The ACLU plans to ask a judge to reinstate an order that Okeechobee HighSchool allow a gay-straight alliance on campus because the club has regainedmembers.
According to court documents filed Tuesday by the American Civil LibertiesUnion, two students want to revive the club, which was dismissed this monthas a plaintiff in a lawsuit against the Okeechobee County School Boardbecause the club apparently had no members and had not met since the fall.
The club's founder, Yasmin Gonzalez, has graduated; subsequent clubpresidents have left the school. However, Okeechobee High School juniorBrittany Martin told a teacher last week she and another student want torevive the club and host a meeting next month.

People on the right have a troubling tendency to cherry-pick the types ofbigotry they choose to denounce. We saw this recently when Sen. John McCainissued a carefully worded, "categorical" repudiation of Rev. John Hagee'santi-Catholic remarks. McCain, who had earlier embraced Hagee's endorsementof his candidacy and publicly praised the right-wing preacher, was carefulnot to mention anything about Hagee's anti-gay statements or his anti-Muslimstatements in his belated repudiation.
