-Op-Ed Columnist: Palin's Alternate Universe
Sarah Palin is the perfect exclamation point to the Bush years. We've lived through nearly two terms of an administration that believed it could create its own reality: "Deficits don't matter." "Brownie, you're doing a heckuva job." "Those weapons of mass destruction must be somewhere."

-Op-Ed Columnist: Talking in Points
The Republicans were euphoric over Sarah Palin's debate performance, particularly the part in which she stood tall and refrained from falling off the stage. "There are conservatives and Republicans across America who are ... breathing a sigh of relief," said Pat Buchanan on MSNBC, adding that "of the four debaters we've seen, she was the most interesting, attractive of them all."

-Op-Ed Columnist: The Joe Biden Show
I expected Sarah Palin to perform well in Thursday's debate, so I wanted to watch it with the most conservative crowd I could find. (In truth, after her horrendous performance with Katie Couric, anything short of her head spinning around and spewing vomit would have been considered an improvement.)

The downside of appealing to Joe Six-Pack. She killed. She had him at "Nice to meet you. Hey, can I call you Joe?" She was the star. He was the second male lead, the good-natured best friend of the leading man. She was not petrified but peppy.

-Tracking Laptop Thieves Safely
New software tracks a stolen laptop without tracking its owner.
Nowadays a lost or stolen laptop can often be recovered thanks to software that automatically transmits the location of the device back to a central server. However, some experts worry that, without additional security measures, this kind of tracking technology could inadvertently make users more vulnerable to spying. "If you lose your laptop, a commercial service can tell you where it is right now," says Tadayoshi Kohno, an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Washington, in Seattle.
"The issue, from a privacy perspective, is that this also means that someone who might break into or have access to the commercial service's database might be able to track you even before the laptop leaves your possession."
