Panel Votes to End Fla. Election Probe
WASHINGTON -- A House task force voted Friday to end an investigation into a disputed 2006 Florida congressional election after extensive testing showed that touch-screen voting machines likely worked properly. Democrat Christine Jennings called for the congressional investigation after she lost the District 13 seat to Republican Vern Buchanan by 369 votes. She suggested Sarasota County's touch-screen voting machines were to blame for the more than 18,000 ballots that did not register a choice in the contest.

To those pushing to ban gay marriage through a ballot initiative: Ifsegregation had been left up to the voters back in the 1960s, Florida wouldstill have separate drinking fountains for blacks and whites. Alan PutzWilton Manors

Republicans losing grip on Miami Cuban vote?
MIAMI - An anti-communist militant who fired a bazooka at a Polish freighter walked free with impunity in this sultry subtropical U.S. city, and Cuban Americans favoring closer ties with their homeland could onceexpect to be firebombed here. But Miami has changed and the sometimes violent scenes of Cuban exilepassion appear to be in the past. That could spell trouble for President George W. Bush's Republican Party in November's general election, opponents and analysts say.

Slap at South Florida
Last year, South Florida finally got some hope that after nearly a decade Washington would begin paying the federal government's share of Everglades restoration. Put that hope on hold for another year. President Bush, who when his brother was running for reelection as governor pledged to preserve the Everglades, has been breaking that promise ever since Jeb Bush began his second term in Tallahassee. So it was disappointingbut hardly surprising to hear that the president's 2009 budget includes far less than what is needed for the first key project in Everglades restoration.
