-Letters: Deciphering Relationships
To the Editor:
Re "Gay Unions Shed Light on Gender in Marriage" (June 10): Men and womenare different physically, hormonally, emotionally. Of course, heterosexualrelationships are more challenging than those with people of the same sex!But instead of commending those who navigate these differences, the articlechides them ("heterosexual couples need to work harder"), suggesting thatthose who are different learn to behave as if they were the same. Analternate conclusion might have been "Vive la différence!"

-Andrew Sullivan slams HRC
In a typically sweeping and harsh post about the Human Rights Campaign, blogger Andrew "Don't Call Me A Conservative" Sullivan calls the group"useless" while ignoring or glossing over some key facts.
Sullivan was responding to Michael Petrelis' report on donations to theDemocratic presidential campaigns by HRC staffers. Sullivan reports thefollowing totals: $4,300 for Clinton from HRC staffers and zero for BarackObama. The Clinton number is mildly interesting, but hardly an impressivepile of cash.

-Taking on Gay Republicans
As promised, this is a clip of the conversation I had on the show last weekwith caller Steven in Pittsburgh. He called in after I had spoken withPatrick Sammon, president of the Log Cabin Republicans. It was quite alengthy call, as I wanted to really flesh out the gay Republican philosophyand how they were applying it to this election. As the clip begins, Stevehad been talking about the issues of health care and taxes, and how hedisagreed with the Democrats' approach. And I was making the point that thegay issue, if you are GLBT, has to trump all the others, considering how theRepublicans, and George Bush -- and John McCain -- have courted homobigots.
Your thoughts are welcome. (One minor correction: In the heat of the momentI inadvertently said that John Hagee was on McCain's payroll. Of course Iknow he was not. In the context of the clip, however, the point is thesame.)

-The Internet as a Setting for Sexual Health Development Among Gay Youth
Sex education is predominately being taught in our schools across thenation, with a medley of variations on how to teach the subject. More andmore schools are choosing to teach their students about sexual health, risks, and general knowledge and foregoing the idea that abstinence is theonly answer. The educational facilities who address the pink elephant in theroom should be applauded. The problem with Sex Ed. is the fact that itrevolves around heterosexual relationships. Gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB)youth can feel left out and uninformed as a result of this education. A lackof support and knowledge in other social groups such as peers, families, andcommunities can lead to youth looking for alternative sources for theirsexual health development needs.

-A Nevada legislative panel on Monday held up a regulation that would extendhealth insurance benefits for state employees to domestic partners, including those of the same sex. The deferral by the Legislative Commissionfollowed a divided vote last month in favor of the rule change by statePublic Employees Benefits Program board members. Opponents had expressedconcerns about budget problems that could make an estimated $2.7 millionannual cost unaffordable. Proponents had argued the change would beconsistent with Nevada laws that ban workplace discrimination based onsexual orientation.

-County clerks throughout California have been inconsistent in how to treatan employee uncomfortable with performing a ceremony for a same-sex couple. It started when San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk GregorySmith told The Times in May that he would consider allowing employeesexpressing discomfort to opt out. Even though officials in San Diego havesince declined to elaborate their policy, saying it was an internal issue, other counties have followed their lead.
A survey of the state's 58 counties conducted by The Times shows that 35counties said they would not allow clerks to opt out, or responded that noone in their office had expressed reservations.

-Cheers filled San Francisco's City Hall shortly after 5 p.m. as longtimelesbian activists Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, partners for more than 50years, began their second wedding - and their first legal union. -Most Americans continue to think there should be some legal recognition ofgay and lesbian couples, and 30 percent say same-sex couples should beallowed to marry - the highest number since CBS News began asking thisquestion in 2004. Twenty-eight percent think same-sex couples should bepermitted to form civil unions, but more than a third - 36 percent - saythere should be no legal recognition of a gay couple's relationship.

-The Real David Benkof
By Wayne Besen | Truth Wins Out
A month ago, David Benkof presented me with an opinion piece he wroteslamming the "ex-gay" organization Jews Offering New Alternatives toHomosexuality (JONAH). It appeared to be useful information, but I refusedto employ it in my efforts. Why?
Because, in my view, Benkof lacks character and cannot be trusted. Once upona time, he was the openly bisexual founder of Q-syndicate, which providesthe GLBT press with content. Then, he quit his job, became a born again Jew,changed his last name from Bianco to Benkof and claims to have given up sexwith men. He went on to stab the GLBT community in the back and cozied up tothe anti-gay industry.
Granted, I never liked this man. I met him at a National Lesbian and GayJournalists Association meeting in Chicago several years ago. I found him tobe crass and lack class. He was an overbearing, insufferable, ill-manneredbraggart with an ego the size of the Sears Tower. With a distaste for hispersonality, I simply smiled and walked away.

