Barack Obama: "We the people, in order to form a more perfect union."
Barack Obama
Video of Tuesday's speech is at link, below.
Two hundred and twenty one years ago, in a hall that still stands across thestreet, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launchedAmerica's improbable experiment in democracy. Farmers and scholars; statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyrannyand persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at aPhiladelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787. Thedocument they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. Itwas stained by this nation's original sin of slavery, a question thatdivided the colonies and brought the convention to a stalemate until thefounders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least twenty moreyears, and to leave any final resolution to future generations.

More Bill Clinton revisionism
The Clinton campaign is having one heckuva time keeping "the big dog" on theporch, and almost every time Bill Clinton barks, it's his wife's candidacythat ends up getting bitten. Thus far he hasn't been as divisive on gayissues that he has been on race -- probably because conventional wisdom saysHillary is doing better among gays -- but he has repeatedly rewritten hisown political history.

Clinton, Obama, Iraq: by Andrew Sullivan and Joe Klein
So we now have a pattern. Obama's chief economic advisor (Austan Goolsbee)and a prominent foreign policy advisor (Power) have now told the truth ontwo important issues, trade and Iraq respectively. Their truth contradictedsome of the overheated rhetoric their boss was using on the campaign trail.
Hillary Clinton--whose actual positions on trade and Iraq are probably thesame as Obama's advisors--has attacked Obama in both cases for saying onething and believing another...when she is doing the exact same thing.
