Fort Lauderdale mayor delivers State of the City address
Mayor Jim Naugle highlighted the positives in his latest State of the City address, noting that there were no hurricanes in 2007 and the city's top two industries are faring well. ..... In resurrecting the gay sex issue, he said that despite the Police Department's official statements last summer that public restrooms were not being used as a hookup site for men, they were. He said city parks were listed on the Internet as places to meet, and that 12 related arrests have been made in city parks since the controversybegan in the summer. He didn't specify what the arrests were for."As long as I'm mayor, I'm going to do all I can to make sure the activity doesn't take place," he said. "And hopefully whoever takes my place in 2009 will have the same opinion. I think the majority of the residents do support parks that are available to the children without having to see illegal activity."

Democrats turn out for delegate selection
Whether the delegates picked Saturday will be seated in Denver is still uncertain. When Florida moved up its primary earlier than Democratic rules allowed, the national party punished the state by revoking its convention delegates. Party leaders hope a delegation will get seated, but no final decision has been made.

Michael Mayo: Water management tricky in South Florida
Parker Priest was confused. A few weeks ago, rare, heavy February rains pelted the Everglades water conservation area where he regularly takes his airboat. But in a matter of days, he saw all that water vanish. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opened spillway gates along the North New River Canal in western Broward, causing the water level to abruptly drop nearly 2 feet.

Tough choices await state lawmakers
If lawmakers don't know it already, they will discover when they convene in
Tallahassee Tuesday for the 60-day legislative session that the party is
over. We're not talking about the lobbyist-fueled party circuit, but about
running one of the largest states in the union, which is in deep trouble.
