DALLAS (Reuters) - Exit polls during the U.S. presidential primaries inMissouri and Tennessee last week show the Democratic Party has some supportfrom white evangelicals, a group strongly associated with the RepublicanParty. Commissioned by Faith in Public Life, a non-partisan resourcecenter, and conducted by Zogby International during the primaries onFebruary 5, the surveys were the first to ask Democratic voters if they wereevangelical or born-again Christians. The findings reinforce other surveysshowing that Republicans still command most of the support of this votingbloc but by no means have a monopoly on its affections.

It's Freedom to Marry Week, and I thought I'd mark the occasion by talkingabout why marriage matters to me.
Legal protections are part of the story, but only part. Civil unions anddomestic partnerships can cover some (but not all) of the same rights andresponsibilities. The greater reason for marriage, in my mind, is so that Ican tell my son, "Yes, we're married," without any hesitancy or the thoughtthat when he is older, I will have to explain why there's an asterisk onthat statement: "Void where prohibited."

Sober reconsideration time... In my exuberance about the recent decision bythe N.Y. Appellate Division, 4th Department, in the Martinez case, holdingthat a same-sex marriage validly performed elsewhere would be recognized inNew York, I incautiously jumped to the conclusion that this meant nowsame-sex couples from N.Y. could be married in Massachusetts, then come backand have their marriages recognized in N.Y. It turns out that is likelynot the case.

UK - Homosexuality is a family matter
How would you feel if a close relative invited you to their same-sexwedding, asks Donal Lynch
Most polls that have asked about gay issues in Ireland in the last fiveyears reveal ever-growing levels of acceptance of gay people. It has beenvariously shown that people overwhelmingly don't have a problem withhomosexuality, are in favour of gay marriage and wouldn't care if a memberof their favourite boy band turned out to be homosexual. But this is all inthe abstract, involving other people. When you ask people what theirattitudes would be if someone in their own family turned out to be gay, people are far less positive. Over a third of people surveyed in the SundayIndependent's Millward Brown IMS poll said that they would be 'concerned' iftheir child or sibling turned out to be gay.

Mr. Mukasey's False Fear
The attorney general wrongly opposes adjustments of sentences for crackcocaine offenses.
LAST YEAR, the U.S. Sentencing Commission passed and Congress let stand newsentencing guidelines lowering the draconian penalties for crack cocaine. InDecember, without need of congressional approval, the commission made thosechanges retroactive. As a result, nearly 20,000 inmates behind bars forcrack cocaine violations -- the majority of them African Americans -- willbe eligible for early release over the next three decades. These are welcomeand much-needed adjustments to a skewed system that imposes a five-yearmandatory prison sentence on someone caught with five grams of crack; adefendant would have to be caught with 500 grams of powder cocaine totrigger the same sentence.

Conflicting Assessments of War in Afghanistan
President Bush famously doesn't like long memos. So if retired Marine Gen.James L. Jones hoped to get Bush's attention with the report he produced onAfghanistan, he was clever enough to be blunt from the start. "Make nomistake," the report says in its first line. "NATO is not winning inAfghanistan." If Bush read that far into the report, he evidentlydisagrees. During his speech Friday to the Conservative Political ActionConference, the president offered a far rosier view of the situation inAfghanistan than even his own top military and civilian advisers hold.
"TheTaliban, al-Qaeda and their allies are on the run," Bush declared to theaudience of supporters.

Even by the dismal standards of what passes for a national debate onintelligence and civil liberties, last week was a really bad week. While no woman has been president of the United States - yet - the worlddoes have several thousand years' worth of experience with female leaders. And I have to acknowledge it: Their historical record puts men's to shame.A notable share of the great leaders in history have been women: QueenHatshepsut and Cleopatra of Egypt, Empress Wu Zetian of China, Isabella ofCastile, Queen Elizabeth I of England, Catherine the Great of Russia, andMaria Theresa of Austria. Granted, I'm neglecting the likes of Bloody Mary, but it's still true that those women who climbed to power in monarchies hadan astonishingly high success rate.

