The Early Word: A Working Holiday
By Janie Lorber
Don’t Ask Don’t Tell: Mr. Obama reiterated Saturday night his commitment to ending Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the 1993 policy that bars gays from serving openly in the military. So, why can’t he make it happen, gay rights activists ask. Congress would need to pass a bill in order to overturn the policy. And, while a growing number of Democrats, including Representative Joe Sestak, a war veteran, and Senator Carl Levin, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, are calling for a repeal, Mr. Obama would have to throw his weight behind such a measure. At a time when the administration is pulling out all the stops to pass a health care bill, it doesn’t seem willing to alienate crucial votes by pushing another divisive issue.

Quotations of the day
The Associated Press
"Black people of all people should not oppose equality, and that is what marriage is all about," he said. "We have a lot of real and serious problems in this country, and same-sex marriage is not one of them. - Julian Bond, chairman of the NAACP, speaking during a rally at the Capitol after tens of thousands of gay rights supporters marched from the White House to the Capitol demanding that President Barack Obama keep his promises to allow gays to serve openly in the military and work to end discrimination against them.

The Rundown
How popular is Obama in the gay and lesbian community? He got a mixes report card from the thousands of marchers who assembled in Washington Sunday to demand more action on their agenda items. Obama may have earned some goodwill by pledging to overturn the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, and the Wall Street Journal reports that support for that change is also growing in Congress and at the Pentagon.

John Kelly's Washington:
Getting His Message Out by Hook or by Crook
By John Kelly
There might be other break-dancing, poetry-slam-hosting, dreadlock-sporting, HIV- awareness-raising, crochet hook-wielding young men in Washington, but if there are, I don't know any. I do, however, know Dwayne Lawson-Brown. . . . "I'm starting to realize that some people think it's not their issue," Dwayne said. "That it's only gay people or young people. Everybody puts it off their plate."

Lady Gaga came to Washington over the weekend to accept her crown as the gay community's reigning pop culture icon, snatching the title from the clutches of Britney (too fake), Kelly Clarkson (too "Idol") and Beyoncé (too Diana Ross in "Mahogany"). The outlandish, platinum-selling, bisexual, 23-year-old pop singer was the highest-wattage celebrity to attend both the Human Rights Campaign dinner Saturday night and the National Equality March on Sunday. Her name was on everyone's lips for a solid 48 hours. A movement is genuflecting.

Today I come to you from the frontlines. As a transgender person from Florida who was born and lives and works in a red state in the South, I know first hand what it feels like to be denied employment. To be treated as less than human. I know the pain and fear that comes with the constant reminder that I am not equal under the law.
