Assessing Barack Obama
A year after Barack Obama was elected president, he is juggling many of the issues that defined his candidacy — and then some. He is in the middle of lengthy debate over whether to expand the war in Afghanistan, and he continues to press for an overhaul of the health care system. While it will be years before it is possible to gauge the success of his governing agenda, Times reporters offer these assessments of his record on some of the issues so far.

Now Pay-Per-Viewing | The Ace for Adults
By Rocky Casale
What at most hotels is a dirty (and lucrative) little secret, Ace Hotels has turned into another opportunity to explore the zeitgeist. The Portland-based chainlet recently announced it has struck a deal with Butt magazine, the pink-papered gay quarterly, to curate 16 homoerotic films for the video-on-demand service at its New York and Palm Springs, Calif., properties. Selected by Gert Jonkers and Jop van Bennekom, the Dutch publishers of Butt and the fashion magazine Fantastic Man, the video selections will include a range of rare and historic adult movies — some in 3-D! — that are in keeping with the magazine’s mission: to make titillation a cultural experience. A fixture in shops like Opening Ceremony, Butt regularly features the notable (Edmund White, Gus Van Sant) and the anonymous (Angel the Dominican carpenter) in various states of undress, which makes the Ace partnership no surprise. Since its start, the brand has aligned itself with independent tastemakers: Pearl’s Plus, Surface to Air, Arkitip, Doc Martens and Crush Fanzine are a few current collaborators keeping Ace among the avant-garde.