-Mainstream Media Maintain that Marriage Not an '08 Election Issue
Over the past months, media professionals and political pundits alike havepondered whether marriage for gay couples will really mean anything in thisyear's presidential race. The Cleveland Plain Dealer, like many mediaoutlets that have spoken out, published an article today that told readersthat marriage will not likely affect voters this year. The article citedbig and small factors that affect Ohio's, and the country's, voters on adaily basis: gas prices, Iraq, health insurance. Political scientist DanielSmith told the Plain Dealer: "I don't know how McCain can use that issue[marriage for gay and lesbian couples] to help voters switch sides. Theeconomy is much more important." Though the Plain Dealer article didmention an anti-gay industry organization's stance on marriage, the articledid not dwell on it, and instead gave time to political experts, suggestingthat the media, and voters, seem to care less about sensationalisticcoverage of the gay community this election season.

-Marriage Gains are a Two-Edge Sword
In 1970, two gay students at the University of Minnesota attempted to obtaina marriage license. When they were denied, they took their case to the state's court system. When the suit reached Minnesota's Supreme Court, the studentslost. Forty years later, the push for basic marriage rights for same-sexcouples has eclipsed employment non-discrimination, hate crimes legislationand repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military policy to become thenumber one advocacy issue of national LGBT organizations and influentialLGBT activists. There's no doubt that civil marriage - and the plethora offederal, state and local rights and privileges that come with it - wouldallow same-sex couples to better care for themselves and their children.
Full marriage equality would also further assimilate the gay community intomainstream American society.

-Male Rape Victim Shares His Story, Part Two
The first half of this two-part series, published in the May 31 issue ofQ-Notes, began with some eye-opening statistics. To recap: The U.S. JusticeDepartment reports that one in every 10 rape victims is male. A nationalstudy found that three percent of American men (2.78 million) have been thevictim of an attempted or completed rape, and 60 percent of those menidentify as gay or bisexual. The Hickory Police Department said a total of31 adult sexual assault or rape cases were reported in 2007. Of those, onlyone - the case of our alleged victim, identified here with the pseudonymBrian - was an instance of male-on-male sexual assault. North Carolina lawdoes not recognize that a man can rape another man. Therefore, when bothparties are male, cases that would be considered rapes elsewhere areprosecuted as sexual assaults in North Carolina. Part two of Brian's story, presented here, details his experiences and interactions with the communityagencies charged with assisting victims of sexual assault and rape.

-The Johns (McCain, Kerry) on Marriage
Over the weekend, John McCain hosted a meeting for disaffected HillaryClinton supporters in a quixotic effort to woo them to the GOP side. I canonly imagine what my friend Kevin thinks about these militant Clintonistasbreaking bread with McCain, but there seems to be no end of pandering intrying to scoop them up. Ben Smith of Politico.com reports that McCaindisguised his stated preference for Supreme Court justices in the hard-rightmold of John Roberts and Samuel Alito by instead pointing out to the Hillarybackers that he voted to confirm Bill Clinton's nominees - Ruth BaderGinsberg and Stephen Breyer. Never mind the mammoth difference between therange of nominees a senator would vote to confirm and the narrow scope ofchoices he would make from the Oval Office himself.
And then this:
Another person who was present, but asked not to be named to avoid conflictwith fellow Democrats, said he'd pressed a McCain staffer on McCain'sposition on same-sex marriage.
The staffer "said it was the same as [John] Kerry's position," he said.
That answer is the type of half-truth that only a Clintonista could love; itall depends on what you're definition of "same" is. Yes, McCain and Kerryboth oppose gay marriage, both opposed a federal marriage amendment and bothhave backed amendments to state constitutions that would ban same-sexcouples from marrying. Read more

-HRC Money and Mouth Go to HRC
Gay and HIV activist-blogger Michael Petrelis is the best in the gay biz atfollowing the money. This week he compiled a few data points about the HumanRights Campaign and Hillary Rodham Clinton that are as disappointing andthey are not-surprising:
FEC records show which 2008 Democratic contenders were lucky enough to takein dollars from the top people at HRC:
Hillary Clinton: $4,300
Chris Dodd: $3,000
John Edwards: $ 750
Bill Richardson: $ 500
Barack Obama: $ 0
Zero dollars for (and zero leverage with) the Democratic nominee is justabout right from an organization that has made almost no effort to hide itssiamese-twin (or should I say 'conjoined'?) relationship with the other HRC.Read more

-Dublin could be a 'creative city' if we get rid of limiting mindsets
Successful, dynamic, exciting cities are ones that embrace diversity andopenness and plan to meet people's real needs, rather than adhering toideological positions, writes Kieran Rose. In the Rise of the CreativeClass, Richard Florida writes: "We live in a time of great promise. We haveevolved economic and social systems that tap human creativity and turn itinto economic value as never before. This in turn creates an unparalleledopportunity to raise our living standards, build a more humane andsustainable economy, and make our lives more complete." Florida documentsthe centrality of creative industries and creative workers in the neweconomy and in global competitiveness; and how openness to diversity, especially in relation to gay people and people from diverse backgrounds andother countries, is critical to success.
