Obama has been talking about LGBT Americans in his speeches at criticalmoments in his career---from introducing himself to America at the DNCConvention, to announcing his presidential candidacy, to campaigning inIowa, to his historic speech on Martin Luther King Day, and more recentlywhile campaigning in Beaumont, TX and Nelsonville, OH. Four years ago, when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom declared by fiat thatthe state's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional, televisioncameras captured for the whole world the images of gay and lesbian couplesinundating the streets outside City Hall. In less than a month, more than4,000 same-sex couples wed there, until the California Supreme Court stoppedthe weddings and later declared the marriages invalid. "HIV infection is characterised by the slow demise of T-cells, in particularcentral memory cells, which can mediate lifelong protection against viruses," said lead researcher Rafick-Pierre Sékaly, a Université deMontréal professor and a researcher at the Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal and the French Institut national de la santé et de la recherchemédicale (Inserm).

He stands up for ourcommunity---making clear that he will not tolerate homophobia or attacks onour community and that he will fight for our rights--in speeches beforemainstream audiences all across the nation; not just in front of gayaudiences; not just when he knows he will get a round of applause, but whenit is sometimes awkward or uncomfortable. That is leadership; that is whywe need to Barack Obama as our next President.

Laws should grant the same rights to all of today's families.
The court said itwould willingly hear a constitutional challenge brought in a more orderlyfashion.

Deal expensive, maybe unconstitutional
The Miami-Dade County Commission last month approved a proposal to spend$347 million in taxpayer money to build a 37,000-seat, retractable-roofstadium for the Florida Marlins. This proposal not only provides a hugesubsidy to the team's much maligned owner, Jeffrey Loria, but it also mightviolate two provisions of the Florida Constitution.

We demand a real primary or caucus in Florida by Phil LaPadula
After I voted in Florida's Jan. 29 primary, a smiling poll worker handed mea sticker with an American flag and the words "My Vote Counted!" printed onit. I'm sure the people responsible for the stickers meant well, but I foundit to be another slap in the face in a state that has perfected the art of disenfranchising voters.
You see, our votes really didn't count here in Florida. The Democratic National Committee stripped Florida of all of its delegates to the nationalconvention as punishment for the state holding its primary before Feb. 5.Since the votes do not translate into delegates, they are essentiallymeaningless, and the voters voiceless in the primary process.

As a local divorce lawyer, I am really tired of letters from whiners likeDaren Young, who try to argue that he and his domestic partner aren't adrain on our community ("Some drain," Forum, Feb. 22). How am I supposed tomake a living around here when successful, professional,society-contributing guys like that are also blissfully happy in theirhomosexual relationships? More important, if they ever split up, how canthey truly utilize the benefits of my services as extensively (andlucratively for me) as my unhappy married clients? Simply outrageous.

Washington: Expanding privileges for same-sex couples is not a partisan issue but one of civil rights, says the newest member of the Legislature's unofficial gaycaucus. Rep. Marko Liias, D-Mukilteo, who was appointed to his position inJanuary, is backing a bill working its way through the Legislature thatwould expand rights for domestic partners. "It really shouldn't matter whereyou come from on a political spectrum; it's about making sure that everybodyhas an equal opportunity in our society to succeed.

In statehouses, well-meaning legislators offer civil unions or domesticpartner laws as a compromise for same-sex couples. New Jersey passed amuch-publicized civil union law in 2006. "It was supposed to give theequivalent of marriage to same-sex couples," wrote the Philadelphia Inquirerlast week. "But companies whose benefits plans are regulated by federalrules, rather than state law, overwhelmingly are refusing to provide healthinsurance to employees' same-sex partners." Lawrence C. Levine, a professorat McGeorge School of Law, said California's domestic partner laws arebetter than most - but they still aren't equal.

One gay rights group appearing before the California Supreme Court inhistoric marriage arguments on Tuesday has told the court that "the freedomto marry the person of one's choice is an essential aspect of humandignity." A traditional-values group on the other side, meanwhile, hasargued that the bid for same-sex marriage is "a ticking bomb aimed atdemolishing the very institution to which plaintiffs claim to seekadmission."

