GAY TRAVEL
Throw out those tired stereotypes of gay cruises
On every gay cruise I taken, the vibe is consistently warm, friendly, and
easygoing.
BY ED SALVATO

I'll admit, before going on my first gay cruise back in March 2001 I was a little nervous. I'd never been into group travel or cruises, never mind with 2,000 gay and lesbian strangers. Would there be a lot of attitude? Would it be a nonstop party with no escape? Would I be able to relax or, worse, would I be bored?

I'm delighted to report that it was one of my best vacations ever and, since that time, I've been on five more. Back then, the ship wasn't very impressive nor were the onboard amenities, the food or even the ports of call. My fondest memories are of all the fantastically diverse people I met: gay women and men; young and old; couples and solo travelers; some with chiseled abs, others couch-potato curvy.

Best part of it, everyone's on vacation: no snobs, just straight-up friendly, fun-seeking gays and lesbians from cities, suburbs and rural hamlets, many of whom are supremely grateful for the opportunity to hold their honey's hand in public without fear.

Navratilova Signs Off with yet Another Title
By REUTERS
Filed at 1:09 a.m. ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Martina Navratilova put a crowning gloss on her magnificent career by teaming up with Bob Bryan to win the U.S. Open mixed doubles final on Saturday.

Navratilova, in her last tournament, and fellow American Bryan beat Czechs Kveta Peschke and Martin Damm 6-2 6-3.

It was a fitting way for Navratilova, who turns 50 next month, to hang up her racquet, her 59th grand slam title adding to a remarkable record that began when she turned professional in 1975.

She rose to the top of the women's game with serve-and-volley brilliance, accumulating 167 singles and 177 women's doubles titles. She was world number one for a total of 331 weeks.

Her grand slam haul includes 18 singles crowns, 31 women's doubles and 10 mixed doubles titles.

Lawyers weigh pros and cons of asking Supreme Court to strike down state'sharshly-worded gay marriage ban

Last week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit denied a requestto reconsider a July ruling that upheld Nebraska's harshly worded ban onsame-sex marriage and other legal ties between gay couples.

The rejection leaves Lambda Legal Defense and the American Civil LibertiesUnion between a rock and a hard place.

The gay advocates who brought the federal challenge to Nebraska's law in2003 can either give up the fight, or appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Rights activists worry over anti-gay marriage

International rights activists have expressed concern over Nigeria'santi-gay marriage bill currently in the National Assembly, saying it isagainst modern trends.

Tagged "Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act 2006," the bill was presented tothe House of Representatives on March 30 by the executive arm of governmentwhich requested for its approval by expedite procedure.

A Senior Fellow of Global Rights, a U.S.-based non-governmentalorganisation, Mr. Stefano Fabeni, told a workshop in Abuja that certainprovisions in the bill trampled on human rights rather than on gay rights.
