-Was a Would-Be Saint Gay?
The long-running battle between gay rights activists and the Vatican hasmoved into the realm of the dead. With 19th century Anglican convertCardinal John Henry Newman, arguably the greatest Catholic thinker from theEnglish-speaking world, moving ever closer to sainthood, trouble is brewingover where his final resting place should be. The London-born historian andtheologian died in 1890 and, following the instructions in his will, wasburied beside his lifelong friend and fellow convert Ambrose St. John, whohad died 15 years earlier. Newman's deep expressions of grief after St.John's death, along with other writings, have led some historians to askwhether the two men, who lived together for many years, lived much likecommon-law spouses. newman, whose ideas on conscience and faith haveinfluenced Christian theology ever since, is expected to be beatified nextyear following the Vatican's recent certification of a Newman miracle - whena Boston man's cure from a crippling spinal disease could not be explainedmedically. The final step of canonization - full Sainthood - will requireproof of an additional miracle achieved through the intercession of Newman'sspirit.

-Ambrose St John, the Cardinal and Catholic grave robbers
The famous Catholic Cardinal, John Henry Newman, who died in 1890 was a manof deep passion and conviction. The celebrated theologian and historian isviewed by many Catholics as one the greatest thinkers from theEnglish-speaking world. Despite the hidebound traditions of his day, Newmanmaintained a relationship of great intimacy with an Anglican clergyman,Father Ambrose St John. The relationship was so close, it has been likenedto the relationship between "husband and wife." When Ambrose St John diedin 1875, Newman was deeply stricken. He said: "I have ever thought nobereavement was equal to that of a husband's or a wife's, but I feel itdifficult to believe that any can be greater, or any one's sorrow greater, than mine."

-Fed up with straight talking
As far as most women's mags are concerned, lesbians don't exist. So shouldgay readers stick to specialist titles or is there room for middle ground?
by Claudia Cahalane, The Guardian, How to please your man. Bag the guy ofyour dreams. Britain's most eligible bachelors. Sex tips he'll love. Thewomen's glossies often seem to have but one thing on their minds: sex. Andlots of it. But not, perhaps, if you're a lesbian. There's the oddtitillating feature about getting off with your best mate, but as far asmost mainstream glossies are concerned, gay women only exist as asubculture. Images and words virtually always assume heterosexuality, andthere is little recognition that a portion of the readership (at least 6% ofthe female population) will not be straight. So what does a gay woman readon the bus?
