-Officials overwhelmed by new voter registrations
Floridians are registering to vote in record numbers. Surprise. Surprise. It's not like state officials weren't expecting this. They should've known since the presidential primaries that the U.S. public is engaged in this election like never before in recent history. And that because of its historical significance, voters would flock to the polls in unprecedented numbers. Yet, the State Division of Elections seems caught off guard by the tens of thousands of voter registration applications pouring in on a weekly basis. Already the state has a backlog of 32,000 voter files, according to a recent Sun Sentinel news report. Last week, 25,000 registrations arrived. The state has 25 extra staffers working on the applications on 12-to-16 hour shifts. But Divisions of Elections Director Don Palmer informed the state's 67 county elections supervisors last week that he needs additional help to process the applications by the Oct. 6 registration deadline.

-Broward County political leaders worry about voting problems if turnout is huge
Some obstacles could make for a long wait on Election Day
Anthony Man
The first big election using paper ballots in Broward County plus an expected record-shattering turnout has political leaders warning about the possibility of an Election Day meltdown. "I'm very concerned," said Broward Democratic Chairman Mitch Ceasar, who doesn't want Florida to reprise its role as "the laughingstock of the nation." Sharon Day, of Fort Lauderdale, who travels the state in her role as Florida's Republican national committeewoman, said, "All of us have a lot of concern."

-Subtropical Storm Laura forms in Atlantic
The National Hurricane Center says Subtropical Storm Laura has formed in the north central Atlantic Ocean. The storm is centered about 1,015 miles west of Faial island in the Azores and moving west-northwest near 8 mph early Monday. [...] But the hurricane center says Laura is not expected to affect any land areas and will only be a threat to shipping interests in the far north Atlantic.

-Deal could ease woes of S. Florida economy
The bailout won't fix South Florida's economic problems immediately, but those problems would have become much worse without one, South Florida business people said Sunday. A lack of credit had spread from homes into cars, businesses and even credit cards.

-Democratic losers back separate picks for Broward sheriff
Two Democrats who lost to Scott Israel in the Broward sheriff's primary have split their allegiances -- each backing a different candidate in November's high-profile race. Richard Lemack, who came in a close second in the five-way Democratic primary, has endorsed Israel.
