A gay teen is taunted at his junior high school. He pushes back by'flirting.' Next, gunfire.
For teens living in a shelter for abused and neglected children, school canprovide a daily dose of normalcy, place to fit in, a chance to be justanother kid. It didn't turn out that way for Lawrence King. According tothe few students who befriended him, Larry, 15 years old and openly gay, found no refuge from his tormentors at E.O. Green Junior High School. Not inthe classroom, the quad, the cafeteria. Not from the day he enrolled at theOxnard school until the moment he was shot to death in a computer lab, justafter Larry's usual morning van ride from the shelter a town away. The14-year-old accused of killing him, Brandon McInerney, had his own troubledhome life when he was younger, with his parents accusing each other of drugaddiction and physical assaults, court records show. The year before Brandonwas born, his father allegedly shot the boy's mother in the arm, shatteringher elbow, the records say.

The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund has gotten a hold of this speech given byan Oklahoma State Legislator, who thought only 50 people were listening whenshe went on this disgustingly anti-gay tirade.
Some money quotes:
"No society that has totally embraced homosexuality has last more than, youknow, a few decades." and"I think it's the biggest threat that our nation has, even moreso thanterrorism or Islam, which I think is a big threat."
The Victory Fund has launched a campaign called "Are You Listening?" whichwill let lawmakers like this know that yes, we hear their anti-gay tirades, even when they think they're speaking to only 50 or so people.
You can let the Victory Fund know that you heard the speech by filling outthe form here. http://www.victoryfund.org/files/listening.htmlUPDATE: I have since found out from a tip that the legislator is Sally Kern.
http://www.okhouse.gov/Committees/Member.aspx?MemberID=87 Maybe send her anemail and let her know that you heard what she said.

SCOTT HALL - President and founder Gay American Heroes
By PHIL LaPADULA
Express: What motivated you to launch the Gay American Heroes project?
Scott Hall: The horrific murder of Ryan Keith Skipper [last March] andknowing that Ryan's story would soon be forgotten - like so many others.
What is the primary goal of Gay American Heroes?
http://www.gayamericanheroes.net/
To build a national traveling memorial that honors all LGBT persons who havebeen murdered because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Toshare, educate and inspire people to be the best human beings they can be.
Anti-gay incidents are apparently on the rise both in Florida andnationwide. What factors do you think are causing this increase?
Anti-gay incidents are on the rise due to many factors. One of the mainfactors is the increase in anti-gay rhetoric and legislation in our country.
When political, religious and community leaders demonize the LGBT community, they create an atmosphere of hate and intolerance that can lead to violentacts. Violent words often turn into violent acts.