What a weird, irresistible urge it is -this compulsion to sell low and buy high.
I can't tell you how many folks I've heard from in the past several weekspatting themselves on the back for getting out of the market as it continuedsinking, locking in losses that until then had been only on paper. And some of the losses were considerable. Romney Bid Was a Crucible for Mormons
Mitt Romney isn't the only casualty in his failed presidential bid. TheMormon church, yearning for broad acceptance, also took a beating.Extremists denounced Romney's campaign as a Mormon plot to take over thecountry. Some Evangelicals feared that a Mormon in the White House woulddraw more converts to his faith. Mormon practices were picked apart, evenones that had been abandoned long ago such as polygamy. Romney tried tofocus on politics, but was often asked about sacred Mormon undergarments.

For Broken Iraqis, A Haven of Healing
Children Shattered by War Find Care, Kindness in Jordan
AMMAN, Jordan -- On the third floor of the Amman Palace hotel, above a cityblock crowded with appliance dealers and video-game vendors, six Iraqichildren formed a semicircle around their therapist and practiced how tobreathe. To the right of the therapist sat Abdullah, a 7-year-old boymissing his left foot and left eye. The afternoon sun slanted across hisface, which once had been so erased his father failed to recognize it andnow was a mottled mask of flesh grafted from his back. Two boys wore legcasts. A third had a burnt face. Three of the children sat in wheelchairs.Zaineb, an 11-year-old girl who could barely move her crippled legs, wore ablack wool cap over her broken skull.

Promises They Can't Keep
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama share a problem as they move deeper intothe primary season: They have both issued promises to withdraw from Iraqthat are impossibly vague, unrealistic or worse. They must now rectifythis -- for the good of their campaigns and the nation. The Democraticcandidates repeat fundamental errors already made in Iraq by President Bush. They ignore the important role that Iraqis must play in deciding the fate oftheir nation if there is to be any stability during and after a U.S.withdrawal.

Why It Was Called 'Water Torture'
Last week, much to my dismay, government officials testified before Congressthat the United States has used the interrogation technique known aswaterboarding and would like to hold out the option of using it in thefuture. As someone who has experienced waterboarding, albeit in a controlledsetting, I know that the act is indeed torture. I was waterboarded during mytraining to become a Navy flight crew member. As has been noted in The Postand other media outlets, waterboarding is "real drowning that simulatesdeath." It's an experience our country should not subject people to.

The Coming Change

The Disaffected Voters Who'll Decide 2008
It has been a totally confusing election -- and the 2008 race is onlygetting started. The resurrection of John McCain, the Barack Obamainsurgency, the fall (and rise) of Hillary Rodham Clinton, the rise (andfall and rise) of Mike Huckabee -- pundits, pollsters and other supposedlyexpert observers have largely missed them all. In fact, there's a simplereason why the chattering classes have so consistently called this electionwrong. They're missing the most important dynamic of this race: theappearance of a crucially important new bloc of voters who are clamoring forbold, nonpartisan solutions and are disgusted with today's Washingtonpolitics. But the candidates themselves are missing something, too -- abold, simple and overwhelmingly popular idea that would upend thepresidential race.

Because They Said So
Even by the dismal standards of what passes for a national debate onintelligence and civil liberties, last week was a really bad week. TheSenate debated a bill that would make needed updates to the ForeignIntelligence Surveillance Act - while needlessly expanding the president'sability to spy on Americans without a warrant and covering up the unlawfulspying that President Bush ordered after 9/11.

When Women Rule

Panel Votes to End Fla. Election Probe
WASHINGTON -- A House task force voted Friday to end an investigation into a disputed 2006 Florida congressional election after extensive testing showed that touch-screen voting machines likely worked properly. Democrat Christine Jennings called for the congressional investigation after she lost the District 13 seat to Republican Vern Buchanan by 369 votes. She suggested Sarasota County's touch-screen voting machines were to blame for the more than 18,000 ballots that did not register a choice in the contest.

Slap at South Florida
Last year, South Florida finally got some hope that after nearly a decade Washington would begin paying the federal government's share of Everglades restoration. Put that hope on hold for another year. President Bush, who when his brother was running for reelection as governor pledged to preserve the Everglades, has been breaking that promise ever since Jeb Bush began his second term in Tallahassee. So it was disappointingbut hardly surprising to hear that the president's 2009 budget includes far less than what is needed for the first key project in Everglades restoration.