Leaders at Kansas University are concerned that not offering benefits todomestic partners of faculty and staff may end up costing the university theability to recruit some of the most talented candidates. On Monday, theUniversity Senate Executive Committee will receive a report on thepossibility of extending benefits to domestic partners. Paul Farran,president-elect of KU's Unclassified Staff Senate and an advocate for theproposal, said several peer institutions already extend benefits to domesticpartners.

"I can't overstate the importance of California," said Shannon Minter, legaldirector for the National Center for Lesbian Rights. "It will have amonumental impact for decades to come." The Republican-dominated SupremeCourt is generally considered conservative, but has had a notable moderatestreak on social issues. The court, indeed, has strengthened gay rights in anumber of rulings, including a 2005 decision establishing new legalprotections for gay partners in child custody battles. "I suspect the courtis divided on it and it is hard to figure out where they'll come out," saidMichael Wald, a Stanford University law professor.

Jamaica: In light of the challenges being faced by the LGBT community inJamaica, a number of you have called for a tourist boycott of the island.
Like you, J-FLAG has been deeply frustrated at the slow progress towardstransforming the social climate that makes it difficult for gays andlesbians in Jamaica to lead lives free from homophobic violence.
Yet, because of the possible repercussions of increased homophobic violenceagainst our already besieged community, we feel that a tourist boycott isnot the most appropriate response at this time. In our battle to win heartsand minds, we do not wish to be perceived as taking food off the plate ofthose who are already impoverished. In fact, members of our own communitycould be disproportionately affected by a worsened economic situationbrought about by a tourist ban.
J-FLAG believes that there are a number of avenues which can be explored tobring pressure on our government to respect, protect and ensure the humanrights of LGBT people in Jamaica. We have called on the Prime Minister andinfluential leaders of industry to both renounce homophobic violence andcommit to a course of action that will stem this scourge that plagues ourisland.
The concern and support of the international community has been critical infocusing attention to our situation. We are open to further engaging withyou in pursuing constructive interventions that both make our case for humanrights protection and minimize risk to our physical and material well being.

Time to stop hatred and violence
By Nadine Smith
We can be horrified, but we cannot be surprised. Witness the death of yetanother child who said he was gay - the m urder of another teenager whodefied gender stereotypes. On Friday, Feb. 22, 17-year-old Simmie WilliamsJr. was gunned down on a street corner in Broward County. Just 10 daysearlier, Lawrence King, a 15-year-old Oxnard, Calif., junior high student, was shot to death in his own classroom because he wore makeup - because hewas different. And less than one year ago, Ryan Keith Skipper, 24, wasstabbed to death in Polk County.
In Broward, police are investigating
Simmie Williams' murder as a possible hate crime based on the words they saywere exchanged before the shooting. In California, Lawrence King, a constanttarget of harassment and ridicule, was shot in the back and in the head by a14-year-old who told friends in advance that Lawrence was "having his lastday." Ryan's teenaged killers drove around town in his stolen, blood-soakedcar bragging that they had "killed a fag."

Congress and the White House are preparing to ramp up spending on programs to combat AIDS and related diseases around the world while removing some of the ideological blinders that have long undermined the effort to slow the spread of the AIDS virus. ASK AMY
DEAR AMY: A young cousin of mine recently reached out to me with some heavy news. She told me that she is gay. She asked me not to tell anyone in the family, and I am honored that she trusted me with such a secret. I will most definitely honor her secret, and I completely support her.
However, as a man who is certainly more an elder than a peer -- she just started driving; I am pushing 30 -- I am wondering what role I should play in this.

