middle East, yet Catholics here barely noticed. They were too busy fighting over Barack Obama's appearance as commencement speaker at Notre Dame or arguing about the fate of a popular Miami priest known as "Father Oprah," who was caught on camera sharing a seaside embrace with his girlfriend.

'Younger Than Jesus': Made by Generation Why
BY BLAKE GOPNIK
It's said that new art reflects new times. If that's true, what could be a better mirror on our troubled days than a huge survey of the latest art by the latest crop of artists? You couldn't ask for a more thorough pulse-taking than you get in "Younger Than Jesus," the show now filling all four floors of the New Museum's stylish home on the Bowery. It presents 124 works by 50 artists, all 33 or younger, from 25 countries, selected from a 500-name shortlist submitted by an international panel of experts. It's the first in a planned series of triennials the museum calls "The Generational."

Obama Taps Utah Governor as China Ambassador
Associated Press
President Barack Obama reached across the political divide Saturday and named Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, a potential Republican presidential contender in 2012, to the sensitive diplomatic post of U.S. ambassador to China. Fluent in Mandarin Chinese from his days as a Mormon missionary in Taiwan, the 49-year-old Huntsman is a popular two-term governor who served in both Bush administrations. He has made a name for himself advocating a moderate agenda in one of the nation's most conservative states.

More than 40 children shocked with stun guns during Take Your Child to Work Day
3 fired, 2 resign after kids shocked in Florida prisons
The Associated Press
Demonstrations at three Florida prisons where more than 40 children were shocked with stun guns have led to the dismissal of three employees and the resignation of two others, the Department of Corrections said Friday. The incidents took place on April 23, national "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day." As part of demonstrations at two prisons, children held hands in a circle, and one was shocked with the stun gun, passing the shock around the circle. At another prison, children were shocked individually.

Gay marriages work
Thank you for David Crary's May 9 article on five years of marriage equality for same-sex couples in Massachusetts.
As we prepare to celebrate our fifth anniversary of the freedom to marry on May 17, articles like this deliver good news: Marriage for same-sex couples in Massachusetts has been good for families, good for communities and good for kids. I was disappointed, however, that the reporter failed to note that, in our state, leaders of faith who support marriage rights for all played a key and critical role in defending our right to marry. The Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry (RCFM) worked tirelessly to contact, educate and include both clergy and lay persons of faith in the long fight to defeat a series of anti-marriage proposals in our legislature. The RCFM engaged in grass-roots organizing that resulted in 1,100 clergy signing a statement of support, more than 3,000 Roman Catholic lay people signing a statement of support and extensive lobbying by clergy and lay people of faith. Moreover, RCFM was instrumental in engaging and supporting the prominent religious leaders who spoke out publicly. The reporter quoted only religious leaders who oppose the right of same-sex couples to marry, as if they were and are the only religious voices to be heard in Massachusetts. Gay Men Empowerment Series workshops at SunServe
Meetings offer men the opportunity to meet outside of usual social setting
By DAN RENZI
The Gay Men Empowerment Series, or GMEP, is a series of seminars and discussions to explore the “best of being gay.” The Gay Men Empowerment Series began in 2002 when a group of Broward County therapists discussed they were getting frequent requests from gay men as to why there wasn’t an alternative setting for men to meet each other outside of the usual bar setting. These therapists organized the Gay Male Empowerment Group to respond to those needs with programs and seminars, many of which are self-improvement, along with other activities to fill the need.

Dissing DADT, Jon Stewart–Style
By Neal Broverman
Leave it to The Daily Show's Jon Stewart to eviscerate "don't ask, don't tell" with a laugh. On Thursday's episode, Stewart argued with mock correspondent John Oliver over the firing of Lt. Dan Choi, a West Point graduate, Iraq war vet, and Arabic linguist who was recently informed he is being discharged from the Army because he publicly revealed he is gay. As Stewart, playing the voice of reason, argued that Lieutenant Choi is a worthy asset desperately needed during this time of two wars, Oliver countered with his only argument: "He's gay."

Gay - and Greek
By Jenny Hagel, special to 365Gay.com
I was late, as usual. It was the second Monday of some month in 1996. The second Monday meant we weren’t just having a regular sorority meeting, we were having a formal meeting. Which had a lot of rituals. Which I was about to interrupt. I was a sophomore at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. The first fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, was founded at the College in 1776, making William and Mary the birthplace of the Greek system in America. But I wasn’t thinking about that as I slunk in late to formal meeting. I was just trying not to get caught.

Daigle: Blue Jeans and Blue Eyeshadow
By Cody Daigle, The Times of Acadiana
When you grow up gay in a small town, you inevitably face this choice: get the hell out of that small town the second you’re able or stay where you are and see what you can make of it. I chose to stay, for reasons both professional and personal. And in the ten years since I made that choice, I’ve been able to make a life I’m both happy with and proud of. I’ve gotten to do some very cool things, and some pretty amazing people have crossed my path.

SC House nixes mention of gays in date-abuse bill
By The Associated Press
South Carolina lawmakers want to prevent violence in teen relationships but won’t allow a new school program aimed at curbing such abuse to mention gay and lesbian partnerships. State representatives voted overwhelmingly Thursday to bar any mention of homosexual relationships in the new program for middle and high school students. The move was pushed by lawmakers who said they don’t want schools teaching about gay relationships and said they doubt those partnerships have high levels of abuse.

