AS the race for the Democratic presidential nomination nears its end andattention turns to the role of so-called superdelegates in choosing thenominee, it is instructive to look at why my party created this class ofdelegates. .... Superdelegates were created to lead, not to follow. Theywere, and are, expected to determine what is best for the Democratic Partyand best for the country.

It's Not Your Father's Religious Right By David Kuo
Who will govern the new religious right?
History may look back at this Republican primary season and judge thatanswering that question -- not determining the nominee -- could be itsgreatest significance. Even if Sen. John McCain wins the race for the WhiteHouse, he's likely, at his age, to be a one-term, caretaker president. But anewly reconstituted religious right will be helping determine who wins thepresidency for decades. So whoever ends up heading it will potentially enjoya much more powerful position. That there's now a pitched battle for thesoul of the religious right is a horrifying thought to Republican leaderslong familiar with the old religious right, a hierarchical group dominatedby larger-than-life figures who'd anointed themselves Jesus's politicalrepresentatives.
