-Oakland Park seeks humane solution to feral cat problem
The city has stopped removing wild cats from city property as it seeks another solution to its feline problem - preferably a humane one. Nine feral cats were euthanized in February after they were trapped at the city's Public Works Operations building, 5100 NE 12th Terrace, according to Lisa Mendheim, spokeswoman for Broward County's Animal Care and Regulation Division. Now, city commissioners want to ensure the remaining cats are kept alive. "I do not want the cats or kittens killed," Commissioner Suzanne Boisvenue said. The city earlier this year had arranged for animal control workers to pick up the trapped cats. The trappings were halted in August, after a City Hall employee sent an e-mail urging commissioners to save the cats. The employee wrote the cats had been crying because they weren't being fed at Public Works, a utility site in an industrial area with plenty of machinery and Dumpsters. Workers had been ordered to stop feeding the cats in hopes they would move to another food source.
