Time to fix state's primary mess
When the Democratic National Committee declared last year that it wouldpunish Florida and Michigan for violating its primary election calendar byrefusing to seat delegates to the party convention, it failed to foreseetoday's state-by-state battle for votes. Now the 210 delegates from Floridaand the 156 from Michigan loom large. The two leading candidates aresquaring off for a credentials fight based on purely selfish interests. Theonly way out of this mess is to call in some grown-ups.

The F. Scott Fitzgerald of Gay Lit
Holleran's stark critique of '70s gay life remains a controversial classic
By Jesse Monteagudo
-
Andrew Holleran's career spans the history of post-Stonewall gay literature. His first novel, "Dancer from the Dance (1978)," a stark, tell-it-like-it-isstudy of gay life in New York and Fire Island, is perhaps the most importantgay novel of the 1970s. In its day, "Dancer from the Dance" was compared to"Faggots," Larry Kramer's scathing attack on the gay scene. But Holleran hasmixed feelings about the comparisons.
"Yes and no," he says. "Yes, in the sense that they were both about the NewYork gay community, a new subject at the time, and came out almostsimultaneously. No, because they were so different. Larry's book was blackcomedy, inspired in part by Evelyn Waugh; mine was more romantic, and wasrejected by one publisher for being too much like 'The Great Gatsby.'"
