Broward School Board to discuss role of diversity committee

Members will discuss whether the district's diversity committee needs a newname and focus at a workshop meeting today.
BY HANNAH SAMPSON
hsampson@MiamiHerald.com

Broward School Board members will consider a question today that they havetackled many times before: What is the role of the district's diversitycommittee?

This time, they also will discuss whether ''diversity'' should continue tobe part of their name.

A subcommittee of the diversity panel has suggested that the title bechanged to the ``educational equity compliance committee.''

That reflects the group's charge in 2000 to monitor how well the district iscomplying with the court settlement to a racial equity lawsuit.

But some board members said they are not willing to give up other diversity-related issues to focus solely on the lawsuit settlement.

''You have to monitor every issue,'' said board member Robin Bartleman.

25,000 property tax notices returned as undeliverable in Broward

By Scott Wyman
South Florida Sun-Sentinel

September 12, 2006

More than 25,000 property tax notices have been returned to the BrowardCounty Property Appraiser's Office as undeliverable, prompting concern thatresidents might miss their chance to protest their new home values and taxes.

Property Appraiser Lori Parrish mailed out about 800,000 notices in lateAugust detailing how much the property's value has increased, what eachgovernment plans to assess in taxes this year and the schedule of upcomingbudget hearings.

Prompt delivery is critical because governments hold their hearings on theirspending and taxes by the end of September and the deadline to appeal aproperty's new valuation is next Monday. Parrish and the U.S. Postal Serviceare working to figure out what went wrong and to resend them as quickly aspossible.

The voters spoke with an unclear message

After the primary election:

(1) Who knew that Charlie Crist was going to crush Tom Gallagher in theRepublican primary by 30 percentage points? (Oh, go ahead, claim that youdid.) In the closing days, Gallagher's support collapsed like a fallingsouffle.

(2) Some tried to conclude from Tuesday's results that the importance of"values voters" is overrated. Gallagher lost and so did anti-abortioncrusader Randall Terry in a state Senate race. Is this the beginning of aNew Moderation, etc., etc.?

Nah. I wouldn't read anything broader into the case-by-case results. Both ofthose guys just had tough opponents with a broader appeal. Look at the wayRonda Storms cruised in her Hillsborough state Senate race.

(3) Notice the first words of Crist's acceptance speech: He said he wants tobe the governor of all the people, not just Republicans.