As the battle over a bill banning domestic partner registries continues in the Legislature, the Kansas Equality Coalition is urging people to contact their lawmakers. "Call your representative and senator now and tell them to vote 'no,'" said Thomas Witt, chair of the Equality Coalition. "This awfulbill would make it harder for some LGBT Kansans to get health insurance. It would damage the home rule authority of local cities and counties."
-
Four years ago, much of the Santa Cruz area gay and lesbian community brimmed with optimism as San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom began allowing same-sex marriages, prompting county and city leaders here to pass measures of support. That optimism has been tempered in the intervening years. The California Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments Tuesday on six consolidated suits related to same-gender marriage in which challengers contend state marriage laws are unconstitutional. But few same-sex marriage supporters are ready to party like it's 2004.
-
Arizona: Republicans in the Legislature have introduced a proposal to amend the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. Again? Yes, unfortunately. We think the amendment is unnecessary and unworthy of inclusion in our Constitution.
-
New York: There's a famous line from a speech Sojourner Truth delivered at a women's rights convention in 1851 that comes to mind as Monroe County fights against recognizing gay marriage. "Ain't I a woman?" said the former slave and early feminist, in response to concerns that women weren't strong enough, smart enough or Christ-like enough to merit equal rights. Those are among the arguments against allowing same-sex marriage. But County Executive Maggie Brooks says she's looking out for taxpayers in appealing a state court decision recognizing gay marriages performed outside of New York state.
-
Gay activists have donated thousands of dollars to Iowa politicians in an attempt to derail debate on a legislative proposal that would alter Iowa's Constitution and limit marriage to heterosexual couples, an Iowa group alleged Thursday. Several legislative leaders quickly denounced the group's claims, calling their tactics hateful."I have a problem when people say, 'We are good, they are evil,' House Majority Speaker Pat Murphy, a Dubuque Democrat, said in response to the group. "The bottom line is, I believe that every person should be treated with dignity and respect in this state."
-
Public debate about homosexuality is dominated by the question of choice."Clinics" that aim for "cures" presuppose that it is, while the Web sites of groups like the Human Rights Campaign and Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays prominently display arguments that sexuality is not a choice. Indeed, it seems that most people take the question to be the key to determining whether discrimination is permissible. Both sides are wrong, but my concern today is with those who defend gay rights on the grounds that sexuality is not a choice. Most importantly, focus on the alleged genetic basis of homosexuality gives the bulk of the game away to the anti-gay position. One turns to an "I can't help it" defense, only when one has agreed that something is inherently wrong - or at least morally problematic.

Turkey's Anti-War Diva
Better known for her tabloid love affairs, plastic surgery and husky voice, transsexual Turkish diva Bulent Ersoy makes the unlikeliest political activist. Yet she has caused a storm of outrage by becoming the only public personality to speak out against Turkey's invasion of northern Iraq. So pervasive is the nationalist climate that Ersoy has been vilified for declaring - on a national TV equivalent of American Idol, where she is a judge - that if she had a son, she would not have sent him to fight this war. She is now under investigation for being "anti-military".

Americans who self-identify as "gay" or lesbian comprise roughly one to three percent of the population. Yet the homosexual movement - led by extremist homosexual pressure groups like the so-called Human Rights Campaign (HRC) - represent, per capita, one of America's most powerful and well-funded political lobbies. Consider that HRC and the HRC foundation alone have an annual budget in excess of 50 million.

Advice to a young colleague By LEONARD PITTS JR.
Last week, a fellow journalist wrote to ask me for help. His name is David Tintner, and he's a senior at Cooper City High, where he's the editor of the school paper. Recently, he wrote a column criticizing those who wear what he regards as ''an extremely offensive symbol'': the Confederate battle flag.
David says a group of students known on campus as ''the Redneck Nation'' took exception. A gang of them cornered him at lunch to yell at him. They've made threats and tried to stare him down.

ISSUE: Felons evicted from bridges.

Fort Lauderdale mayor delivers State of the City address
Mayor Jim Naugle highlighted the positives in his latest State of the City address, noting that there were no hurricanes in 2007 and the city's top two industries are faring well. ..... In resurrecting the gay sex issue, he said that despite the Police Department's official statements last summer that public restrooms were not being used as a hookup site for men, they were. He said city parks were listed on the Internet as places to meet, and that 12 related arrests have been made in city parks since the controversybegan in the summer. He didn't specify what the arrests were for."As long as I'm mayor, I'm going to do all I can to make sure the activity doesn't take place," he said. "And hopefully whoever takes my place in 2009 will have the same opinion. I think the majority of the residents do support parks that are available to the children without having to see illegal activity."

Democrats turn out for delegate selection
Whether the delegates picked Saturday will be seated in Denver is still uncertain. When Florida moved up its primary earlier than Democratic rules allowed, the national party punished the state by revoking its convention delegates. Party leaders hope a delegation will get seated, but no final decision has been made.

Michael Mayo: Water management tricky in South Florida
Parker Priest was confused. A few weeks ago, rare, heavy February rains pelted the Everglades water conservation area where he regularly takes his airboat. But in a matter of days, he saw all that water vanish. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opened spillway gates along the North New River Canal in western Broward, causing the water level to abruptly drop nearly 2 feet.
