Former council member makes anti-gay remarks
A former Village Councilman's comments about the gay community set offcontroversy at the end of last week's Village Council meeting.

Some El Portal residents are outraged following Tuesday's Village Councilmeeting, when a former council member made remarks about the gay communitythey say are offensive.

Two council members walked off the dais, and one questioned why the mayordid not try to stop former councilman Lawrence D. Kennedy Jr. while he wasspeaking.

Kennedy, 70, did not run for reelection this year and has a reputation formaking outrageous statements.

More students take a pass on SAT exams
Fewer high school seniors are tackling the SAT college entrance exam, andBroward school officials want to know why.

Fewer Broward high school seniors are taking the SAT compared with threeyears ago, and school officials are not sure why. And the gap between blackand white test-takers remains wide.

The test is one of the most popular and widely accepted college entranceexams in the country.

But since the 2003-04 school year, there has been a 9 percent decline in thenumber of seniors taking the test, a recent Broward School District reportconcluded.
