The Global AIDS Fight
Congress and the White House are preparing to ramp up spending on programs to combat AIDS and related diseases around the world while removing some of the ideological blinders that have long undermined the effort to slow the spread of the AIDS virus. It will be a welcome strengthening of a foreign aid program that was already one of the shining accomplishments of the Bush administration.

ASK AMY
DEAR AMY: A young cousin of mine recently reached out to me with some heavy news. She told me that she is gay. She asked me not to tell anyone in the family, and I am honored that she trusted me with such a secret. I will most definitely honor her secret, and I completely support her.
However, as a man who is certainly more an elder than a peer -- she just started driving; I am pushing 30 -- I am wondering what role I should play in this.

As the battle over a bill banning domestic partner registries continues in the Legislature, the Kansas Equality Coalition is urging people to contact their lawmakers. "Call your representative and senator now and tell them to vote 'no,'" said Thomas Witt, chair of the Equality Coalition. "This awfulbill would make it harder for some LGBT Kansans to get health insurance. It would damage the home rule authority of local cities and counties."
-
Four years ago, much of the Santa Cruz area gay and lesbian community brimmed with optimism as San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom began allowing same-sex marriages, prompting county and city leaders here to pass measures of support. That optimism has been tempered in the intervening years. The California Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments Tuesday on six consolidated suits related to same-gender marriage in which challengers contend state marriage laws are unconstitutional. But few same-sex marriage supporters are ready to party like it's 2004.
-
Arizona: Republicans in the Legislature have introduced a proposal to amend the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. Again? Yes, unfortunately. We think the amendment is unnecessary and unworthy of inclusion in our Constitution.
-
New York: There's a famous line from a speech Sojourner Truth delivered at a women's rights convention in 1851 that comes to mind as Monroe County fights against recognizing gay marriage. "Ain't I a woman?" said the former slave and early feminist, in response to concerns that women weren't strong enough, smart enough or Christ-like enough to merit equal rights. Those are among the arguments against allowing same-sex marriage. But County Executive Maggie Brooks says she's looking out for taxpayers in appealing a state court decision recognizing gay marriages performed outside of New York state.
-
Gay activists have donated thousands of dollars to Iowa politicians in an attempt to derail debate on a legislative proposal that would alter Iowa's Constitution and limit marriage to heterosexual couples, an Iowa group alleged Thursday. Several legislative leaders quickly denounced the group's claims, calling their tactics hateful."I have a problem when people say, 'We are good, they are evil,' House Majority Speaker Pat Murphy, a Dubuque Democrat, said in response to the group. "The bottom line is, I believe that every person should be treated with dignity and respect in this state."
-
Public debate about homosexuality is dominated by the question of choice."Clinics" that aim for "cures" presuppose that it is, while the Web sites of groups like the Human Rights Campaign and Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays prominently display arguments that sexuality is not a choice. Indeed, it seems that most people take the question to be the key to determining whether discrimination is permissible. Both sides are wrong, but my concern today is with those who defend gay rights on the grounds that sexuality is not a choice. Most importantly, focus on the alleged genetic basis of homosexuality gives the bulk of the game away to the anti-gay position. One turns to an "I can't help it" defense, only when one has agreed that something is inherently wrong - or at least morally problematic.

Turkey's Anti-War Diva
Better known for her tabloid love affairs, plastic surgery and husky voice, transsexual Turkish diva Bulent Ersoy makes the unlikeliest political activist. Yet she has caused a storm of outrage by becoming the only public personality to speak out against Turkey's invasion of northern Iraq. So pervasive is the nationalist climate that Ersoy has been vilified for declaring - on a national TV equivalent of American Idol, where she is a judge - that if she had a son, she would not have sent him to fight this war. She is now under investigation for being "anti-military".

Unmasking The "Gay" Agenda
Americans who self-identify as "gay" or lesbian comprise roughly one to three percent of the population. Yet the homosexual movement - led by extremist homosexual pressure groups like the so-called Human Rights Campaign (HRC) - represent, per capita, one of America's most powerful and well-funded political lobbies. Consider that HRC and the HRC foundation alone have an annual budget in excess of 50 million.

NC: homobigots launch attack against openly gay judge
The GOP in North Carolina is exceptionally homophobic, populated and run by bigots with fossilized thinking. It's not surprising, then, that the firs topenly gay judge on the NC Court of Appeals, John Arrowood, is facing an anti-gay attack by his opponent Bob Hunter's supporters. Arrowood was appointed by outgoing governor Mike Easley back in August of 2007, to fill an unexpired term, and is up for election this year. http://pamshouseblend.com/showDiary.do;jsessionid=7403C8A03D081C8EA2D9B25C078F79AA?diaryId=4629

Hate speech divides Moroccan press
In Morocco, articles published by the Arabic-language Al Massae daily have led to a strong division of the press. According to Said Essoulami, director of the Casablanca-based Centre for Media Freedom in the Middle East and North Africa, this controversy shows the difficulties of Moroccan media to cover sexual, cultural, political and ideological diversities.

Boy Scouts wrong on gay exclusions
I have chosen not to renew my membership in the National Eagle Scout Association because of the Boy Scouts' official policy of discrimination against gay people. I am ashamed an organization to which I owe so much has chosen to take such a myopic stance on this issue and hides behind a legal veil to exclude gay Scouts.