50 US Congressional Members Say Census Should Count Gay/Lesbian Marriages
Kerry Eleveld Lawmakers: Census Should Include Gay Couples Advocate.com
Gay U.S. representatives Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Barney Frank of Massachusetts, and Jared Polis of Colorado along with 48 other congressional members sent a letter to Office of Management and Budget director Peter Orszag asking that the 2010 Census count same-sex married couples rather than altering their status. Last year, the Bush administration — citing the Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex unions — announced that lawfully married same-sex couples who marked “married” on their census forms would have their status changed to “unmarried partners” in the final count. Now, congressional members are calling on Orszag to reverse course. Read more

TX: Police Liaison May Go Full Time
John Wright News Editor | Dallas Voice
In 1998, there were just two anti-gay hate crimes reported in Washington, D.C. In each of the last two years, there were between 50 and 60. “That doesn’t mean there have been more hate crimes,” said Cmdr. Brett Parson, who oversees the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit. “It means we’re finally getting them reported to us. We’re finally recognizing what they are and investigating them.” Read more

SC: Teen Dating Bill Passes Without Reference to Gays
GINA SMITH - gnsmith@thestate.com | The State
House lawmakers have given key approval to a new teen dating violence policy that excludes references to gay relationships. In a 75 to 25 vote today, the House approved a bill that will require the state’s school districts to distribute information to parents and students about the dangers of abusive teen relationships. Rep. Greg Delleney, R-Chester, included an amendment that all written materials reference heterosexual relationships only. After one more perfunctory vote, the bill heads to the Senate. Read more

‘You’re Not Safe in Moscow’, Gay Eurovision Fans Told Ahead of March
Luke Harding Moscow | The Guardian
Just across the road from a statue of Pushkin, a handful of demonstrators have put up a modest sign. It reads simply: “Moscow is not Sodom.” As a cold wind whips through the Russian capital’s Pushkinskaya square, activists hand out leaflets showing two men kissing, crossed out in angry red ink with the slogan: “Say no to spiritual terrorism.” The demonstrators’ ire is directed at an unlikely target – the 54th Eurovision Song contest. Russia is hosting the 2009 event on Saturday following the victory last year in Serbia of the mullet-haired Russian singer Dima Bilan. The protesters are not demonstrating against Eurovision as such, but against plans by gay rights activists to hold a parade in Moscow this weekend on the day of the final. Read more

Now a Miami-based technology firm is stepping in to help. Residents at the Four Freedoms Tower senior housing building on Miami Beach are getting a digital overhaul. -ANKARA - A recent trend of breaking taboos in Turkey, including a top government official’s reported use of the word ’Kurdistan,’ has Turkey’s LGBT community calling for stronger political commitments to fight discrimination against homosexuals. This is about rights and any tolerant society can benefit from its own diversity, the Danish ambassador says. Amid a recent flare-up of discussions about homosexuality in Turkey, representatives from a range of areas in society have come together for a meeting in Ankara in an attempt to confront the prevalence of homophobia in the country.

-Rex Wockner: My research suggests there are death-penalty issues in 10 nations.
More than 80 of the world's 195 nations criminalize gay sex, and it is punishable by death in 10 -- Afghanistan, Iran, Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. In Pakistan and the UAE, however, the criminal code, which does not punish sodomy with death, tends to take precedence over the equally legal Shariah law, which does punish sodomy with death. In Somalia, Shariah law is in force in portions of the nation. Somalia presently has no national government. In Afghanistan, the penal code does not punish sodomy with death, but Shariah does -- and is in force in much of the country. Nigeria has the Shariah death penalty for gay sex in northern provinces only, where Shariah takes precedence over federal law and people have been sentenced to death for gay sex, though executions apparently have not been carried out. The remaining five nations have an unambiguous national death penalty for sodomy -- Iran, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen.

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-cause8-2009may08,0,6665296.story

-Kirby Dick, the Academy Award-nominated director of Outrage, exposes the hypocrisy of closeted politicians who actively campaign against the very community they secretly belong to. Some of the most influential policymakers in the United States are gay, but you wouldn't know it to look at their voting records. Because despite being members of the LGBT community, many closeted politicians actually vote against the proposals designed to give that community equal rights. In speaking with such members of the gay community as US Representatives Tammy Baldwin and Barney Frank, as well as radio personality Michelangelo Signorile, activist Larry Kramer, and Former NJ Governor Jim McGreevey, Dick is able to explore the complexities of eading a double lifestyle, as well as highlight the double standards of a media hat has become obsessed with covering the sex lives of gay public figures.

-Ft. Lauderdale: WSVN -- High school is tough for kids and became worse for Martavian Johnson when both his parents passed away. Martavian Johnson: "My dad died like a year and half ago, and my mom died like a month and half ago. I like to see myself as a strong individual, I've coped with it." Copes by living with his older brother. That makes him different, and this makes him stand out as well. Martavian Johnson: "I'm gay." Gay, happy and excited about the Homestead High School prom. Martavian Johnson: "Prom is what everyone talks about." And if he gets his way, his classmates will be talking about Martavian at the prom because he wants to dress ... in a dress. Martavian Johnson: "I want to dress as a female for prom ... and male. I plan on doing both. I was going to switch. You walk in as a female, with your clothes on, and then you change at the party at the prom."

Grrr on the Dan Choi scandal. And shame on the Obama administration.

Historically in America, we've seen abominable policies and laws wilt when public sentiment against those policies and laws reached a critical mass. We saw it with racial segregation and lynching practices; we saw it with various anti-woman work and legal practices. Now it appears we're seeing it with the shameful "don't ask, don't tell" policy. I've written about this on my blog, at http://tinyurl.com/o99oas. I'd love for you to take a look!
