Arts organizations are becoming aggressive in getting candidates to talkabout funding.
When it comes to campaign themes, the arts can't compete with healthcarereform, national security, the sluggish economy -- just about anything youmight name. But this presidential primary season, people who work at thecrossroads of politics and culture say the arts have attained a higherprofile than usual -- and the push for an arts agenda has established afoothold in the campaign landscape. Linda Frye Burnham, well known in LosAngeles arts circles for starting High Performance magazine and co-foundingHighways Performance Space in Santa Monica, began hearing in January aboutBarack Obama's support for the arts.Along with thousands of other artsfigures, she received an e-mail detailing how Obama would increase supportfor the National Endowment for the Arts, embrace arts education, strengthencultural diplomacy, advocate an artist-friendly tax law and propose anArtist Corps to send young artists to teach in low-income areas.

A nation of laws, even at Guantánamo
The Pentagon would make a big mistake by failing to allow terrorist suspectsa vigorous defense in its war court at Guantánamo Bay. Most of the world, including many Americans, already believes that there can be no justice forGuantánamo captives. Unless accused terrorists have legal protections, anyconviction will be suspect, and rightfully so. The outrage in adeath-penalty case would be even worse.
